LANDER -- Up to 20,000 people from throughout the United States will reportedly assemble at Big Sandy in the Wind River Mountains this summer for the annual "Rainbow Gathering of Living Light."
As local authorities gear up for the event, Cowboy State residents who witnessed a similar get-together 14 years ago said Wednesday that based upon that experience, there's little to worry about this summer.
When the Rainbow Family brought its congregation to Wyoming in 1994, it was something of a shock to the tiny town of Big Piney, as an estimated group of 14,000 free-spirited campers suddenly showed up, locals Lynda Leeper and Pam Hamilton said.

It is also, famously, a so-called alternative congregation featuring craft trading, dancing, drum circles, Eastern-style meditation and prayer, and where varying degrees of nudity and drug use are not uncommon.

At least the folks who take exception to this sort of gathering won't have to worry about this particular group commiting adultery with their sheep. ;)

This makes sense because Wyoming experienced a 10% population decline in the 80s. ;D

This is how the 06 Rainbow fest went down. The peaceful people decided to hurl rocks at law enforcement. http://www.steamboatpilot.com/news/2006/jun/20/tensions_run_high/
A couple of hippies were thrown in jail for dumpster diving also. I believe they served well over a month before the national media attention set it. I guess the good ole boys running the jail decided to let the stinky ones out after that.
Should be interesting when the rainbow people encounter local ranchers up there.

"Hello, ma'am. I'm working to clean up the neighborhood from parasites. Do you mind if I take a quick look around your house? I'm afraid you may have hippies."
"It's simple science. Look: When hippies start to nest in a new area, it draws other hippies in. With the right weather conditions and topography, it can lead to a music festival. One that lasts for days, even weeks. Reggae on the River, Woodstock, Burning Man, they will all pale in comparison to what we're looking at now. In my professional opinion... I think we're looking at a full-blown hippie jam festival the size of which we've never seen.

South Park dude, South Park.
And where is this "drak ally"? Sounds like something off of Star Trek.
Yes, I went there and called out your typos because a drak ally really deserves mention, I think you may be a Trekkie. The first step is admitting it, the next is to wash it off.
And yes, hippies suck.

Update!
Talked to a city official in Steamboat the other day. The rainbow festival in Colorado cost the taxpayers over $1,000,000 in cleanup, non payment at the hospitals, animal control, overtime etc. It was a mess. Spider might be time to round these guys up and send em on to California.

5 injured in Rainbow gathering melee
By staff and wire reports
Article Last Updated: 07/04/2008 04:38:19 PM MDT
About 400 members of the Rainbow Family threw rocks and sticks at 10 federal officers on Thursday night as they tried to arrest one member of the group at its annual gathering in western Wyoming, the U.S. Forest Service reported.
The agency said five members of the group were arrested and one officer was injured slightly.
At least 7,000 members of the Rainbow Family are camping this year on Forest Service land near Big Piney, in Sublette County. The group camps at a different place on federal lands each year around the Fourth of July holiday.
Rita Vollmer, spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service, issued a statement Friday morning saying that 10 Forest Service officers were patrolling the main meadow of the Rainbow Family's camping area on Thursday night. She said the officers apprehended one person described as being uncooperative.
As the ten officers were taking the two people out of the area, "about 400 Rainbows surrounded the squad trying to leave," according to the statement.
"More officers were requested to assist in the main meadow area. The mob began to advance, throwing sticks and rocks at the officers. Crowd control tactics were used to keep moving through the group of Rainbows."
Randall Kelton, who co-hosts an Austin, Texas, based radio show, says his colleague Deborah Stevens reported by satellite phone that federal officials had instigated the confrontation and that the crowd control tactics were extreme.
Stevens and Kelton host of "The Rule of Law" on the We The People Radio Network.
Rainbow members made similar complaints about the law enforcement at a gathering two years ago in the woods north of Steamboat Springs.
Law enforcement said they were not being provocative, but only maintaining public safety, law and order.
Neo-hippies have attended the "Rainbow Gathering of Living Light" on federal land each July since 1972 to stress non-violence, world peace and living in harmony with earth. This year's gathering was scheduled to end Friday.
Friday's events included the "Circle for Peace," where members father in a circle and pray for world peace, according to the event's website.
According to Friday's government statement, five people were arrested in Thursday's incident. One officer suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at a local hospital. A government vehicle also was damaged.
Attempts to reach Vollmer for information about the identity of those arrested and the charges against them weren't immediately successful on Friday.
Sgt. Stephen Townsend of the Wyoming Highway Patrol said state officers have issued some misdemeanor citations to members of the Rainbow Family charging them with possession of marijuana. He said two people were arrested this week on felony drug charges for allegedly possessing 96 hits of LSD.
Ben Neary of The Associated Press and Joey Bunch of the Denver Post contributed to this report.

I have been to Rainbow Gatherings and found the folks to be very respectful of nature with kitchens well planned and clean as well as clean toilet facilities. There was a lot of random screwing going on though.

Good job WY. Way to crack down. Colorado should have done the same years ago.
So it's OK for the government to take away people's right to peacefully enjoy our national wilderness areas but it's not OK when the government implements the law of "Right of Eminent Domain" when it involves your land.

Peacefully? You should inform yourself before posting. It makes you look stupid.
There was a small scale riot the other day.
Perhaps you'd like to set up the next rainbow festival near your wasteland next year? They can leave clothing, broken tents, human waste/toilet paper, beer cans, and broken down cars in your back yard. That's what they did in Colorado two years ago.
As far as the Eminent Domain comment goes Baja don't worry about me. I know you have your hands full hiding in Mexico and waiting for the end of the world.......

Ever see a clear cut forrest or an abandoned strip mine in our national forest?
"Our" forests can handle some TP and poop once a year. Those lands belong to all Americans not just the corporations. And in the future why not post your chicken shiit rep comments on the board when the relate to the post flow.
BTW this waste land you speak of has lots with a water view at a million a pop and water front starts at about 8 mill. - some waste land Mr. Informed Realtor.

Homeland Security continues its mission of criminalizing peace, as once again the Rainbow Family of Living Light (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Family) was attacked by a group of Federal National Forestry Agents organized and funded under the Patriot Act.
