Day two from Broncos camp engendered a lot of interesting observations-the first of such starts with rookie receiver and returner Eddie Royal. The second round draft pick out of Virginia Tech looked steady in his routes and even more sure-handed with his catches. Royal’s receiving game today was practically automatic. You can tell Royal is centered in his focus, and has no desire to project a superficial flash. Royal didn’t necessarily impress off the long ball, his opportunities were in the flat and off the intermediate routes, and yes he made the most of them. Consequently I feel Royal can make a case to Mike Shanahan to contribute on offense, although I agree with Dre Bly that the majority of his reps will still be on special teams.
Royal is 5’10 and 182 pounds, and thus makes a slight physical first impression. However, Royal is determined to convince coach that his portfolio is more diversified, and he just might do it. Royal told me in interviews after practice that he’s been studying (more like dusting off) old vintage videos of Rod Smith to pick up more tips. Additionally, Royal said Champ Bailey taught him how to better disguise his routes in practice today. So in conclusion with Royal-we’ll see.
My second keynote is about Tony Scheffler. The third year pro who ranked 10th amongst receiving tight ends last season certainly didn’t fall below rank today. He was about as fluid as that liquid stuff in the movie the Terminator-meaning, he was as fluid as fluid comes. If I’m Daniel Graham, I am getting a little jealous of Scheffler’s chemistry with Jay Cutler. Their connection is as inescapable as it is unsurprising; an observation that has to provide Shanahan reassurance with a pending suspension of top flight receiver Brandon Marshall. Despite problems with a lingering foot injury, Scheffler told me he went through practice today without any pain (although I do remember thinking the fact that Tony made note of his lack of pain still displays a concern he could regress).
Then there were the running backs.
I had high hopes in observing Ryan Torain today. I have already interviewed the 5th round pick out of ASU several times, and thus I was very clued into his collegiate statistics and budding potential. This is a kid who ran for over 1,200 yards his junior season before a lis-franc injury cut his stellar senior season short.
I really like Torain’s size compared to the rest of the running backs, and his downhill style is ideal for Denver’s system. However (and yes there is a however), I was a bit disappointed in his performance today. Torain at times seemed unsure of himself, and unfamiliar with the playbook. His uncertainty led to a lack of focus, and in turn, a very noticeable fumble right in front of me. My observations today though are tempered by the memory that he is a rookie. Anytime I forgot that, I was reminded of it when the defense gave Torain a rookie rude awakening.
The defense took every opportunity to throw him to the ground and welcome him to the NFL. So all I can say to Torain now is welcome, and hurry up and get better. Here’s my last caveat though, I know he will improve because if I am to judge by the way he gives interviews, Torain has a steady determination. He remained unphased with my questioning of his performance today, and the criticism he received from both Shanahan, and running backs coach Bobby Turner.
And last but not least there was Selvin Young.
All I have to say about him is that he was great, great, great. His speed was unmatched. His ability to turn on a dime was unparalleled; and his ability to evade was unquestionable. Young remains the clear number one for me. My only doubts for him are his durability, and his ability to gain tough yards up the middle. If Young can’t do the job on first and second down, enter Michael Pittman and his huge biceps. We are sure Pittman can pull a least a half a yard off his guns alone…
Stay tuned.

i really want to see more big plays this year resulting in TDs, i thought that was a crucial part of our O that was missing last year
hopefully royal and young can provide that for us with there youth and explosive ability

Royal looked good in some drills, but i'm not sure I would say the theme of today's camp was "Royal's day." He didn't get too many reps and wasn't anything totally fantastic. He showed flashes of speed, but he's really raw - especially in understanding how to attack coverages. He is extremely quick and has great speed and good hands.
The big winner's today and I agreed with most of them: Marshall, Young, Mallard, Scheffler, Moss and Bly. The big surprise was Glenn Martinez. He looked better than last year by a million miles.

I don't know why, but when I read posts liket his about martinez or nate jackson, or anyone else that is somewhat unheralded, I really get upset.
I mean, why would you not want martinez to make the roster? If he does, it means he earned it, right?
People like Nate Jackson and Martinez are exactly what I'd like to see round out our roster. They work hard to make use of what talent they have and earn every rep. that they get.
Martinez is more than a willing blocker in the running game, and the reports make it sound like he's stepping up in the catching department as well. I hate to get dramatic about it, but it's just so ****ing retarded to read posts like that day in and day out. I mean, and really, I also hate resorting to tried and true cliches, but you do realize that at some point Rod Smith and Ed McCafferey were in the same boat that Martinez is in right now. Maybe I'm missing something?

No guy would've written that article.
Selvin Young was "great, great, great"? Come on!
"If Young can’t do the job on first and second down, enter Michael Pittman and his huge biceps. We are sure Pittman can pull a least a half a yard off his guns alone… "
Is this a volunteer? That article was written well from a grammatical point of view but terrible from a serious reporter point of view. She was one step away from commenting on some guy's ass.

sorry to ruin your funk, i dont know why but i just dislike him.
IMO when your talking about a guy who is gonna be your 5-6 reciever anyways id rather him have some more potential, either way your not gonna get much playing time but at least you could have something there
he just has nothing going for him other than an above avg camp thus far
hes small, slow, weak, he had his usual job of returns likely taken away by royal, and hes ok at catching
same goes for nate, i have nothing personal against the guy, i just think there is no point to keeping him around when hes gonna get hurt or not make a big difference . . . .

Exactly. Everyone wants the feel good story but then they want the people to fail because they aren't from heralded schools or big name athletes. Rod Smith was practice squad at one point after being cut by.. was it Seattle? Why can't Martinez get a fair shake to be the next one, god knows everyone's gonna be looking for the next Rod Smith for years to come.
I'm still on the Martinez bandwagon and I think he could be an emergency #2 after watching some of his play.

Not that having your own opinion is a bad thing, but I've actually noticed the exact opposite on him. He's got decent size (he's no 5'9"), good speed, great hands... I've heard a knock on him being that he doesn't get open well but that can come with learning better routes.

i mean hes like 6ft 190lbs, he certainly isnt strong and has good speed, but its not something that separates him from others in my mind
but like i said i just dont like him no real reasoning behind it, i have nothing against small school guys, i liked hall before any of his big games and many other small name guys
who knows i always hope on guys like this but its just my gut so disagree with me if you will

yeah, he's not a Matt Jones 6'6 nor does he run like Michael Vick but there's nothing that says he can't succeed. He could very well be the next Subway clerk, we'll just have to see if he develops.

It seems every training camp we have a rookie receiver who can run and catch the ball just fine until .... the hitting starts. I do think pro caliber defensive backs get into the receivers heads once they can make them pay for their catches. I will hold my opinion until pre-season ends.

Is a 4.29 40 slow these days? More than I dislike people hating on certain players, is when those people are completely uninformed.
6'1" and 200 pounds is also hardly small. It's not big like Marshall, but about average for an NFL WR.

Give this guy a chance. He has shown good hands and an ability to get open. He needs a little more weight on him but he could be simply a late bloomer like Ed McCaffrey. Ed's pre-Bronco career wasn't impressive and two teams gave up on him.

Give me a team of Martinezes and Mallards. Both guys go balls out all game. Mallard may look a crazy psycho but he had 4 sacks last season. Martinez is an unhearalded player who without all the hype has worked his way onto the field. He doesn't drop balls nor bitch about passes. These are the guys you need on your team.

I'm glad to hear Martinez is doing well. He stood out last year in a number of areas. He strikes me as the type of player a football team needs on the roster. With signing Jackson and Colbert I wonder if he'll get a fair shake.

Martinez just reminds me of reggie rivers out of control running style begging to be lit up and fumble the ball in key situations.
