Hi gang... I've got some news to share with regards to the board performance.
As many people noticed, the board went down hard this past afternoon. I wish that I had time to warn everybody about it, but it happened so fast that by the time I tried, it was already underway.
I called tech support today to inquire about an upgrade (I was actually planning on leaving this host, but I thought I'd see if they could offer anything before losing a customer). I learned that a new company had bought the company that we were previously hosted with. They looked at the server and were aghast at the service that our old provider had given us. I expressed to them my frustrations with them, and came clean that I was planning on leaving. He gave their pitch, "I hope you will consider giving us a fair chance to keep the business. We wouldn't have purchased their company if we didn't think we could provide our new customers with superior service." He explained to me that they would be willing to move us to their new Chicago datacenter at the price we have already paid, and from there we can begin negotiations for whatever additional services we need. We would go from a Celeron processor to a dual Xeon processor server, and gain a significant RAM boost on the new servers as well. I have agreed in principle to this proposal, and will talk to a sales guy next week to finalize the deal. The representative said that in the meantime, it's got to be killing me and our community that as the NFL season is ramping up, our server resources are tapping out. He offered to shut down the server immediately, pop in a new RAM chip, and start it back up so that we have the benefit of a new stick of RAM over the weekend. "No sense in prolonging the pain you guys are in until you talk to the Sales rep. We're going to take care of you. Stick with us, you'll see."
I am very optimistic about these prospects. As we hung up, I started on a message to let everyone know what was happening. I had figured, "yeah, sure, you'll get to it in an hour, maybe 24 hours if ever," remembering the service of the previous contractors. I constructed my post, and hit submit, and found that he had hung up the phone and got immediately to work on it.
Wow!
So, there you have it. There will be a few more outages in the near future. I plan on doing a board upgrade to the newest software version of the forum this weekend, and then later when we go live with the Chicago datacenter.
There is light at the end of this tunnel.

One thing... Please keep in mind that the RAM stick is a stop gap measure. It's not a silver bullet. But it should help out considerably.

Great news Taco. Let us know if the cost goes up. We can start a PBS type telethon. Hopefully they won't be too outrageous. I thought something was up but figured it was my IT at work. So that is good news.

Most of what needs to be done will be done 'after' the call to sales and move to a new server. That's when the optimizing comes in. I PM'd TJ info on that earlier tonight.
The big thing is getting on a solid node (computer) in a good DC (datacenter), then he can work with support and vBulletin to optimize MySQL, Apache (including cache) and PHP for vBulletin.
Things are moving in the right direction, and I think you guys are going to like the results.

The only part about all this that really bugs me is - if the OrangeMane server is going to be in Chicago now, that means broncosteven will get the info before the rest of us.
I just don't like the sound of that.

Well he'll prolly turn avatars off on gamedays, and that's when the speed is really important.
But people like avatars, me included, I think because they're like your face, your personality. You can make a statement with them. Plus I remember people by their avatars ... I associate users and their posts with that image. It's less interesting, less lively without them imho.

I'm guessing with a server upgrade and optimized server, that avvys won't be a problem. Lots of boards with FAR more members have avatars. It's rare to see them turned off.

Come on, if you don't suck it up, and give up the six pack, then TJ is going to be forced to upgrade to a Pentium III with 256MB of Ram and things will slow down instead of speed up.
It ALL comes down to whether or not you are willing to give up that one six pack and then visit paypal. If we don't get avatars back, we are going to blame you, because you wouldn't give up one six pack... Ha!

Let me know if you want me to show up at their Co-lo and work them over for you. Sounds like they are near my hood.
Having a OM "Rep" in for a walk through of their co-lo hotel might show them that the Mane is a truely National if not world wide presence and garner you some more cachet...and maybe some more disk cache also...

Oh man ... that's a great idea. At the moment - that one moment in every sales pitch where the air goes dead for a second - TJ just say, "well how about this? I'll send my guy in to see you there in your office and he'll evaluate the situation on the ground. If everything looks good, I guess we'll have a deal."
That'll put 'em on their heels.
The best thing we all can do to help TJ out is to click on the ads a few times a day.
I'm sure a lot of people out there have Firefox with Ad Block like me, but take 5 minutes a day to pop open IE and click away at the ads for a little bit. If we all were willing to do that each day TJ wouldn't even need to worry about these problems.
He might develop a Pac-Man issue though, telling the hosts he's gonna "make it rain" if they do a good job.

Just don't let google (or whoever is the ad broker) see posts like this. They frown upon any coordinated efforts to run up click counts.

Technically you are correct. Though enforcement is an issue. Social site owners are not liable for content posted on them except authored by them. Craigslist, MySpace and several message boards have already fought against this very thing and won.
TJ is ****ing up anyway going through the middle man. He should work out deals direct with advertisers and screw Google. Why should they get a piece of the advertising pie? They are not hosting anything and they are not selling anything. More money going direct. Its a little bit more work initially but the payoff is better.

I haven't heard that. It makes sense to me that Google would expect the site owner to be able to moderate a forum more easily than a social networking site. I'd be careful.
Regarding direct ads - it's a lot more work. A lot. I prefer brokered ads myself, the payout is usually better anyway.

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 is likely what he is referring to.
However, I don't think it would protect him from having Google kill his adsense account. It's more of a criminal/civil liability protection for owners of websites, so that they are not considered the publisher/speaker/author of content posted on their sites.

Regardless tnedator, you really think Google has the time to peruse the literally thousands of message boards and every single post? Algorithms can only do so much and Google's clearly doesnt have any way of filtering meaning....yet. Otherwise Id get my searches right on the first time every time.
All TJ has to do is say "Dont do that" and he can prove to Google he is not soliciting clicks on ads. This post right here will be flagged by Google's watch but I am neither soliciting clicks for ads nor suggesting anyone do so. Im just talking about the concept.
Dont click on ads to click on ads anyway. Dumbasses. Click on ads if you intend to buy something. People pay money for that. You are stealing by falsely clicking ads. Theives. Unless its a competitor then all's fair in love and war. Outbid me you son of a bitch, we'll see.
