Its one of those movies that has a "twist" early on that just sends the whole thing spiraling into one big pile of dookie...its ok for the first half an hour..but as soon as the twist happens, you know its doomed

Agree on ID4. One hell of a movie (although admittedly, it was a movie with Will Smith, not a Will Smith movie)

The movie isn't as bad as some make it out to be. The twist puts it off, but it was still a good story line. I wish they would have went more in depth with the story though.

I love I Robot until the end scene. It became eye-rolling-ly bad for that final fight with the army of killer robots. Jeebus.
I'm still going to see Hancock. It's summer time.
Who else saw Wanted? That movie kicked ass. Loved it from start to finish.

Smith has done plenty of of good stuff. ID4, Pursuit of Happyness, Ali, A shark's tail, MIB, Hitch and Bad Boys were all great movies. I never saw the golfer one but that's a pretty decent list of flicks.
Bad boys 2, I am legend and I Robot were just average.
MIB2, Enemy of the State, Wild Wild West and now apparently Hancock are his duds. Not every movie works out. I would say considering his good against his bad or even average he's doing fine. For a black actor to have the kind of appeal he does is unheard of. He's also a good family man. I have no problem with Will Smith.

Enemy of the State, in my opinion, was a very good movie. I don't know if it was successful in the box office, but that was a damn good movie.
I do agree about MIB2, and I never saw all of Wild Wild West. It seemed silly.

Will Smith, black or otherwise, is probably the only bankable movie star left. The guy always gets a great payday. He's charming enough in this film, its just that the storyline is complete garbage...i actually got up to leave until i was reminded there was only 10 min left./

I didn't get into Enemy. It was like Seth Green and some dudes in a van being fooled by John Voight. There was no plot, either. It was like "ok it's over now! Silly government!"
WWW was better than people made it out to be, but it was still below average.

Will Smith is in some fun, some mediocre, and some crappy movies, but I've always felt he was extremely likable on and off camera. Unlike a lot of superstars out there, it seems like he's not faking his friendliness and doesn't take himself too seriously.

Not really. True, those are some bankable names, but not to the extent of Will Perhaps it's because some of the choices they make (indies, etc), but if you look at box office grosses for the actors above, and then compare em to Big Willy, there's a stark difference. And Daniel Day Lewis is fantastic, but he's not getting Jim Smith from rural mizz into the theater like a big willy july 4th tentpole does. Families don't really care so much for DDL, Clooney, Damon, Pitt. Big Willy's the king (but as said, perhaps its based on his choices)

Your criteria was "bankable", not "more bankable than Will Smith" (though I'd argue Hanks meets both criteria).
All of the names above are money in the bank each and every time they make a movie. There really isn't the stark difference in a few of them that you think. Hanks and Damon in particular have several movies with gross receipts on par with or above some of Will Smith's most successful movies.

....a pretty universal guy response. But his movies always make a ton of $ and he always has a ridiculously hot girlfriend at his side. When you've got guys like Tom Brady begging for your sloppy seconds, you're doing something right.

Hanks..see Three of his most recent. The Terminal (barely made its budget back, didnt open all that well (and that was a spielberg movie)! Charlie Wilsons War (didnt make its money back in box office receipts), Polar Express...opened poorly, wound up doing OK)
Damon: sure, he has the borne series, but look no further than the good shepard, brothers grimm, stuck on you (the last two were BOMBS). I wont count the Ocean's series because thats a power ensemble....he's had some stinkers at the box office! Check IMDB box office receipts if you dont believe.
then compare them with big willy....box office bonanza every time.

I never said he couldn't get tail. I said he sucks and he does. He still looks like he's sixteen and stupid Directors keep trying to force feed him to the public as a grown-up hero type and he never will be. There are plenty of other actors that are "pretty" looking that don't look like they're sixteen and can act better. Christian Bale and Brad Pitt come to mind. I like their work. Dicaprio's stinks.

<shrug> i like him. He's not my fav, but i usually find his performances engaging. But obviously all this stuff is completely subjective (so its almost silly to argue), which is why I HATE HATE HATE HATE the oscars. There's only one piece of empirical evidence that suggests a film was well-recieved (box office receipts..which obviously is never considered, nor should it be)...there is so much politicking involved in the oscar process, its sickening. I used to work for a producer who had amazing contacts in town. Studios would pay her insane amounts of money to hold "oscar parties" during voting season to butter up oscar voters to vote for their movies.

Will Smith is a bankable movie star. Out of the 18 movies he's appeared (not counting Hancock), 11 have made over $100 million. Out of the remaining 7, he merely made a cameo appearance in one (Jersey Girl).

Let's not ignore the Da Vinci Code. $757 million world wide. Better than anything Will Smith has done in the last 10 years.

Umm, not exactly. In the last 10 years, he's had at least 5 "non bonanzas" and some with minimal profits:
Bagger Vance (the dud of all duds)
Bad Boys II
Ali
Enemy of the State
Wild Wild West

Well, Da Vinci code probably would have made that regardless because of the extreme popularity of the novel. Sort of like Harry Potter.
Good point with Bagger, forgot about that one. Though my point wasnt to get into an argument about whether or not people are movie stars...it was suggesting that he's the number one star in the world right now. I should have made this more clear. For the most part, no one opens a movie like big willy...especially a summer tentpole

I don't get why Dicaprio is getting hate. I think he's a REALLY good actor. And when he has facial hair he can pass for almost 20 and a half.
But he freaking carried Departed when Nicholson decided he was going to put a stamp on it, and that movie won best picture.

I won't be happy with the oscars until its a 3 hour telecast of everyone in the audience patting themself on the back. And when their arms get tired, they can take a 15 minute break to compare bank accounts. Then back to back patting.
If they did this, i'd not only watch it, i'd tivo it because you'll never see a great display of the truth on television.
