Yeah, I said it. I like the old guy. I don't think he'll be making that much of a contribution on the field, but from these comments he made today, I feel he's a pretty good leader, and a great veteran to have around:

MICHAEL PITTMAN

On Coach Shanahan’s approach to camp:
“This is my first camp here, but this has been my easiest camp. Last year I was at Tampa, the past six years I was at Tampa. I think Coach is doing an excellent job keeping us fresh. Having one practice in the morning, and we come out here and hustle really hard and he rewards us with a walk-through in the afternoon. As a veteran, an 11-year guy, I can tell that my body feels much fresher. I’m taking more reps now because one of our fullbacks is hurt, but I feel a whole lot better now in this part of camp.”

On the competition at running back:
“We are friends. It’s a great competition right now. Selvin Young, he’s the lead guy. Andre (Hall) is another good guy. Ryan (Torain), a rookie draft pick, myself. It’s going to be great competition. Last year, I believe at this time Selvin was fourth on the depth chart. Look at him now—He is number one. With this offense, and with the coaching staff, I believe they will play the best player.”

On his impressions of QB Jay Cutler:
“I like Jay. He is a laid back, mellow type of guy. I’m used to Jeff Garcia, the fiery type. Jay is a great quarterback. He is a young guy, but he shows great leadership. I think he has a bright future for him.”

On lining up as a fullback:
“I’ll do it, I’m not a fullback, but I will do whatever my coach asks me to do. I’m a tailback, and that is what I have been drafted to be coming out of college. If my coach asks me to go in there and feel some blocks, I’ll feel some blocks. I’m 220 pounds, I’m strong, but I am not as big as some of these linebackers in league, but I’ll do whatever they ask of me.”

On his durability:
“I bring a lot to the table with myself, being a veteran, being smart of course. I bring a lot. I can catch the ball well out of the backfield, and I can run the football. Just being around the league and seeing defenses, I try and figure out what they try and bring to the table. I bring a lot to this offense.”

On advice he has given to rookie RB Ryan Torain:
“I have just been trying to keep these young guys motivated. And really the odds are so wide open, so big, the coaches are coming down on them. I have just been telling them the things I learned as a rookie. I had it a whole lot worse. I came out in ‘98, and everybody was on me. I was carrying everybody’s pads off the field. I have been trying to keep them motivated because sometimes the confidence falls. Being a veteran and being around for so long, I just try and pick them up. Ryan and the other guys are going to be the future of this team. I myself only have about two or three years left in me. Those young guys are going to be around for a long time.”

On playing fullback this season:
“I am just going to playing there until Peyton (Hillis) gets back. I am just filling in and doing the best I can. I am running in there full speed and lowering the shoulder. All the blocks are not great, but I’m not a natural fullback. There are sometimes where they have me block as a halfback. I’m not complaining about it. I’m happy to be here, and I’ll do whatever they ask of me.”

On if he has ever played fullback before:
“No I have never played fullback in my life. I was always halfback, receiver, strong safety. In my career since high school, I have always played halfback. But fullback, I am fine with it. If coach asks me to do it, I’ll do it and do the best I can.”

Pittman will make the team. He'll provide vet leadership and great short yardage play.

Young, Torain, Pittman and Hall those are the four RBs, pretty cut and dry.

Man no wonder why we haven't been playing well recently.......i went to browns training camp the other day ( i was off work and bored) they have a full practice in the morning, a walk through around 1, then another full late afternoon practice.......i think these guys need to be pushed.

Browns camp is nothing to emmulate. They lose more players than anyone before the season even begins.

lol good point.......:notworthy

however, i think there should be a happy medium between the two......i think not pushing the guys hard enough is bad.......not only from the lack of practice..........but then when you start pushing them during the season.....they think its a punishment or something.

This is the best part for me. Shows he's a true pro. Hopefully some of his maturity will rub off on a few dudes.

I have to wonder if you've been watching this dude play? He hasn't been anything worth while in four years. And even at his best he was a back up. This guy can't play. I think coaches fall in love with his body and don't look at his ability.........homos.

See, he said all the right things but I think if you read between the lines, you get that he REALLY doesn't want to be a FB. He'll do it, but he made sure to repeat and emphasize that he never played the position, is a HB, and is not a FB... and incase anyone missed it, he made sure to mention he is not a FB. I think FB is his key to a roster spot though so he better embrace it.

Shanahan rewards good play and punishes bad play. That is why the first full speed practice in the morning is so important. If the team does well, then Shanahan acknowledges their effort by resting them more. If they have a subpar morning practice, Shanahan will push them harder in the pm practice.

But if Hillis is really coming on as a potential starter then Pittman can take Sapp's spot. Sapp as a FB has been very unmemorable so I don't see why Pittman couldn't manage mediocrity in that department while being an emergency option. He seems to have more potential than Sapp does.

Pittman has one thing going for him - he can show these young guys what can happen if a team makes the playoffs and is focused in the playoffs and elevates their individual games. A SB victory. Dude had the best series of games in his career in the playoffs when Tampa won the SB. If I remember right he had a lot of carries and only fumbled once. His YPC was not great, but he ground out a lot of yards. And didn't fumble. Maybe these young guys won't listen, who knows.

I was really happy that we brought him in. We haven't been hearing very many good things about him coming out of training camp and I wouldn't be suprised if he was an early cut but I think that his vet status is something that could definitely help our young backs.

If shanny doesn't think we have a short yardage guy who can get it done right away there is another reason to keep him.

he had 120+ plus yards in the SB.

Is Aldridge available for the PS?

Yes, he's a rookie UDFA, he'll almost definitely be on the PS. Unless he really underwhelms, then they'll just let him walk, but I'm betting PS and protection for an injury to a returner and/or Hall or Young.

Yes, but cah is 100% correct. Pittman's key to a roster spot will be that he is a 3rd RB and can play FB in a pinch. That opens the door for us to keep only one FB (Hillis). The way I see it, he's competing with Sapp for the final roster spot.

I do disagree with most though. I think that they're going to find a spot for Aldridge on this team. He's too fast and explosive not to. Plus, the options he offers for Shanny on third downs are too good to pass up. He has outstanding receiving ability. In fact, I wondered at one point if he would come into the league as a RB or WR. We're not talking about a RB that can just catch little 5 and 6 yard passes and make something happen after the catch. We're talking about a RB that can run a deep out, break on a dime, and make a stretched out catch while dragging his feet to make the catch in bounds. For a coach that likes to empty the back field, guys like he and Payton Hillis are very attractive options!

Exactly on point...when was the last time we had guy catching balls out of hte backfield??? Shanny loved to run the plays but I can remember Tater Bell dropping swing passes like it was yesterday and that was about the last time we tried doing anything with our HBs out of hte backfield.

The only guy that has been catching for us out of hte backfield has been Sapp and that's because he is totally unaccounted for on most plays...i would love to see ANOTHER option for Jay to throw to...its been too much of him forcing it downfield becuase there are no checkdown routes...

Pittman's blocking scares me though....he's never been one to step in there and take one for hte QB...he could get Jay lit up bad once or twice this season

Pittman has to make the team. He can do everything Sapp can do and he is really the only veteran running back we have. Selvin, Hall, Torrain, and Aldridge could learn a lot from a ten year vet like Pittman.

Pittman is terrible...

I have watched him in Tampa Bay for years...

On and off the field he has had issues...

All Buc fans know how bad he is and anyone that thinks he's good let me help you...he sucks...

Receiving skills was all he had and he hasn't even done that well in camp from what I hear...
