Short and Simple!
I have a horrible TV and now looking into an HDTV (1080p). I was looking any where from 40-46 inches, most likely the low end, since i live in a dorm room.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've seen a few I like, however they are outrageous in price.

I have a 37" Sharp Aquos. I bought it last year and its only 1080i. I couldn't be happier with the picture though. My brother bought a bigger one from Walmart and I can see a huge difference in quality.

I have a 46" Samsung and love it! They are a bit more pricey then some of the other models/makes thou.
If its was me putting one in a dormroom I'd just go with something cheap like a vizio from wal-mart.

1080p is a bad idea for a dorm room. Period.
Having said that, for $200 more than the same sized Vizio, you can get this Samsung, which is rated very highly.....ridiculously good sale price for what you get IMO ($1099).

We got a Sharp Aquos LC-46D82U
its a 1080p 46". We got it from a store that was closing it's doors so we got it new, with extended warrenty for $999.00
Keep in mind when you purchase an LCD what the recomended screen size is for your viewing area....how many max feet away you are for your screen size. Here's a good chart that was recommended to us:
Screen size.........Viewing distance range
30"....................3.75-6.25 feet
34"....................4.25-7 feet
42"....................5.25-8.75 feet
50"....................6.25-10.5 feet
56"....................7-11.75 feet
62"....................7.75-13 feet
70"....................8.75-14.75 feet

Something's fishy there. Best Buy is selling that tv for $2,599 not counting the warranty and Circuit City has it on ridiculous clearance right now for $1,599 before warranty. It has to be either stolen out of the back of a truck or a refurb that they lied about to get it down to that price.

My current dorm room is probably 16x11. It's no small box, that's for sure.

I was thinking of something along the lines of this bad boy. Click Here (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665116632)
It's expensive, but looks sharp.

If $'s not an issue I recommend either the sony of samsung products. Also 40" is not big enough IMHO

That's a great set. If you're serious about it, Circuit City has it on clearance right now for $1999.
If that price is still a little high, they also have a really nice 46 inch 1080P set that is getting great reviews for $1699.

Yes, I have my PS3 for Blu-Ray, sort of one of the reasons i bought it.
I'll have to read up on that. I don't think i'll go that big though.

What size TV did you have before? The reason I ask is because an old 36" crt is bigger then a 36" flat screen.

Is that just what you told your wife to justify going that big??

It's like 24" CRT.
Too be honest, I wasn't much into TV, unless it was to play Wii. I finally got sick of watching movies on my Computer (22" monitor)
I am going to Japan in Mid-September and that's when I plan on purchasing a new TV. Right now i'm trying to scope some things out, reviews, advice, etc..
edit:
This brings up another issue, are TV's usually dual power? I believe I was told aafes usually sells "dual power" TV's, but if i bought from an outside store now, would it work (probably not)?

When I was a kid living in Germany we had to have transformers all over the house, but that was back in 92, so that could be different now.

Sweet, I actually talked to someone who was there for a few year (and was raised there) and they said the power is the same as it is in United States.
I plan on going out soon and look at a few TV's.

Nope...nothing fishy. It was a reputable company that was closing the location in my town. It was cheaper to sell at huge discount than ship everything to another store. We basically got it for cost.
