What did the Lions know and when?

Linebacker Jordon Dizon was arrested in an alcohol-related incident April 20 in Boulder, Colo. The arrest occurred less than a week before the Detroit Lions selected him in the second round of the NFL draft, according to a report in Tuesday morning's edition of the Boulder Daily Camera.
A fair question: When did the Lions find out about the arrest? Before or after the draft?
Dizon has been hailed as a premier example of the kind of tough, high-character player that Lions coach Rod Marinelli wants to build around. He was one of Colorado's team captains last season, was a second-team member of the Big 12's all-academic team and is a candidate to start at middle linebacker for the Lions.
According to the police report, Dizon was cited for driving under the influence, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and failure to provide proof of insurance. His blood-alcohol level was .097, above the legal limit of .08.
Dizon has pleaded not guilty. His trial is set for Oct. 21.
One of two things happened here. Either the Lions decided the arrest -- and the potential ramifications under the NFL's personal conduct policy -- wasn't serious enough to remove Dizon from their draft board. Or, Detroit officials learned about it sometime between drafting him April 26 and a court appearance Monday by Dizon's attorney.
In many ways, the Lions would probably look better if the former scenario were the case. Assuming they vetted Dizon's character thoroughly before the draft, they would be in position to know whether the arrest was an aberration or a sign of future trouble.
If they simply didn't know ... well, we'll let Lions fans fill in the blank on that one.

Its pretty much a right of passage it seems for these guys to get popped for a DUI either before they are drafted or in their rookie season. Maybe the league needs to address this in rookie orientation a little more. That or strike home the seriousness through heavier fines/suspensions.

Well seeing as the legal limit is .08 then no they don't have to shut the f up. I am not condeming the kid as I would be a hypocrite as I made the same mistake back when I was in college. What I am saying is this is becoming and epidemic and the leagues should address it.
Oh and you sound so cavalier with your .097 remark. That is just under the old legal limit and pretty impaired.

Okay, I am definitely not one to defend drunk driving.
But...
The drunk driving laws are bass-ackwards. There's a big difference between the guy who breathes a .097 and the guy who is at .28 driving through a school zone.
This guy (http://www.sltrib.com/ci_9478904) is here in SLC - he finally had to go to jail after his NINTH DUI conviction. And get this - one of the earlier ones came from an accident he caused that killed a woman.
So, shame on Dizon for doing something seriously ill-advised. But let's keep it in perspective.

MAD has skewed the drunk driving laws so much that many arrests are worthless. .097 can be one beer, which doesn't reduce your response time. Anything below .10 is nothing more than obsurd laws being enforced to pad arrest statistics.
To condem this kid is silly, but I expect nothing less on this board.

A DUI is dumb, he should know better. But in all honesty I bet a majority of us have driven above the legal limit. Pete Coors got a DUI, how many congressmen have?
I know it is an incredibly stupid thing to do, I learned my lesson by a cop doing me a favor (though after talking to some friends it was probably because a DUI lock up is a pain in the ass). There are a hundred things he could have done, but didn't shame on him. Is it a charcter issue? Not really. There is no add on of resisting arrest, he wasn't in a fight, there was not 200lbs of weed in the trunk. Sounds like the buzzed driving is drunk driving scenario.
The NFL should make the penalty for a DUI much more intense as their players need to set a better example and driving drunk is dangerous.

2-3/hour. A single beer would give a man 155-175 pounds about .03 BAC. So Dizon probably had 4-5 beers depending on when he was caught, when he last drank, and when they made him blow.

Its not a simple as that. It depends on your metabolizm, how much you have to eat, body fat, time elapsed after drinking etc... and it hits each person differently.

Not necessarily. Got my own story here, so bear with me:
I was a freshman at CSU in Ft. Fun, CO and I did not know the town very well at all. Some friends and myself decided to go to Washington's Bar, and I was the designated driver.
So, the four of us head down to the ole watering hole, to tie one on, scope out the babes, get a feel for the area (consequentley, I got in with my brother's ID, which is a whole nother story, but it allowed me to have waaaay too much fun as an under 21 kid).
Anhoo, my friends are getting blasted, I'm kinda drinking, but not much. Just a beer here, a beer there, mixed in with water so as not to over do it. When we decide to leave, we get in my car, and I pull out of Washington's and I'm going the wrong way on a one way street.
I'm at an intersection and directly across the street comes johnny law. I don't even realize I'm on a one way, the light turns green, and I turn right on to the main down town street. Well, here comes the cop, lights a blazen.
I've got a car full of drunks, and I'm thinking, I'm screwed.
Well, the cop comes up, does the whole flashlight in the window thing, and then asks me for my ID and Insurance. I ask him why I was pulled over, and he explains that I was going the wrong way on a one way street. I explain my circumstances, that I'm new in town, and then I give him my real ID, of course. He goes back to his car, then comes back, hands me my stuff and says "have you been drinking tonight?" I say "No, but my friends have been drinking." He says, "I smell alcohol, can you need to get out of the car."
Well, this cop was kinda an azz. But, I'm very nice, very cooperative.
I say, "yes sir" and get out of the car.
Well, he gives me every sobriety test in the book. I mean, I could have tapped dance for that sum b****, and he still wouldn't have been happy. He held me there for damn near 45 minutes while I proceeded to walk every line in the damn book, and perform every test he could dream up.
But, I was cool, nice, respectful, gave the guy no problems.
Then, the azzhand writes me a ticket for "careless driving." CARELESS DRIVING!?!
I don't complain, I don't say anything. I just say "thank you officer." get in my car and drive away.
Then I take the ticket to the DA and she reduces it to driving down a one way, the wrong way, which is alot less than careless driving.

What he doesn't realize is I never did fail. I was not able to get into the academy last year for financial reasons and then when Florida passed amendment 1 it killed funding for the police departments, so bad that the local Sheriffs Office just laid off almost 45 people.
So obviously, none of the agencies I want to work for are hiring. Right now I am just playing the waiting game.
