Negotiations dead; Favre to compete for starting job
By Tom Silverstein
Sunday, Aug 3 2008, 03:09 PM
Green Bay -- The Green Bay Packers are through negotiating with quarterback Brett Favre on a marketing deal and they are anticipating him reporting for training camp Monday and being on the field as soon as he passes his physical, a Packers source said.

Another source close to the club, said that the Packers have agreed to allow Favre to compete with Aaron Rodgers for the starting job and he won't necessarily be the backup this season. Trade talks with Favre have not advanced and coach Mike McCarthy is expected to come up with a plan that will split the practice repetitions with Rodgers.

The Packers released this statement from president Mark Murphy:

"Sixteen years after Brett Favre came to the Packers, he is returning for a seventeenth season. He has had a great career with our organization and although we built this year around the assumption that Brett meant what he said about retiring, Brett is coming back. We will welcome him back and turn this situation to our advantage.

"Frankly, Brett's change of mind put us in a very difficult spot. We now will revise many actions and assumptions about our long-term future, all predicated on Brett's decision last March to retire. As a result of his decision, we invested considerably in a new and different future without Brett and we were obviously moving in that direction. That's why this wasn't easy. Having crossed the Rubicon once when Brett decided to retire, it's very difficult to reorient our plans and cross it again in the opposite direction - but we'll put this to our advantage.

"Brett will be in camp tomorrow. Although there has been uncertainty regarding Brett's return, Ted Thompson and Coach McCarthy had previously discussed this and have had a plan in place. Coach McCarthy will talk to the team and the quarterbacks about the plan moving forward, and after he has done that we will share it publicly.

"No matter what, I look forward to another successful season for the Packers and our fans. This has been a tough situation, but the Packers will make the most of it."

McCarthy is expected to address the quaerterback situation after the scrimmage tonight.

I don't see anything different here from the Packers except the part about letting the jerk compete for the starting job (probably no more than lip service).

$17 million of his contract were incentives based on him becoming the starter .... oooops ... he can still earn 2.2m of those incentives if he starts this year.

Brett Favre should expect to be visited by Rodgers one of these days.......probably at night, while he's sleeping.

Talk about a death sentence for your career. Rodgers will be an old man by the time he get's to start. Unless pack plan on cutting Favre right before opening day so his salary isn't locked in.

Why wasn't this the answer to Favre's return from day 1!!!!!!!

Media: Hey we heard Brett is thinking of another season, any comment?

Packer's FO: We'd be more than happy to welcome Brett back, but we'll have an open competition for the starting spot.

Media:So Brett wouldn't be guaranteed the starting job?

Packer's FO: Nothing's guaranteed in the NFL.

Lets wait and see if Favre is on that team on opening day. Either Favre starts or he's cut, I still expect the latter. Maybe there'll be a story of Favre not being in great shape thrown in as well. The Pack are just tired of going against the grain this whole time. Tell the fans he's competing, let Rogers know that it's his, cut Favre before the season and go about their business.

BroncoBuff

The answer is easy: Favre agrees to stay away, and to not meet with Vikings people, and the Packers waive him outright in Week 2 ... AFTER the opener against the hornheads (and I only call them that cause mock started this thread) in Lambeau.

Easy compromise :thanku:

Buff... you never seem to update your position even though I mention it every time you do... if he's on the roster on opening day, his salary is guaranteed! They don't want to give away 12 million... that's why many mention the end of training camp.

I'm curious who actually made trade offers to the Pack.No one I'm aware of. I think the Packers have made a few. The Packers will probably unload this jerk around the first week of Sept. if no one wants to give up a late choice by then.

-------------------------------------------------------------
6. The Packers could hold Favre until the eve of Week 1 (http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=441608)

The most likely option at this point is that the Packers will welcome Favre back, make him the fourth-string quarterback, minimize his reps in team drills (a season-ending injury would force the team to pay him $12 million) and then cut him as late as they can before his $12 million salary becomes guaranteed.

By cutting him as late as Friday, Sept. 5, Favre's $12 million salary for 2008 would evaporate and he'd have to negotiate a new deal with a new team and try to get up to speed on their playbook as soon as possible. As a practical matter, it would make it difficult -- if not impossible -- for Favre to play for the Vikings in Week 1 at Lambeau. By the time the Packers and Vikings get back together on Nov. 9 in Minnesota, however, Favre would be ready to take a piece out of the Packers.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Brett Favre is back.
Having arrived in Green Bay on Sunday night, Favre will be reinstated and added to the Packers' active roster on Monday, and will compete with Aaron Rodgers for the starting quarterback job.

A person close to the situation confirmed the open competition to the Press-Gazette Sunday afternoon.

A private plane carrying Favre, wife Deanna and agent James "Bus" Cook landed in Green Bay shortly after 8 p.m. ET Sunday night. Favre exited the plane and waved to a crowd of several hundred fans gathered at the airport — in a severe lightning storm, no less — before driving off in an SUV.

Murphy's statement, issued shortly before 4 p.m. ET, came after the NFL announced Favre's reinstatement late this morning. Commissioner Roger Goodell had held off on granting Favre's request for reinstatement for almost a week, hoping Favre and the Packers could resolve their standoff.

By reinstating Favre, Goodell is following through on a recent promise to force action. A trade from the Packers remains a possibility.

The reinstatement officially takes effect at 1 p.m. ET on Monday. Favre will have to pass a physical exam and a conditioning test before the Packers officially activate him. He still could be limited to individual drills even then.

Murphy said general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy "have had a plan in place" for Favre's return to the Packers. He said McCarthy "will talk to the team and the quarterbacks about the plan moving forward, and after he has done that we will share it publicly."

McCarthy is scheduled to discuss the plan for his quarterbacks in a press conference at 9:15 p.m. ET Monday.

Favre's arrival in training camp could cause a major disruption to the team, although he likely would not begin practicing with the Packers right away.

The Packers have an intrasquad scrimmage at Lambeau Field Sunday night, then do not have another scheduled public practice until 3 p.m. ET Tuesday. Favre could be on the field as early as Tuesday.

"I don't know how this will be resolved yet. I do know if I am going to play this year, I need to get in camp. I would love to play again," Favre told Al Jones of the SunHerald of Gulfport, Miss. "Everyone says, 'Brett, go play.' My question is, where?"'

Favre also told Jones: "My intentions have always been to play for Green Bay. Why wouldn't I want to play in Green Bay? They have as good a chance to win the Super Bowl as anyone."

Cook affirmed that, telling the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American: "He's ready to go. "He's ready to go in there and be a part of that team."

Favre retired in early March but has been having second thoughts. Team officials have insisted they are moving on with Aaron Rodgers, though, causing tensions to rise between Favre and the team.

It is not clear whether Favre's reinstatement indicates that he has rejected a long-term, multimillion-dollar marketing agreement offered by the team.

"When I retire, they lose all marketing rights," Favre told the SunHerald about the proposed marketing agreement with the Packers. "They cannot sell anything with my name on it. That's a big deal to them. It's just like an endorsement with Nike. We have been working on that (deal) for some time."

Reinstatement could force the Packers to increase their offer to Favre in hopes that he remains retired and avoids turning their training camp into a media circus this week.

Team officials publicly have ruled out releasing Favre, fearing he would immediately sign with division rival Minnesota.

Goodell told the NFL Network on Saturday that he thinks the situation has lingered long enough.

"I think we have to force it," Goodell said. "I think it's come to the point where there need to be some decisions made on behalf of the Packers, on behalf of Brett, on behalf of all the fans."

The Packers have been reluctant to give Favre his release for fear he would sign with the rival Minnesota Vikings. Thompson said the team would not consider trading Favre to an NFC North rival, which includes the Vikings, Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions.

or maybe he wants his players to have confidence in the front office, knowing that one single player, regardless of who it is, is not going to decide what happens in the franchise? favre may make the packers better this year ( i said may because hes played like **** more years then he hasnt) but if you dont start rodgers you are gonna lose him for good and have to hope that brohm turns into something.

I guess. But then the math is...

Start a guy who the fan-base loves and played very well last year... or risk losing a completely unknown commodity. For a team that should make the playoffs, it seems sort of a no-brainer.

I also assume they could extend Rogers contract if they wanted to. It's not like he can go anywhere else and demand a big salary.

They INVESTED a first round pick in Rodgers. They also invested two draft picks this year to compete for the back-up role because with Brett gone they had no depth at the position.

Don't you think they would have liked to use those picks differently if they knew that at the least they had Brett Favre as a backup? Have you been walking around without your helmet again? Try to keep up.

Or does it? That's pretty good change just for playing in a few preseason games and holding a clipboard the rest of the time.

If I was him, at the end of '09, I'd get the hell out of GB regardless. Rodgers could kinda be like the Marcus Allen of QB's, rot for years on the bench somewhere and then go someplace that'll actually let him play and have a good, long, productive career in spite of the lost years.

The best thing that could happen (IMO) is that Rodgers wins the job, plays great for the remainder of his contract and then at the last minute, flat out refuse to resign with the Packers.

Would be pretty fitting for the Packers organization if you ask me.
