Hi, all!
I just recently found some photos on my hard drive from a hike to Opal Creek, in the mountains around Salem, OR. Opal Creek is about 35 miles northwest of Salem, in deep forest territory. At one time there were extensive mining operations in these hills for copper, lead and other metals. There's still extensive evidence of the mining operations -- shafts, shacks, trailheads, and mining equipment abandoned to rust in the woods -- but all the mines are shut down now. It was a one-day trip thru the old growth forest, hiking about 8 miles on a loop to Opal Creek itself and back. I thought you guys might enjoy seeing these pictures. It's truly beautiful up there.
