Report: Obama Camp Considering Football Stadium For Acceptance Speech

By Eric Kleefeld - July 3, 2008, 11:59PM
The Associated Press is reporting tonight that the Obama campaign is considering a novel idea for staging his acceptance speech at the convention: Don't actually give it at the convention, but at a much larger venue in Denver.

Instead of speaking at the Pepsi Center, which seats 21,000 people, in this scenario Obama would speak at Invesco Field, the site of the Denver Broncos games that holds 76,000 -- an astonishing number for a political gathering. Obama previously spoke to a similar-sized crowd in the run-up to the Oregon primary, and could almost certainly fill the stadium for his acceptance speech.

Franklin Roosevelt began the tradition of nominees directly addressing their conventions back in 1932, and it's been taken for granted ever since then. But the Obama camp's idea, if put into practice, would seriously outdo FDR.

Late Update: As commenters have noted, Invesco Field is not across town from the Pepsi Center, but is in fact right nearby.

Can you imagine the images of Obama accepting with the horse of the old Mile High in the background... What a great shot that would make!!!

I might have to fly a huge Eminent Domain Sucks banner on my building. You can see it clearly from the upper decks.

No way. If he bombs as a president, would you want Mile High to be connected with that?

He won't bomb as President. He'll look great following GWB. As a matter of fact, my ass sphincter would look good in comparison.

BTW, who owns the rights to Mile High? Bowlen, right? I know he's leans to the Right in a political sense. Could he put the kibosh on Obama speaking there?

Doubt it... Stan Kroenke could easily have done that as well w/ the pepsi center & the DNC convention...

But it would not seriously outdo JFK who gave his acceptance speech before an estimated 80,000 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1960.

I swear, everything Obama comes up with has been tried before. They just call it "change" and expect everyone to be bamboozled.

Yep.

The Bush family fortune was made by financing the Nazi war machine.

Prescott Bush's assets were seized by the U.S. government under the 'trading with the enemy act.'

Makes TexassBoob's post all the more ironic, eh?

I'll point out the obvious for the right wing extremists: Obama going to Invesco Field for an acceptance speech simply plays into his greatest asset: his oratory skills.

He's maxing out his strength, all good politicians do this.

McCain is better at the small venues, Obama is better at the big ones.

P.S. This is nothing like what Hitler did. Hitler consolidated his power, killed off his opponents, and beat the public into submission, so in essence, you had no choice. You either participated, or you were deported, or killed.

Of course. I'm just poking fun at the writer's belief that making a convention speech at a football stadium is somehow new and original. It's neither. Face it. The media are just bleating sheep around this guy.

How do you know how Obama is going to govern? He hasn't had to lead anyone yet. How do you know that, with a Democrat majority in Congress, dissenters won't be forced into concentration camps where they'll be forced to eat vegetarian and use only compact flourescent bulbs?

I'm not worried about that at all, that's why the Right has Rush.

j/k

Seriously though, I'm not worried about any elected leader in this country becoming a dictator, even with a sympathetic congress. Out nation is too fluid, too many voices to be heard, too many toes to step on.

That's the kind of feel-good move that would assure Obama of a post-convention bump. From an amateur political strategist point of view, that's brilliant...

Smart move for Obama, No way McCain tops this, his convention will be Bo-ring unless he gets Zell Miller as a speaker again...

Prescott Bush's assets were seized by the U.S. government under the 'trading with the enemy act.'

Not exactly correct, but you've never let the facts get in the way of your hatred of Bush.

Of course, pointing out your erroneous statements in no way supports, condones, or approves anything that Bush has done, or that his family has done.

(It's sad that I need to include the above disclaimer, but when LABF is involved, it's necessary to avoid the usual lies and bile directed at me).
