Javon Walker was in the thoughts of many of his former Denver Broncos teammates this week after an incident where he got beaten up in Las Vegas.
At quarterback Jay Cutler's annual golf tournament on Wednesday, many of the players were concerned both about the condition of their friend and safety issues in general for professional athletes.
Walker, who now plays for the Oakland Raiders, left the hospital Wednesday after being robbed and beaten in Las Vegas. He was partying there late Sunday night and a few hours later he was found unconscious in the street.
Cutler took a break from golfing to wish his former teammate well.
"We never want to see a player like that get hurt. So we wish him the best of luck and hopefully he gets through it," he said.
Dre Bly, cornerback for the Broncos, spoke highly of Walker but said that he was simply "in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Broncos defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban gave some advice to Walker and to any football player that find themself in dangerous situations.
"I think it further puts more focus on us being targets and us being smart in where we go and things we do," he said.
Ekuban went on to warn his teammates to "just have eyes all around you and just be careful whatever you do."
Cutler also remembered his former teammate Darrent Williams who was shot in January 2007. He suggests that lessons can be learned from the dangerous situations that some of his friends have faced.
"Everyone knows who you are, and there are some people out there to hurt you. It's just the way things are," he said.
The Oakland Raiders expect that Walker will be ready to play by the start of training camp for the season.
