I can't help but think Royal will be the number 2 WR at the start of the season. Anyone disagree? I don't know what went around during the draft, but my bias opinion had him being number 2. He really looks like he can handle it.

Dude he is a beast and has earned it. Shanny said he has grasped the playbook better than most. I hope to God he is the number 2.

Gotta admit, I'm on the Royal Bandwagon now.
Dude can play, that leaping catch in front of Henry and a safety? Fricken sweet.
I'm excited with Marshall, Royal, Jackson, Stokley as our main 4 WR's.

Royal looks good. We all know what Brandon brings to the table. I think we are fine at WR this season with Stokely and DJack behind them but I would highly recommend going after another WR next year with a fairly high draft pick. We are one more gamebreaker on offense from really taking Jay to the next level.

Green Bay has done a great job putting targets around Favre before he left. We should follow suit.

Rookie WR Josh Morgan continuing to catch on

Posted by Dan Brown (http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/author/dbrown/) on August 4th, 2008 at 3:47 pm | Categorized as Uncategorized (http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/category/uncategorized/)
Is it too early to proclaim a camp sensation?
Josh Morgan continues to raise eyebrows during 49ers camp, looking far better than his sixth-round draft status would suggest.
The rookie receiver did it again Monday in Napa, and this time there was extra reason to underline his performance with a highlight pen:
1. Morgan did it against the Raiders in a semi-competitive practice
2. Morgan did it while working with the starting unit.
Isaac Bruce had a scheduled day of rest and Bryant Johnson suffered a hamstring injury.
That opened the door for the rookie — and he ran right through it. Morgan’s day caught the attention of no less an authority than Mike Martz.
Asked if any players stood out, Martz didn’t hesitate.
“Josh,’’ the offensive coordinator replied.

Morgan has drawn Martz’s ire at times early in camp. But the kid is clearly getting the hang of it. During 7-on-7 drills against the Raiders on Monday, he torched defensive back Darrick Brown and hauled in a long pass from J.T. O’Sullivan.
How good was his route running on the play? Receivers coach Jerry Sullivan, known for being impossible to please, walked over and shook Morgan’s hand on the spot.
“We’ve been very happy with Josh all year,’’ Martz said. “Josh really today did some nice things. He still makes mistakes and does some things you don’t like, but he’s made really good progress.”
Morgan is physical, at 6-foot, 219 pounds. But he has good speed and a fluid stride. He led an offensively-challenged Virginia Tech team last year with 46 catches for 552 yards (12.0 average) and five touchdowns.
“He’s come remarkably far from where he was when he came here. … We put him in that first group now and he did a nice job.”

I still think Royal looks bigger than he is. He certainly plays bigger.

Imagine having a game-breaker on this team again. Marshall is a big-play guy, too... but more of a physical, grinder-type. Royal looks like he can take a routine 5 yard slant to the house if teams aren't careful.

So it looks like DeAngleo Hall and Royal might eb lining up across from each other on MNF. I wonder if they'll pick up that they both wore number 4 (back-to-back, Hall then Royal) and were great return men at the same school.

Still, I'm not willing to put Cutler's 3rd WR spot in the hands of Martinez, no matter how many bullet passes Cutler can throw to him.

i admit i didn't know much at all about Royal when we drafted him. i thought cool we got a small receiver with a lot of speed to use on returns, anything he contributes in the passing game is gravy.
but now i am thinking he could be a dangerous valuable weapon for the offense, and we are going to have to find another guy to return kicks if he is going to be a starter.
I am just thinking of the offense when Marshall is back from suspension, with Royol at number 2, and Stokely in the slot, with Darrell Jackson as number 4, and Scheff added to the mix. there aren't going to be enough opportunities for all these guys.

Anytime a guy like Jackson is number 4 on your depth chart, you're not doing that bad on offense.

Eddie will begin the season as the Flanker while D-Jack will start at Split End for the first two games without BMarsh. If Royal plays well enough, he'll remain at Flanker with BMarsh taking his Split End spot in Week 3 with D-Jack then becoming the #4 WR. If Royal struggles, D-Jack will move to the Flanker spot and start alongside BMarsh. Obviously if Royal keeps playing the way he is now, there's no reason he won't keep that job all season.

I don't think Shanny is willing to put Martinez into #3, either, when he deems
Stokley as the "best slot receiver in football."

But Fast Eddie looks as if he belongs at #2, that's for sure.

some called him rod smith like way back in Apr.

http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?t=68032

what no one is talking about is this kids blocking ability, he is going to be Rod Smith like w/ his blocking and work ethic... I live very close to Blacksburg and I have seen this kid play A LOT.. and I hate VA Tech so I'm not homering this... I feel we will not regret this pick at all.... the kid is strong, fast, has a great attitude, can block and will block.. we drafted for two positions w/ this pick WR/KR/PR and this kid will help our running game downfield w/ his blocking as well as a great slot guy in the passing game.. We didn't have a 3rd rounder and this guy was projected as a late 2nd or early 3rd pick... ask redskins fans if they would have rather had Devin Thomas or Eddie Royal.... the answer might suprise you

it is pretty funny to go back and look at this boards posters at and after the draft... a lot on this board were pissed about the Royal pick and it's funny to look at the posts now you can really tell who really knows about football and talent and who doesn't.. makes it easier to spot who just regurgitates what they hear or read in the papers

I thought Royal made Jay look good on the long pass...excellent timing on the leap with the corner right there and the safety bearing down and he almost got away from both of them.

I thought Jay played really good last night and I was surprised at how well the o-line protected him.

Considering how Denver has consistently drafted like crap for years, particuliarly at wr and the secondary, faithfull had every reason to be skepical of "reaches" that seen contrary to consensus.

In fact, you could easily argue the Shanahan has been doing it with smoke and mirrors since 99.

I had "This draft rules" under my avatar for over a year right after 06, because THAT draft finally made sense, despite the fact we got to the AFCCG.

This class is promising, particuliarly Clady, but WR's are so hard to guess...look at Cholston...besides...Cutler is getting so good now, he is starting to skewer reciever stats, just like how we used to be able to trot out RB's.

We saw a little of royals physical/talented side on that big catch not only did he fake the defender out of his shoes to get that wide open but after the catch he blasted the guy in front of him going out of bounds.

im sory but i dissaggree. We have our clear cut #1 BM. Royal is our down the field burner. who also can take the short one and work in space with it. he is #2. #3 BS and DJ are gonna be fifghting for balls that the TE does not get. at this point i think we need to spend our picks else where. at this point i think we need a running back fairly high. i like torain. but i just have this fear that he will always be injured. i hear he runs high which means short time in the NFL

I think BPC is spot on. Marshall and Royal. Jackson's essentially a one-year guy; but could get extended. Colbert hasn't been impressive, Glenn Martinez doesn't even look like a human and Stokley (despite being great in the slot) hasn't been as healthy we'd like.

Favre having options in Driver, Jennings and Jones really pumped up his game.

Despite looking good so far, you just never know what can happen in the real season. Injuries, suspensions, etc. are all part of the game.

I have no problem with the Broncos using a third or fourth round pick on another receiver next year. I'd say we have bigger needs, but I understand and whole-heartedly agree with BPC wanting to surround a superior talent in Cutler with reasonable weapons to assume his full potential.

Marshall and Royal should be great receivers. Scheffler at tight end helps, and if he's healthy I think he'll do a lot of damage. It'd be nice to have another GOOD option for the future in our offense. The Packers and Patriots proved that **** last year.

We should have gone 3-fer on Hokie recievers, who leads the preseason in receiving yards? David Clowney, drafted from Virginia Tech, he has 222 yards and 2 TD for 2 games.

So far VT rookies are numbers 1, 2 and 16 for the preseason in yards through the air, pretty special.

Royal is going to be very good, he has speed, very good hands, he looks smart, he runs routes well and he looks like he knows what is going on, if he becomes a run blocker as well we have ourselves a very very good pair.

Broncoman13
08-17-2008, 11:47 AM
The people that keep saying that Eddie Royal is our deep threat and that he's just gonna run the deep stuff are cracking me up. This kid is so much more than just a speedster. He catches the ball in traffic as well as anyone on the team. The jump ball down field is a perfect example of a receiver that will go up and compete for the ball. I'm guessing that play alone will give Cutler a lot of confidence in Eddie! I'd also like to point out that for a "little guy" he sure plays big! Going up strong for the jump ball, the blocks vs the Texans, the lowering the hammer instead of going o/b... yeah, he may only be 5'9 185#, but he plays like he's 6'1 and 200#!

I'm telling you, if they would've had a #19 authentic last night at the team store, I'd have been out $300! I know you can have one made as well. I'm still somewhat torn between getting a #88, a #15, or a #19. Royal is really making it hard for me!

Anybody hear BMarsh after the game. Glowing comments for Eddie Royal. He said Royal is opening up things for him and that opponents are really having to respect both of them equally. He said until he "arrives" he expects Royal to have as much attention as he does. He also said that his TD catch was designed to go to Royal. Jay saw the coverage double underneath so he went through his progessions. Brandon runs that route quite well and it's very difficult for any CB in the league to defend that b/c of his size. Remember the OM interview and the question regarding the Redzone play calling and Royal getting involved? That was the exact play he scored on in the 11 on 11s. The Cowboys obviously watched some film and were ready for it, but then Jay was good enough to find the next receiver in his progression, which happens to be a pretty damn good redzone threat in his own right!!!

I know, I feel your pain. But there are still run stuffing DT's left on the board. I didn't like the pick at all until I read up on the guy a little. He'll at least replace Stokely long term, but be able to block better and return kicks. He's potentially the #2 WR to play alongside Marshall at a very high level.

Not bad.

From what I hear, Royal wasn't a reach, he was rated in the 2nd round by all the draft services I use and pretty much every team was high on him compared to a lot of the players ranked higher. He did impress at the senior bowl with his good hands and being able to beat the jam consistently.

He was also the second ranked returner after Leodis Mckelvin, so all in all I feel he was a good value.

Starting with the 2005 draft, we have really done well. If it wasn't for Darrent Williams being murdered, we would have had 3 good CB's out of that draft as well as Chris Myers. 06 is obviously unparalleled, as many as 5 starters and several with pro bowl potential. 07 right now is beginning to look decent with 2 starters in 4 picks and I am very excited about 08 with Clady having no limits to his potential, Royal looking more than good and Torain doing well, coupled with a lot of potential in guys like JMFW, Barrett and Powell.
