I think there is some merit to pushing the "ethics" of what technology can be used for. I mean, not all of it is bad and will kill you.
Didn't love and technology save us from an asteroid?
I mean, i read a good bit of Phillip K Dick - and i think it's worth the philosophical arguments over the ethics of technology to look at the worst case scenario. Us humans have a good track record at it.

A lot of these themes were around long before Hollywood existed. I'd say the "prostitute with a heart of gold" trope is about 2,000 years old.

Unless you view it as a metaphor.
If you look at the devil inhabiting as Lucifer the light bringer, you could actually twist the story to say the priests drove enlightenment from the girl's body... which is funny on many different historical levels.
