This has been rumored for quite a while now, and today the rumors became true: Stan Kroenke has basically taken control of a local radio station’s sports programming, and has moved the Avalanche (and, oh yeah, the Nuggets) to that spot on the radio dial.
And that spot is: AM 1510, which any loyal listeners of that station (and I’m talking to YOU, you 15 or so people) know as “Mile High Sports Radio.”

For the first time since the Avs have been in Denver, they won’t be heard on “The Fan” anymore, which used to be AM 950, but now is FM 104.3.

First off, let’s hope Kroenke will be spending more money on 1510’s signal, because, at the present, it is very difficult to hear at night. And since about 98 percent of Avs and Nugs games will be played at night this coming season, well, my guess is Stan will spend a few of those Wal-Mart bucks on a better signal tower.

Make no mistake, this is HUGE news in the Denver radio community. The Fan now has zero local teams by which they broadcast games, including college teams. How this will affect the longtime Denver sports radio leader remains to be seen, but my sources say Kroenke’s foray into owning a radio station is just another avenue of capturing more of the local sports dollar, of which he currently owns a big chunk.

Previously, The Fan paid for the right to broadcast the Avs and Nugs, but Kroenke is now, in essence, paying himself to put them on the air.

Kroenke Sports says the “talent” for the Avs and Nugs (the broadcasters themselves) remains up in the air. I haven’t been told otherwise that Norm Jones and Mark Moser will continue to do the games, but there appears to be at least a little bit of uncertainty in this area.

Personally, I thought The Fan did a good job over the years, but that is faint praise coming from a guy like me. Radio and TV people have long been nothing but in-house shills for the teams they cover, with NEVER a critical word to be said about the team.

While I think The Fan always did a very good, professional broadcast, if I was a real FAN of the team, I would never listen to a game, or watch one with the sound on, on TV. I know I would get nothing but a steady diet of pablum from the corporate masters, and would puke if I spent too much time ingesting it.

But AWAY from the actual broadcast itself, I always thought The Fan did a good job dissecting the team, with Sandy Clough and Mike Evans never cow-towing to the Suits, and telling it mostly like it is.

Trust me, folks: I’ve heard way too many stories of Avalanche Suit muckety-mucks calling Fan personnel onto the carpet for even the slightest bit of what they perceived to be criticism of their hallowed teams. That made the on-air personnel petrified for their jobs all the time, and which gave YOU, the listener, a one-sided, watered-down, product. But I can’t sit here and lecture too much about that, because we all have a master to serve, and you don’t see me going on too much about my employers, do you?

Now that Kroenke further controls the radio end of his team’s broadcasts, you can expect the rah-rah, see-no-evil, hear-no-evil “product” to be increased about 100-fold.

I listen to the fan in the morning for possible Broncos talk. I think most of us have high def television and big screen LCDs for the actual games. The fan is what it is and this won't change the fan for me at all.

Agree completely. I'm not exactly a huge fan of Clough and Evans but they both seem like towering giants of sports journalism integrity compared to their colleagues. Scott and Al actually give Irv and Joe a run for their money in delivering vapid, brainless, irrelevant banter. And that's saying a lot. Still, if the crap water downed presentation of the Nuggets and Avs on Altitude TV is any indication, Avs and Nuggets fans will probably be lamenting that the games are no longer on the FAN.

well scott and al, I cant even listen to em. I just get mad at their completely irrellevant non sports related banter. Irv Joe and Jim are a tad bit less worse than scott and al, only because it is entertaining as hell when Bronco Billy calls predicting another 14-2 championship year while wondering how the opposing team will even score on us.

Can't stand Evans although I do like Sandy. Hope the Avs shltcan mose and put him back on with Sandy. Can't stand Rome.

Glad we have a ton of options in Orange COunty. ESPN, 570AM, 1090 in San Diego and 830AM (Arte Moreno owns this station and the Angels and has turned about 12 hours into sports talk). At least we have a choice to change to another sports station. 850 used to be more sports especially the drive home (as i listened in the winter/spring out here) with Scott and Dave. I thought that show was good and much Broncos talk throughout.

The absolute worst of them all though is Thierry Smith. Thank God he is only on for 1 hour. But its the worst hour on radio. I just change the station now.

Thierry is in a pretty advanced stage of - I think - arterial lateral schlerosis - or at any rate a very debilitating disease. I actually appreciate what the fan is doing for him in keeping him on the air .

I love Irv and Joe, they were always polite gentlemen and good for a lot of laughs whenever the FAN did their radio broadcast from the Broncos "Drive for Life" :P

Good i hope they bring in somebody from north of the border nobody in this town know shyt about hockey since haynes got sick, i quit listening to the fan in the daytime all toegether about 3 years ago i just didn't bother with what little bit of reporting they did do on the avs. They need somebody devoted to keeping up on the farm clubs and our youngsters doing well and actually reporting on it and in touch with what's going on with the other teams..
