View Full Version : Why Hillis went late/scandals at Arkansas

This reads like watergate, supposedly Hillis is in there, there are PDF files, the DEA, you name it.

When I was in the hospital, there was all this hate on Nutt...evidently,he had accumulated an immense amount of baggage "southern" style. juicy stuff if your interested. 07 was supposed to finally be "their year", but QB issues and Marcus Monk getting injured caused the air attack to be crippled. If they had run the wild hog exclusively, I think they would of been 11-1

Anyone that's extremely bored and actually read all 300 pages of that want to give a paragraph summary?

Still, why did Peyton Hillis fall to the seventh round, the 227 th player taken overall ?

Many Houston Nutt critics want to believe the former UA coach did not give him a good review to NFL scouts, that Hillis’ honesty had rubbed Nutt the wrong way.

Josh Melton, a four-year letterman on the Razorbacks’ offensive line, called Sports Animals on Arkansas Radio Network last week, unsolicited, to say he believed Nutt had told scouts there were character and injury issues and that Hillis is tough to have in the locker room.

That last one has a familiar ring because Hillis was not afraid to speak his mind going all the way back to his sophomore season, when he told the media he might move himself to linebacker, which caused a stir with fans and the coaching staff.

Having read a little about Nutt on that site (but not having heard of him prior to that) I'm tempted to say that if Hillis fell out with him he must be a good guy!!!

However I wouldn't want to suggest that reading a couple of articles can really give you an insight. It just seems that this is the epitome of the good-ole-boys mentality where merit counts for naught and sucking up to the boss is everything. Something I personally hate!

But I'm sure there are people on the board who know a lot more about Arkansas than I do. I can barely pronounce it properly...

Or maybe Hillis went in the 7th because he is not very good?

Or maybe Hillis went in the 7th because he is not very good?

If you'd watched him play you would know that isn't true.

He's better than Brian Leonard at just about everything and Leonard was a first day pick last year.

A combination of poor coach comments and a general low valuation of FBs in general in this draft dropped him into the 7th. He's a very talented player who can fill a lot of different roles.

I was more impressed with him than McFadden when they played the eventual national champions in their LSU game. Hillis can ball. However being a fullback and other concerns screams "late round value".

Nutt rubbing is frowned upon in Arkansas.

and Brian Leonard is a player that is too slow for RB and not big enough for FB....

He is nothing more and will be nothing more then Hape II. Will make a decent play once in a while and be invisible for the rest of the time.

I hope I am wrong but have been pretty spot on with my Denver Rookie Estimations the last few years....(nailed DWill) when most people crapped on him but was wrong about the Claw....

My impression was that with an "epic" team assembled that was good, and could of been better if Monk wasnt injured and that qb was lost, this was supposed to be their year in the SEC.

I havent read it yet, but I heard alot on the news, he definetely was run out of fayettville.

I just always enjoyed that Arkansas's coach was named Nutt and their starting QB for a while was named Dick

Honesty ... is that the new euphemism?

When he commented on the state of contract negotiations this week that he'll have his chance in the league, whether "it's here or somewhere else," well, that's all we need to know. I guarantee this guy will be an attitude problem down the road. Despite being such a late pick, I think will make the team and/or practice squad, but he will also be a problem. Mark it down.

Agreed. And the better he is , the more of a problem he will be.

Leonard has better speed, but both are underrated blockers who are better served not being used in the traditional fullback role Hillis is way better at running stop routes!

He was Used mostly on swing routes and dump offs. Still, he's a good blue-collar type who can help in a variety of roles, rather than being utilized strictly as a blocker. Every roster could use a versatile player like Hillis, especially in the late rounds.

Feeling that they were overworking Hillis his first three seasons,
running back coach Tim Horton reduced the fullback's work load as a senior so his number's could have been a lot higher if it were not for Tim Horton.

In 44 games at Arkansas, Hillis started 30 times, including one start at tailback. He gained 959 yards with 12 touchdowns on 203 carries (4.7-yard average) and hauled in 118 passes for 1,195 yards (10.1 avg), including 11 scores. He attempted two passes, returned 12 kickoffs for 213 yards (17.8 avg) and gained 257 yards on 25 punt returns (10.3 avg). He scored 138 points, recorded nine tackles (five solo) and totaled 2,624 all-purpose yards, an average of 59.64 yards per game.

Or maybe Hillis went in the 7th because he is not very good?
If you have time ! Study or watch how this kid played you would know he was worth a 7th round pick and maybe higher if your team is running a west coast offense.

is that 'cause Shanny is, in some respects, like Nutt?

Hahahaha ... well HE said it, not me. I'll grant you he is a very good player (though not a bulldozer like Howard Griffith or Owen Schmitt), and he WILL make the team or PS, mostly b/c we have no true fullbacks on the roster (Sapp and Bell are converted TBs, and Kyle Johnson and Paul Smith are gone.)

But seriously, a good, realistic goal for him is a Patrick Hape-level player in a year or two. People call him an H-Back-type, but we already have an awesome H-Back-type in Scheffler (Graham is the true TE).

Hillis' problem won't be Shanahan as orinj mentioned ... Shanny obviously only cares about performance. The bigger problem might be his teammates. Any selfish, self-centered personality seems to me something Jay is not gonna like. And Hillis's ego WILL want the ball. We'll see ...

I'm visiting Minnesota right now, but I live in Arkansas, and nutt rubbing is all good.

Actually, so is slick legging, I don't think you want me to explain that one.....

The day they gave my sister custody of our two children, was the worst day of my life.

No, no, no Ray.. Way to definite.

The correct way to do this is to wait until he fails before you say anything....THEN claim that you have been saying he would suck since the beginning.

Come on! You should know better. notsofast

You seem very interested in Arkansas yet the people there are still pissed that you didnt finish their roof over the state. Must be the pretty nurses that took care of you.
