Police: Former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel dies

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Police say former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel has died in a car accident.

Police Sgt. Alan Hayward says the 27-year-old Kiel was driving alone in a Chevy Sedan at about 10:15 Friday night in San Diego's upscale Scripps Ranch neighborhood when he hit a wall and was thrown from his car.

Hayward said Kiel was barely breathing when paramedics got to him and he died about an hour later.

Kiel played four years in the NFL from 2003-2006, all with the Chargers.

In February 2007 he pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping prescription cough syrup to Texas, the most significant of several scrapes with the law.

He was released by the team after his plea.

I'm surprised more people don't die driving around in huge SUV and trucks in the city at 80 mph. Big vehicles just not intended to be driven like sports cars but people insist on doing it here in calif. I'm just guessing that speed was a factor in this case but to lose control, hit a wall, you would think he was prob driving to fast.

Umm, the report says he was in a sedan not an SUV and mentioned nothing about speed.

Sorry to hear about his death. Prayers to his family and friends.

I would have expected him to die of an overdose.

Sad but not totally unexpected. He seemed like somebody who was just headed in the wrong direction.

Prayers go out to his family.

Sad to see it end this way.

Reminds me of former NBA player Eddie Griffith's death.

Well, the other problem is most (between the large vehicle and airbags, etc) get a false sense of security & feel they don't have to wear their seatbelt, hence his ejection from the vehicle. He probably could've walked (or stumbled) away from this if he buckled up...™

and the wrong way after people pleaded with him not to drive as he was ready to leave the party he attended.

sounds like that and alcohol/drugs were a decent factor in this also.

sorry I thought it said SUV my bad. Like I said though how often does someone have a single car accident when speed isn't a factor. Unless he was high or drunk then who knows.

By the way reports are he was driving fast going the wrong way on the road. Good thing he only killed himself what a friggin idiot. This player had bad news turd written all over him. This is not a surprising ending.

Because no matter the circumstances of a death, you must be upset about it and post how much of a tragedy it is and that your prayers go out to the family.

Follow protocol.

Unfortunately, I think gambling, drugs, and alcohol were a shadow that he couldn't escape from during his playing days and ultimately couldn't escape from at all. It's a shame the way that it played out because he was actually a down to earth guy to talk to and even though he couldn't cover a receiver to save his life, he was a beast in run support.

Yeah that PC protocol is a hard one for me to get. I still say I didn't say anything that bad it's just some people on this board have strange reactions.

How's this instead:

What a tragedy. In honor of this I propose we change the direction we drive down the roads.

They must be depressed a lot then. Either that or full of BS and only acting like they care because it's PC. Which do you guess?

I have no doubt you are a better driver then most of us but I do think 100 percent of us can at least go the right way.

Some people don't feel safe around trucks but I like to tail them you get better gas mileage. Don't get too close though or ya all get pissed.

So is it true I'm being pulled by you or is it all in my head? It sure feels like the trucks will pull you along.

no you are being pulled , it will save you fuel , but be damn careful , reason why we get pissed at tailgaters is , if I blow a tire , throw rubber , etc , we got a problem , your car will be damaged , and being pulled , it is harder for you to stop ....... 1 simple rule to remember being around big trucks ........ If you cant see me in my mirrors , I cant see you ..... I have no idea you are there , thats why I drive as if someone is always there , better safe then sorry ....

Breathing, anyway.

Yeah, some people die like heroes and other people die like jerks. I'd rather go out a hero. I've decided if I'm ever in a room where some gunman walks in and starts firing, like at Virginia Tech, I'm going to rush his ass. I may die getting to him, but I'd rather take that chance than cower up against a wall and be at his mercy. Better it be me than most of the people in the room anyway.

Wow that's some bravery right there. I think all of us probably have thought about what we would do in a life and death situation like that. Would you risk it all to save someone you didn't know? I like to think I would but really you can't answer that question until your faced with it.
