View Full Version : Way Way Way OT: St. Thomas

Not sure if this thread will last... but I was looking on getting information about moving to St. Thomas.

I currently live in NYC and have lived in this area my entire life. I'm 26 with absolutely no attachments holding me back. I'm looking to move somewhere completely different but not in Europe. The Virgin Islands seem nice....as do places like Vermont or Maine.

Has anyone done this? Pros, cons?

I know I'll get some ridiculous answers, just make sure they are funny

And if this somehow turns into a Shanahan bashing thread, I'll quit the board

Why not Denver?

I have actually been thinking about Denver a bit....

Isn't rent high? If I was going to live in Colorado I would probably like ot be about 10 minutes from downtown....

What's mass transportation like?

I worked as a male whore in St. Thomas once. I had to leave after an incident involving a local politician, a cross-dressing panhandler, and an alpaca. That's a story for another day, though.

Good times.

That alpaca would have to be shaved all the time. Poor thing would roast in St. Thomas

Actually, the whole incident started with a shaving accident.

Don't just move to St. Thomas line a job up first. When you go to an island there is only so many jobs available.

You might want to also look into Costa Rica. There is a high amount of Americans that live there and there is no taxes. You can get a plot of land near the ocean, stick to the Pacific side, and open a restaurant/bar/alpaca whore house

If your just looking for adventure and a real change just get yourself a single wide trailer on 1 arrowhead drive. Of course you mentioned a lack of interest in STD's so that might not work so well.

How does STD's and Costa Rica go hand in had? Just curious as I was there on my Honeymoon and it seemed like a decent place in fact an awesome place.

There are some great little towns along the Amazon in Brazil. The ratio of hot women has to be the highest in the world. You could live like a king for 6 months with few grand. The fishing is outstanding. Get yourself a native gal, a grass hut, a small fishing boat and you'd be set. How's that for different?

Vance,
Your vocation might help this a little. Re you planning to work in a resort? Retail? Construction/development? Bartender? Male prostitute?

The Caribbean can be a fun place, but also expensive for groceries, and meals. If you are looking to get away and get paid, maybe you could apply for a job with a cruise line?

To me, the Caribbean is like New York. It's really fun when you have money, it sucks when you're poor.

If you are moving out of the US you also need to line up a work visa. They can be very difficult to get. If you don't get one the number of jobs you are able to get are well.... go check out a Home Depot parking lot. You can find out how the other side live.

My brother got married in St. John last year. We had to fly into St. Thomas then take a ferry from Red Hook over to Cruz Bay. I only spent a few hours in St. Thomas. Charlotte Amalie was too much of a filthy tourist town for my taste. St. John was a little more laid back and naturalistic. It was very hot and humid in late May.

If I were single and ready to start over I would do this:

Move to houston and buy the house Gene Kranz lived in back in the M/G/Apollo days. I would also get a crew cut and pretend I was a test pilot. I bet with all that going for me I would be beating the hot chicks off with a stick.

I like it. You'd need to get a pilot costume and change in/out of it in the 7-11 bathroom down the street on your way home from work each day. You'd be pimpin.

Honestly if I were in your situation I would move to Nicaragua. Here is my reasoning so hear me out. It is a much stable place now and many people who travle to Belize or Costa Rica or who want to buy down there are getting priced out. So now Nicaragua is becoming a hot market. Land is realitvely cheap and available.

So my dream is to start a business, always has been, and starting a resort has been. Yeah its a dream but you asked what I would do. So there you go.

you can even get your own island!

Go back to Med School and become an Internal Med guy, see a couple patients a day and nail $200k a year, and PARTY the rest of the time. You can make more if you see a lot of volume.

I was 22, 1 year out of collage and I hated the crap job that I had managed to scrounge. My best friend was moving to London and easily talked me into going with him. I sold my car (bought me 6 weeks to find a stable income) and jumped. Looking back it was one of the best experiences and decisions of my life. I partied balls, traveled Europe and meet my GF who is currently living with me (we are well on our way to the next step). Life only gets more complicated the longer you live. If you are in the position to do something like this find a way and make it happen.

I don't have much to contribute on Nicaragua but Costa Rica is awesome. My parents have a house there and love it. My dad made a funny comment one day (he is a big wind surfer). He meet a German guy who live 6 months in CR and the rest in Brazil. He rented wind surfers and made a decent living. Pops said had I known there were jobs like that available I would have never messed with the corporate world. Money is good but we are only on this ride once.

When I moved down here I worked at a dive shop as a scuba instructor. After 6 months of that I realized it wasn't that great, then I worked as an options trader for a hedge fund...they left the island after a year though. Now I work as the logistics manager for a multimillion dollar condo project on St John.

There is plenty of work here for everyone....if you want to bartend or wait tables, you can do that. Or if you have a college degree and what do do something more, there are plenty of opportunities for that too.

St Thomas is a beautiful place. Great nightlife!!! Check out http://www.virginislandsnightlife.com/st-thomas/ for some pics. The worst part about it here is it is a very small community, so everyone knows everyone elses business. So a word of advice...when man whoring, be discreet and stick to tourists!

Laid off from 2 gigs in a row as an art director, I took a shot and moved to Shanghai 4 years ago, first two years were rough as all hell. Last 2 years met my beautiful wife, and have the best job as a creative director, and make more money then I made back in NYC. Now, since everyone wants a piece of the action my old employers are asking me to come work for them again. It's a great feeling to be able to say 'thanks, but no thanks'

I say buy the Rosetta Stone software and take a Berlitz language course on Mandarin Chinese ... and then move to Shanghai or Hong Kong. You'll be a HUGE hit .... especally if you have skills.

In other words, GO EAST, YOUNG MAN!

But seriously, you don't give us much to go on. St. Thomas .... or Vermont?

What do you like to do for fun? What professions are you good at? Which do yo enjoy most? Is DirecTV available in St. Thomas? Do they hate whitey there?

Slade
06-28-2008, 06:46 AM
St. Thomas is paradise! Year round it is in the 80's, even at night. We do get a little rain, but the storms last about 15 minutes. Life hear revolves around the water. For fun, I go windsurfing, kiteboarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing (although there are not huge waves here), lobster diving, boating out to the British Virgin Islands, cliff jumping, spear fishing, marlin fishing, we have great nightlife here...it is like spring break here year round...thing girls gone wild, no joke!

The locals (West Indian) are not too found of white people, but fortunently enough, white people own just about everything here. There are plently of jobs too. My background is in economics and finance, and after 6 months here, I got my dream job of working at a Hedge Fund as an options trader. **** working on wall street! I got off at 3pm, and then I could be on the water!

The infrastructure here is the same as any major city in the US. We have DirecTV and wireless internet throughout St Thomas. I never miss a game...plus the waitresses at the sports bar in Red Hook are hot!! It took me a about half the season, but during our bye week I was doing a little more than watching football with one.

The cost of living is high...similar to New York or Miami, but for skilled labor, the wages are decent. When I was working at the hedge ow I am the logistics manager at a friend's condo development www.sirenusaresidences.com and I make about 70k. For unskilled labor, there are plenty of jobs doing odd things that start at about $10/hour, but if you could work as a server or a bartender, during the on season those people make alot more. It is common for them to make more than $300 a shift.

St. Thomas is more the place to live if you are single and want to have a lot of fun, St. John is more a honeymoon destination, and need to have a significant other to enjoy.

My advice would be if coming, try to come out here with a couple of friends. The hardest/worst part about it here are the people you meet would not be the people you would be friends with at home. It is hard to meet quality people here. But, Sprint and AT&T, considered this to be part of the US, so it is nothing extra to call the states. Personally I even keep my statesside number, so whatever provider my friends have, it wont be any extra for them to call me.

And if you need to go skiing, South American isnt too far away. If you crave a big city, take a quick flight to Miami. This pace is great, it is about 10 years behind the states, so there are TONS of opportunities to start businesses down here. For instance, they don't readily have Dr. Pepper here...you could ship it down here. Gas on St. Thomas is expensive, on St. Croix it is not, but instead of getting it from St. Croix, they get it from Puerto Rico. Why don't run a fuel barge to St. Croix weekly to get gas? There are tons of things here.

I could get into more detail about what parts of the island to live and exactly where one should work and party, but just PM me.

I wish it were that easy my friend. Ask the the other expats who 'ended' up being 'engrish' teachers

How does STD's and Costa Rica go hand in had? Just curious as I was there on my Honeymoon and it seemed like a decent place in fact an awesome place.

But you don't even mention whether you caught any STDs on your honeymoon. In my opinion, all the best honeymoons result in at least some herpes.

No kidding ... a reasonably intelligent America who speaks fluent Chinese is not welcomed there with open arms? I wouldda thought there would be tons of opportunites there ... aren't there American companies that need American know-how to plant their corporate footprint?

Yeah, of course. Best situation would be on a 'full ride' sent by your head office. But of course, those opportunities are few and far between, and becoming less and less. I meet a lot of engineers on a full expat package, especially german automotive experts. A lot of westerners are speaking fluent chinese these days, so hiring someone already in China is becoming the norm.

My joke about 'teaching engrish' can apply to a lot of expats. I also taught here for a while, but it was in my field of design. Luckily, teachers are more respected here, and the old saying ' those who cannot do, teach' doesnt really apply here like it does back home.

BTW - my chinese is good enough to get around and be social, but in no means could I conduct business in chinese. I'm lucky that I have a great staff, and we've found a way to communicate and run things quite efficiently. And in the end, I could always 'sketch' what i want done. ;D

Today sucks on St Thomas! It is 85, which it always is, but so windy today...about 20 mph. High winds limit what you do on on island. If I still windsurfed or kiteboarded it would be good, but since I don't really do them anymore, this sucks!!!

Hey, I went to St. Thomas on a long drunken weekend almost 15 years ago. I can remember taking the ferry over to Trunk Bay and snorkeling. Awesome beach.

Trunk Bay is a beautiful beach, so much so that a pic of it used to be in every Verizon phone, as the background pic "Tropical". It has an underwater snorkeling trail, that is pretty cool too. In general, St. John's beach's are nicer than St. Thomas cause 2/3rds of St. John is national park. It was donated by Rockafeller to the goverment.

just to give a little more background, i am in the process of starting a film production company with two of my buddies....one directs, the other handles most of our paperwork and contacts.....I'm the writer of the bunch

I've just been finding it very difficult to work full time in New York, get home after the bus and the subway and then sit down and write for a bit....by the time I walk in my door the only thing I want to do is eat and then go to sleep. It's just too stressful to throw the writing thing on top of it all.

I'm figuring if I can throw myself into a new situation where I don't know that many people and the lifestyle is different it could give me new perspective and hopefully more time to write.

If I don't make it, there would still be enough time for me to come back and re-enter the corporate world. I have an English degree and just graduated with an MBA in February, so I do have some schooling....the grind is just not what I want to do right now.
