While aggressive evictions are making rent-stabilized apartments increasingly scarce in New York, Representative Charles B. Rangel is enjoying four of them, including three adjacent apartments in a sprawling penthouse overlooking Upper Manhattan, courtesy of one of New York’s premier real estate developers.

Mr. Rangel, the powerful Democrat who is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, uses his fourth apartment, six floors below, as a campaign office, despite state and city regulations that require rent-stabilized apartments to be used as a primary residence.

Mr. Rangel, who has a net worth of $566,000 to $1.2 million, according to Congressional disclosure records, paid a total rent of $3,894 monthly in 2007 for the four apartments at Lenox Terrace, a 1,700-unit, six-tower luxury development with doormen that is described in real estate publications as Harlem’s most prestigious address.

What a joke that our leaders pull this sort of thing. No wonder the democrats don't go after Bush like you all wanted so bad. It's because they are all so dirty and don't want any type of scrutiny on their own houses. After Bush is gone, we should clean house on the whole lot of Congress as well.

Ha ha ha!

You gotta be sh*ttin' me.

Compared to the conga line of GOP liars, crooks, and perverts we've witnessed over the past eight years, the Democrats are practically boy scouts (albeit spineless and ineffectual ones) by comparison.

Why do you think they are poised to take back the WH and increase their majorities in both houses when they really haven't done anything to deserve such victories?

You are like a person who is fixated on a shoplifter stealing a pack of chewing gum from the convenience store down the street while a bank robbery is taking place next door to your house.

So then you don't have a problem with this? Figures.

You and I generally agree on lots of things, LABF, but on this one I'm afraid that you're wrong in blowing it off. Corruption, abuse of privilege, and the entitlement "I deserve it" mentality is wrong no matter who does it. Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or other: they should all be called to account for their actions, proportionate to the deeds.

That, and vote all the bastards out.

m.

exactly how can you expect your party to clean up the other parties transgressions if you are busy ripping the public off. You do that and your more concerned with your own scam. If you have a scam going you won't raise too many flags about other peoples scams for fear of being exposes yourself.

I've voted for a lot of Democrats so I can complain about both parties IMO. This sort of profiteering has got to quit. It's not right for some dude whose worth a million dollars to be getting not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 rent controlled apts. How many apts does an 80 yr old man need anyways?

And like I said if you wanted your democrats to go after what you think were Bush's illegal actions then you better vote in democrats who aren't doing things like this because they won't want to bother. If you're in govt to rip off the public you could care less if Bush and the Repubs start a war. Hey as long as I get my rent controlled apt who the frack cares.

Well, let's see:

Chris Dodd gets sweetheart deals from Countrywide.
Harry Reid gets sweetheart land deals through scam fronts with his family members.
Dianne Feinstein chairs the committee that lines up defense contracts for her husband.
William Jefferson smuggles cash in his freezer.

I guess when Democrats talk about a "culture of corruption", they are, shall I say, extremely cultured themselves.

Democrats need to take this seriously. I am sure they won't which is a shame and cotniue to criticize Bush. As with foreign policy the most important thing is to be critical and take care of your own failures. After that then you are in a position to address the crimes of others.

The whole lot of them are bad apples. If I'm stealing, and your stealing, then we aren't going to call each other on it.

Do we need to pay these people more so there is less incentive to take kickbacks?

I'm not giving Rangel a pass, and I agree with what you're saying here.

I just can't help wanting to throw up when I see right-wingers who remained silent through all of Bush's high crimes and misdemeanors and who rarely spoke out against far more serious and egregious instances of corruption and criminality by their own party display their phony "righteous indignation" here (especially when the offense in question is penny-ante stuff compared to the GOP crimes and scandals of the last eight years.)

For LABF.:welcome:

The Republican scandals of the last eight years make anything Rangel or Reid have done look like child's play by comparison.

I'm not saying Rangel shouldn't be held to account - I'm just disgusted by the fact that the righties have remained silent and turned a blind eye to so many really serious crimes and scandals by Republicans these last eight years - yet they come out of the woodwork with their "righteous indignation" when a Democrat so much as spits on the sidewalk.

It's just hypocrisy, plain and simple.

It's just hypocrisy, plain and simple.

Damn right it is hypocrisy, Dems ran their entire platform on "Culture of Corruption"...and looky here they do the same ****.

Just goes to show that some politicians on both sides are corrupt.

Dems ran their entire platform on "Culture of Corruption"...

And they were right!

Why do you think the repubs lost the House and Senate?

Why do you think the Dems are poised to take back the WH and extend their majorities in both houses when they really haven't done anything of their own accord to deserve this?

and looky here they do the same ****.

Wrong.

It's not the "same."

This thing with Rangel is small potatoes - hardly even a blip on the radar - compared to the GOP crimes and scandals of the last eight years.

You're not really trying to compare this thing with Rangel to lying the country into war, outing a covert CIA agent for political payback, warrantless wiretaps, Katrina, molesting male pages, Jack Abramoff, Tom DeLay, etc., etc., are you?

Just goes to show that some politicians on both sides are corrupt.

It goes to show that politicians on the republican side are WAY more corrupt than their Democratic counterparts.

That's what the history of the last eight years will show.

No doubt the Repubs screwed the pooch, but they weren't right. They repeatedly stated that we needed a change in Washington because they was a "Culture of Corruption". Yet they can't stop their own corruption. Hmm.

I'm sure the Chinese sure appreciate the Clintons dont you think LABF? Corruption is Corruption. Period, you make it seem like it is ok and just a little nuisance if the Dems get caught red-handed. Both sides are guilty of Corruption and deserve punishment.

It goes to show that politicians on the republican side are WAY more corrupt than their Democratic counterparts.

That's what the history of the last eight years will show.

So in your view the Republicans are more corrupt...it makes it ok for Dems to be less corrupt.

Saying they "weren't right" just because you can point to some instance of wrongdoing (I'm not even sure this Rangel thing - while inexcusable - rises to the level of "corruption") on the part of some Democrat or other is not a valid argument.

Bottom line: It is a true statement that the GOP created a culture of corruption in Washington when they were in control.

It's also true that those people on this forum who are expressing their "outrage" over this thing with Rangel remained silent and looked the other way while the Republicans were committing much more serious and egregious crimes these past eight years - crimes that directly affected the welfare of the American people.

I'm sure the Chinese sure appreciate the Clintons dont you think LABF?

Huh?

Not sure what you're getting at there.

Are you referring to that discredited story about Clinton supposedly giving military secrets to the Chinese?

Both sides are guilty of Corruption and deserve punishment.

Anyone who is guilty deserves to be held accountable - regardless of party.

However, the republicans are guilty of far more serious offenses than the Dems.

You don't treat bank robbery or rape the same way you treat shoplifting or jaywalking.

So in your view the Republicans are more corrupt...it makes it ok for Dems to be less corrupt.

No - that would be a misrepresentation of my position.

If I were trying to defend Rangel's actions or excuse him, then you might have a point, but I'm not.

This whole discussion is making me flash back to the 90s when the GOP spent millions of our tax dollars on an independent investigation into a failed land deal in Arkansas...

...but, if you listen to most of the right-wingers on this board, we don't need an independent investigation when it comes to small change sh*t like 9/11, taking America to war on false pretenses, millions of dollars missing in Iraq, secret meetings between Cheney and Ken Lay, outing a covert CIA agent for political payback, Katrina, warrantless wiretaps, etc., etc.

Move along - nothing to see here.

The double standard is mind-boggling sometimes.

Anything to deflect attention from the mess their hero Dubya and their party have gotten us into.
