Sportsblogger KSK does a long takeout (http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/)of Stefan Fatsis' new book, and pulls out some juicy parts and some wild quotes from Jake, Shanny, and the lot. I'll go ahead and ignore fair use legalisms and just paste whole chunks of the thing:
Fatsis wrote his book after spending training camp with the Broncos as a place kicker and then covering the team through the 2006 season, a season that included Jake Plummer’s benching in favor of Jay Cutler, and Darrent Williams’ murder on the same day the 49ers knocked the Broncos out of the playoff hunt. Fatsis also did not take part in ANY contact drills. What a puss! Hey Fatsis, put a hat on and go hit someone, you timid little Greek bastard. I don’t care if you’re “too old”, or “too small” or “in possession of two reconstructed knees that could crumple any second”. NFL players routinely destroy their bodies purely for my enjoyment. I see no reason why you can’t do the same.
The most illuminating thing about the book is the fact that, by and large, most football players can’t stand their ****ing jobs. Oh, they like playing in games. But they only get to do that three hours a week. The rest of the week blows. The coaches are a-holes. The fans are a-holes. The media are a-holes. The pay isn’t really all that great if you’re just a practice squadder. You get hurt constantly. And chronically. And, when you do get hurt, you don’t get a card that everyone in the office signs like at my day job. You get fired.
There’s no job security unless you’re an All-Pro, and 99% of guys aren’t that. Most of the players can’t even figure out why they do it. They’re constantly being hired, then fired, then rehired, and the re-fired. Hundreds of guys are hired every year to bust ass through camp, despite management having no intention of keeping them when roster cuts come down. Your pay for going through camp? A few grand. Most of those guys never even earn the yearly minimum. Coaches constantly tell players their jobs are in jeopardy, yet refuse to clue them in as to where they stand. If your boss did this, you’d ****ing murder him.
In a way, it makes sense that NFL players are so jaded and cynical. Unlike most sports, football is the one sport where your time spent actually playing is but a mere fraction of the time you invest: lifting, practicing, going to boring as **** meetings, going to game “rehearsals” where you stand in formation 90 times over, etc. Compare that to baseball. Baseball players get to spend most of their time playing in REAL games. That’s fun. Football? Eh, not so much. You gotta sit through a whole lotta bull**** to get to Sunday.
You also come to learn a few other things from Fatsis’ book, like:
-Todd Sauerbrun is a total a-hole.
-I mean it. A real douche. But you probably already surmised that.
-Tight end Nate Jackson’s hip hop name is “Jack Nasty”
-Mike Shanahan can best be described as aloof, detached, insensitive, unemotional, manipulative, uncharismatic, controlling, uncommunicative, petty, and at times incompetent. And, of course, overly tan. But most players agree, he’s one of the BETTER coaches to play for.
-Jake Plummer’s a badass.
-Jason Elam is one of those Tebow-esque, Evangelical Christian overachievers who seems kinda cool to hang out with. Unless you’re gay. He might not like that.
There’s also no shortage of candid, profanity-laced quotes from people in the Broncos organization that, when extrapolated from the broader story, could be totally blown out of proportion by the media. So let’s go ahead and do that right now…
Jake Plummer: “Yeah, I missed some (offseason) workouts. And you know what? Mike Shanahan, you can kiss my ****ing ass for being pissed at that… I don’t want to be here every ****ing day in the offseason.”
Nate Jackson: “Half the guys out there **** up, basically, every single play.”
Ian Gold: “This is a business. When I’m here on this field, it is absolutely business. When I’m in the meeting rooms, it is business. Don’t hug me, don’t touch me, don’t call me your buddy, don’t tell me you love me, because I know you’ll mother**** me as soon as I leave the room.”
Mike Shanahan (after a bad practice): “Guys get their opportunity, they **** in their hat.”
Tom Nalen (to Fatsis after missing a kick that would have saved players 30 minutes of meeting time): “Thanks for ****ing us.”
Jake Plummer (to Pat Bowlen): “Hey, Mr. Bowlen, those are sweet boots. Where’d you get ‘em?”
Pat Bowlen (to Jake Plummer): “Aw, these are some ****in’ ostrich skin. You got to get yourself a pair of these, you little ****er.”
(NOTE: Bowlen will indeed become a new KSK kharakter. He’s like the Double-J’s brother.)
Jason Elam (regarding the theory of evolution): “You’ve got this goo man they want you to think we came from. It doesn’t make sense to me.” (Yeah, scientists! What’s with this half-assed goo man ****? There’s nothing in the New Testament about Swamp Thing!)
Ian Gold: “The hard part for me is dealing with a lack of loyalty, dealing with people who have such a lack of integrity that it’s just sickening… You have coaches that will smile in your face and they’ll **** on you the next second.”
Jake Plummer (to Mike Shanahan during a game): “Just call the plays. I’m going out there and playing ****ing football.”
Good stuff, Fatsis. You gave me a real glimpse inside the minds of NFL players. You got me to sympathize with them. Not enough to stop making fun of them, but a good amount nevertheless. I give your book a hefty FOUR THROWGASMS. I would have given you five, except that you say in the book that Matt Stover deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Pfft. Matt Stover can suck my balls.

A maverick that played hard but played when he wanted to. I suppose that is "bad ass" as it goes, but it doesn't make for a great QB. He was like the cool kid that was skipping class all the time.

I can't help but like Jake, if just for his maverick attitude. I mean, it wasn't great for Denver in the long run, especially since Jake could have probably actually been great if he had wanted to put forth the effort, but it makes for one hell of a cool guy. He's gone now, and we have our talented workaholic QB. Jake just kept the seat warm in exciting fashion.

I'll always appreciate Jake for that 13-3 season and for replacing Griese. We had some fun games with Jake and it was nice to finally have a QB that was fun to watch. His heart just wasn't in it enough to care and he finally petered out as his dedication early in the week went out the door.

Go back and watch the Griese years and remember how unlikable that guy was. It was great to have someone to root for again, someone with a little attitude.
The **** talking from this place drives me nuts sometimes. Jake was a warrior on sundays, and a great teammate. His flaw was that he didn't treat football like an obesssion. He's gone now, get over it.

I disagree. So he didn't shove his nose in the books everyday. He was still doing things with the team and for the team... only offensive player going to the weekly dinner with the defense.
...and things like that pay dividends... the team NEVER quit on Jake.

I agree with that. I think when Cutler was drafted Jake started to coast. He wasn't a fan of the out of game demands, and when he saw his replacement evident his efforts waned. A senior slack if you will. He was still fun to watch set Denver passing records, and then help guide the team to the AFC title game.
He also walked away when he decided it wasn't worth it anymore. I respect that personally.

I never disputed that. I was talking about honing his craft as a QB. He was a good leader and was his own man and his teammates respected that. I do think he lost the team his last year, though. You could tell there was doubt as his play declined. In football you lead with your play first and your off-field stuff second. If you don't have the former, they won't care what you think.

I disagree. That last year they still kept fighting for him every play. It wasn't until he was pulled and Jay got the reigns that this disturbing trend of flat out quitting in games started.
Hopefully that's over now.

That's about as fair as I've heard you be about the situation. Kudos for seeing both sides.
The only place I'll take exception is that I don't think his heart wasn't in it the whole time. I think he caved under Shanahan's pressure, just like Griese did. It took him longer because he had much more spine than Griese. But, if you believe all reports you hear about Shanahan, he's just not a player's coach. If you're not an elite talent, you can easily end up on his bad side and even if you ARE elite, you can still end up there. (See Shannon Sharpe.)
Jake busted his ass and utilized his very limited skills to fit the system well and Shanahan squeezed all he could out of him. But, when things got tough, Shanahan took his usual approach and Jake just caved under pressure and more likely just said **** it. If ever I've seen a guy just happily call it a career, it was Plummer and honestly, I can't blame him. Second best stats in Broncos history, a ton of wins... and people wanted to run him out of town almost the entire time he was there.
The bottom line is, it all worked out great. Jake had a good run in Denver (despite some people's inability to see it) .... and Shanahan got another elite QB prospect. I'll never quite understand why people are still so obsessed with bashing the guy at this stage. We've got our next great QB, it's time to move on... and.... oh, maybe address the defense that's been **** for a decade.

Oh I agree and I should have been more clear. I think the first three seasons he was totally into it. I think losing the AFCG, Tillman's death and finally drafting Cutler all kind of put him in "who cares?" mode. To that point he was as passionate and excited as you could hope.

I will say this about Shanahan (as a guy who has defended him for years).... his alienation tactics might backfire on him as much as they work out.
Certainly, there's a time for it... but I also wonder if he's a one trick pony in that regard. Someone like Parcells knew when to kick a player's ass and when to reel them in. Seems to me like Shanahan is in ass-kick mode 100% of the time, and if you're not a veteran, experienced, highly talented team leader... you're in the ****-house. I wonder if that hasn't worn thin around Broncos headquarters as the talent pool has thinned out.

I disagree. That last year they still kept fighting for him every play. It wasn't until he was pulled and Jay got the reigns that this disturbing trend of flat out quitting in games started.
Hopefully that's over now.
selective memory on your part.
San Diego Sunday Night Football game was a travesty of a loss. Team gave up in that game and i dont care what anyone says.

I just finished the book and it was brilliant. I wish we could discuss the 500 pages of more in depth details than we will EVER get about a Broncos season that just Jake (who is awesome I will admit...).

I'm looking into reading this book. I was excited to find out that as a broncos fan there was a broncos player living just 3 blocks from me only to find out it was Todd S. He was sigining autographs at our towns 4th of july party this year.

They'll merge it! Then you'll be sorry!!!

I just found it amusing that some apparently still can't get enough Plummer talk.
The QB is a hot-spot topic, period. You're not going to change that just because you happened to hate Plummer because he ran Griese out of town.

I'm still not sure what Griese offered in comparison to Plummer. Griese was a cold fish. Plummer played with fire.

Don't you ever get tired of making incorrect assumptions? ??? The fact is that I don't care a whit about either Plummer or Griese because neither is even remotely relevant to the Broncos (the rights to both of them being currently held by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I am not a Bucs fan, so I don't care). However, I don't think this means we necessarily need more than one thread on the main board devoted to discussing a former Bronco when there's really nothing new; everything's been hashed and rehashed endlessly already. If, for example, there was news that Plummer & his wife were expecting a baby, then yeah, a new thread is warranted. JMHO; YMMV.

A quick look at the topics on the main board would indicate that pretty much anything and everything is available to talk about. But I have yet to hear a valid reason why we need more than one current thread to rehash Jake Plummer on.

No offense, but until you start enough threads to fill the entire board and steer it in the direction you prefer it's just an annoyance to a) criticize a thread like this while you read/post in it and b)continue to do so while defending your actions.

That's defined as "spamming" and is grounds for a "vacation". tsk tsk Annoyances abound on any public messageboard. Furthermore, I've taken no actions that could even conceivably require any "defending"... forming and expressing an opinion is what every poster here does.
