As I mentioned in another thread, I'm considering third party this year. Both of the "major" candidates are horrible choices...

Hey! Where's the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man option?
http://www.16bit.com/toypics/ghostbusters/marshmallow/front.jpg
The reasons I will vote for Obama are;
1. I do not believe he is bought and paid for by special interests.
2. He is refreshingly intelligent enough to know he doesn't have all the answers and is smart enough to recognize wise council when he encounters it.
3. God doesn't tell him what to do via a voice in his head.
4.I believe he will be a president for the people for a change.

How does not voting help your country?
How does voting on a list of terrible canidates help my country?
How does voting for an evil (Bush, say) help?
Rather ironic coming from someone down in Mexico in his hidey-hole.

Write in - Ron Paul
No chance in hell of winning, but at least I can say I voted for who I want as president.
How does voting on a list of terrible canidates help my country?
Write in someone you think would make a good president at least that would take you out of the large group that says they do not care enough to vote which sends a signal to the Bushes of the world they can do what ever they want because the voters do not care enough to vote. A vote for some one not on the ballot sends the message you care but do not like the limited choices. Isn't that a much better message to send with your vote?

Oh and read my above post
Amazingly we have 20 votes in and only 1 for McCain

I highly doubt that anyone in the goverment looks any deeper than who actually wins the election. Although you make a great point there really is no difference between me writing in the name "Bullwinkle" and not showing up to vote at all. In the end the overall result of being overlooked is the same.
I do think they keep stats of "other" votes and when the numbers are analyzed and strategies are formed for the next general election it does get considered, anyway at least you will have expressed your displeasure of the choices available and the short comings of the current system and not fallen into the place of apathy so many others have.

Precisely.
Anyone who votes 3rd party or write in with the full knowledge that their candidate will not win is taking the easy way out and doing no better than not voting. The correct response if you are going to vote is to be realistic, do the research and find which of the two candidates is the best. Either influence the election or don't but be honest with yourself. If you're throwing away your vote, save the gas money that it'll take to drive to the polls or mail your vote in.
It's a shame that these people feel they're so absolutely clever and brilliant that they're going to write in a candidate with absolutely no chance of winning and beat the system. Well, guess what you educated minds... there's gonna be blacks voting for Obama and whites voting for Mccain while you sit by idle making a point and writing in your hairdresser/paperboy/insignificant nominee. I can live with knowing I wont influence the vote because I wont vote as I believe a no vote is better than an uneducated one and I don't care that much. If you want to act is if you're educated and wise in the ways of politics, do something smart and vote for the best candidate THAT HAS A CHANCE OF WINNING.

This is why we'll always be in a 2 party system.
Until the 3rd party candidate is actually competitive, you're in a 2 party system anyways. If the 3rd party candidate was commanding any votes, it'd be a totally different situation. If you think different, I'll give you a million bucks if a 3rd party candidate wins this election, you give me a hundred if he doesn't. Would you take that risk? Would you risk $100 to win a million on the far odds that a 3rd party candidate can compete? The odds are so small, you wouldn't.
How do you really influence the election if you know you're one of thousands willing to vote for a candidate when his opponents are guarranteed millions of votes? Other than, as I said, thinking you're making a statement that nobody actually cares to hear nor will pay any mind to.

I don't have the time, energy, nor concern to participate in politics to the thousandth degree that many do so I often figured I'd be hindering the process by casting a vote based on campaign commercials and what I hear on the street. Little did I know that even with all that knowledge, these people were just writing in Curious George or Mickey Mouse and wasting their vote. Makes one wonder whether they're actually any smarter on the process than I am after all.

When you are a reliable straight ticket voter, and you vote a 3rd party candidate, like say a Bob Barr, who might get say 2% of the vote, you are sending your message...much the same way Nader did to Gore in 2000 and Perot did to Bush in '92. Your still saying you are a reliable voter but you are voting principle over party.
Right now I am undecided between McKennedy or Barr or write in. But I WILL vote to get Schaeffer in as well as vote other conservatives in, Ill vote to reelect Brian Green in as a judge up here probably won't vote for any of the other judges and will definitely vote AGAINST Stephen Groome as district judge, as well as that dipshlt DA. That guy is a real prlck that doesnt know his ass from a hole in the ground.
There are other reasons to go vote other than president, so just because I might write in Keyes or Arpaio doesn't mean I am wasting a trip to the voting booth. However, if the only reason you go to vote is for president and all you do is vote in snoopy then yeah, its stupid to even go vote.

I can't imagine how Barr can hope to fool too many libertarians into thinkingh otherwise (unless they are just too young to remember ol' Bob's past life as a republi-con and Clinton c*ck hunter.)

I watched some of the Libertarian Convention on CSPAN and Barr and his team pretty much hijacked it (easy to do apparently when it comes to third parties conventions). As a Harry Browne Libertarian, the whole thing made me sick to my stomach.

I'll probably vote Obama this time, though it doesn't matter much since I'm in Texas. however I at least feel that he represents some of my goals - enough to overlook the negatives.
I did not vote in 2004 since I contend that we did not have elections that year. What we had were 2 candidates with marginal differences running on the platform of which would be better to have a beer with. Issues did not enter into the discussion. You do not have elections when issues that the population cares about are not included.
