Just a reminder their will be no more Training Camp Reports because you all being a bunch a jerks. It hot out there and I'm not getting any rep points.

Defense:

CB's:
24 Bailey, Champ: Just Champ Being Champ. Total shutdown. Jay tried to throw to his side and the ball just got scared screamed and ran behind the ref.

32 Bly, Dre': Had a really good day. Solid coverage and almost came up with a pick toeard the end of practice.

22 Foxworth, Domonique: Making a serious push to be the second CB next to Champ. On one play got beat deep recovered and batted the ball down.

41 Paymah, Karl: Having a solid camp. Not much to report which is kind of a good thing.

26 Williams, Jack: Right now he is running with the 3's but he's got a spot on the team. Something funny did happen though. Jack was coming in to help on a tackle on a run play. He rushes into the crowd. And all you see is arms, legs and he body just fly out of the pile. Appearently he got hhit by one of the DL and just bounced off.

25 Morton, Christian: Unnoticed

31 Reid, Lamont: Unnoticed

S's

21 Abdullah, Hamza: Right now its really hard for Jay to throw down the middle. Yesterday McCree knocks down a pass over the middle and he's looking at Hamza on the other side.

20 McCree, Marlon: Not John Lynch in the box but good. And you don't have to take him out on passing downs.

36 Barrett, Josh: He is starting to get it in practice. He is starting to stick his nose in on run plays and crash on the deep out. On one play nearly had a pick off of Jay when he threw toward D Jackson on a roll away route.

33 Manuel, Marquand: Did see much from him.

LB's
All the LB's had a good day. No blown coverages

DL's
94 Moss, Jarvis: Had a great day rushing. On 1-on-1 drills took it to Ryan Harris and every other T except for Clady. Clady was the only T that could handle every End that came his way. Even Doom and the reason was his feet. It was shuffle shuffle. Like a deck of cards. No waist bending ah-lah Foster.

92 Dumervil, Elvis: Being short and strong is what makes him so great as pass rusher. Its hard for a OL to put his hands on his chest to control him.

90 Peterson, Kenny: Working wiht the 1's and gets a push up the middle on pass rush

63 Robertson, Dewayne: Practiced today. I think he is the type of play we need to have. Almost requires a double team on the run and the pass.

96 Crowder, Tim: If Moss and Doom is Maverick then Crowder is Iceman. He's ice cold do something stupid, get lazy, and he has you.

60 Engelberger, John: unnoticed

93 Clemons, Nic: Most interesting thing thing was that the coaches were on him the whole drill which I think is a good thing. Its like its only the parents that yell at you are the ones that love you thing.

79 Thomas, Marcus: Runs with the 2's and 3's shows good power and quickness.

98 Mallard, Josh: The "Rocky" of the team. Tall on heart short on talent.

BTW just kidding about "no more reports" . Friday Practices are closed to the public so nobody will have reports.

If Doom and Moss are Maverick and Crowder is Iceman, who is Goose?

Can I suggest Engelberger?

I'm actually starting to feel quite good about the defense - although one often feels good after camp, and it usually lasts untill the first meltdown in the first game.....

However last year we had NO-ONE in the middle of the D-line - I mean no-one. This year we have a legit player in Robertson plus Thomas has a year under his belt. With that one-two combo we may find by midseason we're only asking journeymen like McKinley et al to provide rotation and depth which is what we want - lat year we were depending on them as starters.

Also, I can't belive the LB corps won't be streets ahead of where it was last year. Webster may finally be 'getting it' and whatever happens I think the competition between him and Niko is helping. DJ playing in his natural position and Boss rounding things out nicely with plenty of pace.

We also seem to have two physical safeties for run support who aren't a liability in the passing game.

So all in all, I have good reason to suspect that the run defense has a chance to be at least average which is all we need it to be to substantially improve on last year.

Looking to the pass defense, the projected Nickel combo of Dumervil, Moss, Robertson and Mallard looks like it has a chance of actually getting to the QB - almost getting back to the halcyon days of when we had Berry, Heyward and Pryce in the nickel D-line formation (2003?), although this time we actually have a secondary too so if we don't get the sacks we should get some ints.

Throw into all of that the fact that we have more starters returning and we're not installing a new defense so there should be more familiarity and cohesion than there was last season, I'm sure we'll be able to make a substantial improvement

As I said at the start, this optimism can all all disappear after the first real game where any weaknesses get exposed, but honestly, the only way is up for the defense this year.

Thanks US!

Question for ya: is it safe to say that Moss has been the best pass rushing DE in camp so far? It sounds like it when you imply he is the only one that can get by Clady, and then only sometimes.

Thanks!

I'd have to yes. But keep in mind on any one play there are literally 20 different things happening at one time and its hard to see what assignment that he has and how he's proforming. On 1-on-1 battles its easier to see what kind of skills he has. I mean look back at all the other camp report from the past. You'd think that we had 7 or 8 probowlers on our team. Thats why I included in that report about missing on the combo block.

Looking to the pass defense, the projected Nickel combo of Dumervil, Moss, Robertson and Mallard looks like it has a chance of actually getting to the QB.

Right now the nickel looks like Doom and Moss at End, EE and Josh Mallard at DT, DJ and Boss at LB, Saftey has Hamza and McCree, and Champ Foxworth on the outside with Bly in the slot.
