Lay off a bunch of workers, forcing them to take more government susidized handouts all while Democrats get to pretend that they care about the little guy. In fact I now understand the Democrat strategy. If enough people lose thier jobs they will begin to vote Democrat, so why not hasten the process so that they can replenish the supply of Democrat voters every single year!!!! So much more effective and who cares about the people.

My tax money back in my pockets is always a welcome change. This beats a "gas tax holiday" by a mile.
I did the math on that proposal, and I figured my wife and I would save roughly $40 bucks for a three month gas tax holiday ($20 bucks per vehicle).

In principle, I agree with you. In this case, he would take profits from a legal business (oil company) and redistribute the wealth. There is something inherently wrong with that in America.

too funny. massive praises to bush for the $600, and yet obama gets sarcastic "boo hoo for the oil companies" responses for $1000.

If Exxon wants to make as much money as they can; they can't simply law off people and expect to make up the profits, because they'd lose production.
This might be a bluff, but it might force Exxon etc. to stop the price gouging, and bring prices of everything down.

Idiots (these yahoos that think giving everyone a little spending cash solves anything). Take the $1000 x 200 million and invest it in renewable and alternative energies, research and subsidies for this industry and you automatically create new companies, jobs and whole new industries.
Is there one forward thinking politician in DC?

The only reason for the Obama campaign to come up with this is to counter McFlip's (or is it McBush?) constant harping on offshore drilling. McFlip's pimp: We'll pump more oil and lower gas prices. Obama's pimp: We'll take money from Big Oil and give it to you to pay for high gas prices. Another American campaign for president right out of Candyland.
Give you a thousand bucks...and RAISE TAXES!
You said the exact same thing in a thread on the main page. I pointed out exactly just how wrong you were. Why not go read that and come back with response?
Sorry, democrat does not equal "more taxes for everyone". Only "more taxes if you make >$250K a year" and even then it'll be less than that tax group paid under Clinton.
Actually have facts before spouting off.
In related news though, McCain plans to run this country for $600B less than Bush's current budget, you know, the one that has seen our government drive us further and further into the red every year? Yeah, way to strengthen the dollar there!
A windfall profits tax makes perfect sense to me since many of these oil companies are making those windfall profits off of gaming the post-Phil Gramm's Enron loophole utilities trading system, and at the same time getting handouts from our own government. 'Bout time the government stepped in and made them give some of that money back.
All you people opposed to this need to wake the hell up. The oil companies paid guys like Gramm (and McCain) to not only look the other way when they screwed us, but to make it legal. For all the right's talk of not backing down to terror and don't "cut and run" they sure have a hard time finding their spines when it comes time to hold our representation accountable when they sell us out.

$300? Unless you are in the lowest income tax bracket (basically paying no income tax at all), you should have received $600. :kiddingme

This is my answer from them for an AGI in low 6 figures.
Economic Stimulus Payment Calculator
You do not qualify for an economic stimulus payment
According to law, the economic stimulus payment amount that you would otherwise be entitled to receive is reduced by 5% of the amount that your Tax Year 2007 Adjusted Gross Income exceeds $75,000. You would have been eligible for an economic stimulus payment of $600, but your AGI exceeds $75,000 by enough to reduce that amount to zero.
However, if your situation changes during 2008, you may be able to claim an economic stimulus credit on your Tax Year 2008 return.

So Obama wants to still keep the hi tax on oil for congress to blow, but take profits from a legit business and redistribute it? Didnt they try this in some country with the hammer and sickle? Smells unAmerican like to me. How about we all invest in the oil companies and get our money back that way?

They're buying back all their stock and churning it for profit. Pretty soon, they might not be public anymore.
From <a href="http://cafehayek.typepad.com/hayek/2008/08/obamanomics.html">Don Boudreaux</a>:
In other words, a critical part of Sen. Obama's strategy for reigning in high gasoline prices is to subsidize gasoline consumption and more heavily tax its production. This plan - which increases the demand for gasoline and reduces its supply - makes as much sense as trying to put out a fire by dowsing it with jet fuel.

This is very similar to Clinton's holiday tax rebate, which Obama objected to.

Same idea, different way to get it, but same purpose:
Buying votes!
What's next?
Raising payroll and capital-gains taxes to help the economy recover?? Hilarious!

Oh I know how we got here, and as I've commented before, I think Bush and his cronies are criminally incompetent.
I'm not impressed with either candidate or their plans.
I'm hoping one of them forges an agenda that will actually work. We need one
But I did enjoy the irony of Obama adopting Clinton's original idea....which I also thought was an attempt to buy votes.
I don't hold McCain in any higher regard.

Is the $1000 the "change" we are supposed to believe in? Maybe he should change his slogan to "cash you can believe in".

Obama's economic and energy plans both call for billions of dollars of governmental funding for various paths of renewable energies, as well as a system in order to help commercialize those new creations and get them into the market place.
Better yet, it actually has the government playing role of an investor, taking its fair cut back after a product is successfully commercialized and putting it back into the program for future use.
This $1000 rebate deal is something Obama has been talking about for a while. Its the only legitimate way to off-set gas prices in the short term, more drilling won't do it, throwing $300M after a better battery that might not even be commercially viable won't do it either. This gives an immediate off-set.
I don't think that is the real goal of Obama's windfall profits tax though. He knows as well as the rest of us that big oil companies will just turn more profits into R&D and research in order to avoid giving those windfall checks out. But that pretty much accomplishes one of our biggest needs, the oil companies putting significantly more R&D into how to safely and cost effectively drill OCS and extracting usable petrol from kerogen/shale oil.
