Denver rookie deal nixed
June 18, 2008 10:58 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson
The NFL disapproved the rookie contract signed by Denver seventh-round pick Josh Barrett, a safety from Arizona State. Denver announced his signing last week.
Barrett goes back to being unsigned property of the Broncos and the two sides have to come to a new agreement. Often, when these situations arise, it is because of language that is fairly easy to correct. It wouldn't be a surprise if the Broncos resolved this by the end of the week. Barrett was Denver's only signed draft pick.

The league has to approve all deals and there was something in this one they didn't like that both sides missed. As the article says, it was probably the language and not the nature of the contract itself.

First goof of the Goodman regime? ...or do we blame Xanders?
It's the offseason, we have to blame someone.

Or maybe this is the first sign of axe grinding for Shanahan standing up to Goodell on the Henry suspension last year.

Thats it! Brilliant reasoning! Rejecting this contract will show Shanahan and the Broncos.
It never ceases to amaze me the way peoples minds work here on the Mane.
ALL contracts go through the league office for approval. When a contract gets rejected...it doesn't mean there has to be ulterior motives or vendettas....it might just, maybe, possibly could mean that the league has done their job.

Yeah, it might mean that. Whats more amazing are those who are militant at the mere suggestion of any kind of backlash. It happens. To go around suggesting vendettas dont exist is more hysterical than being skeptical.

There might be backlash, but your idea that making them rework a seventh round pick's contract language is some kind of punishment is incredibly stupid.

Lex. If backlash WERE to happen....I think the league could come up with a better way to impact the Broncos then asking them and Josh to rework a rookie contract.
To take a business as usual event that results in something as simple as lawyers changing the language of the contract...and start assigning meaning to that event based on vendettas\conspiracy is just silly.
Maybe you should watch less made-for-TV movies.

I wouldnt rule out the league creating obstacles any way they can. Nor would I minimize the incentive(s) to do so. That would be folly.

I found the offending clause on an attorney website. I had no idea he held such a grudge from his senior year:
ARTICLE VI: SPECIFIC TERMS
Clause 1: TEAM agrees to take any and all reasonable measures
to ban the presence of one "Dennis Ericksen," his employees, agents,
heirs, successors and assigns, from all TEAM activities of any kind,
whether involving PLAYER or not. This ban shall extend, but is not
limited to, hotel, practice and game sites in the State of Arizona,
whenever TEAM visits that state.
I couldda told them this wouldn't fly. You can't contract for the behavior of a person that is not a party to the contract. I had no idea Josh was so bitter ... he has 2nd round talent, but was frusrated by Erickson's staff as a senior. Cost him alotta dough.

Not really. But I will say it makes more sense for the league to make problems on the small stuff because if they wait for something big to happen, they risk looking bad...and with the scrutiny that has surrounded spygate, the smaller stuff makes more sense. People already think that he favors some teams (namely New England) and to hold a bias against some teams on the bigger ticket items calls more attention to the already held belief that favoritism exists. So actually, the less conspicuous items make sense in spite of your meinung to the contrary. But circumstances aside, its folly to rule out anything where grudges exist...thats as a general rule.

I never said that there wouldn't be a backlash. Just because people think one incident is benign doesn't mean they rule out any possibility of that kind of behavior. I think given how the commissioner roles, if he really wanted to stick it to the Broncos he would do something that actually hurts them. Rejecting a seventh round rookie contract because of language issues only helps both the Broncos and the player because it prevents future legal problems.

Like I said, its less conspicuous and therefore less risky if he does this in aggregate.

Its nice that you think its instructional but one might also consider that teams know what kind of leeway exists with these sorts of things prior to it hitting the league office. And resultingly the language would fall in the scope of those parameters that are normally accepted by the league.

Ok Lex. You're right! This was a diabolical scheme by Goodell. He is the Count of Monte Cristo. Next he'll make sure the Styrofoam coffee cups are sent to the facility a day late to really start messing with our heads! His revenge is terrorizing the organization at every end.

No youre right. It makes perfect sense for the league to exact revenge on a big ticket item where there will more likely be maximum criticism for harboring a grudge.

You know what really pissed me off last year, and I thought there was a grudge thing going on... Marshall's little snow celebration. Getting penalized and fined for "using a prop." That in itself was ridiculous enough, then Brett Favre is all over the highlights in the playoffs, throwing snowballs at a teammate, everyone saying "Aw, look, he's like a kid again." No penalty. No fine. No consistency.
I'm all-out buying into NFL conspiracy against the Broncos now lex. Consider me your first convert. Damn them all to hell.

True story:
When I worked at Centennial Airport South of Denver we would get these letters from the same guy. They always accused the government of conducting experiements on him and his dogs testicles using a helicopter. He said everytime he saw the helicopter he would get a tingling in his nuts and his dog would start howling and licking his own pair.
I have never laughed so hard in my life. We looked up his address and he lived right next to I-225 and he probably saw the news choppers.

Meh, I disagree, personally. I know it was an unprecedented fine and all, but one of the Cowboy's coaches was taking HGH for erectile dysfunction and was heavily fined and SUSPENDED for getting a competitive edge in the sack.
Bill actually broke rules and the fine was hardly steep when you proportion it to his pay scale, and the draft pick penalty not severe when they landed ass first in the top ten anyways.

dude...you don't get it do you...I don't complain...I don't believe in conspiracy theories because they are thinly veiled whine sessions from puszies...I can take the lumps of the Broncos not being good without crying about how it must be the leagues fault...
and I certainly don't give a crap about a contract getting sent back to clean up some language...grudge!!...follly!!...poppycock!!

When have I blamed Denvers losses on conspiracies? I really dont see why you would bring that up. For someone who postures as you do, I would have expected you to know what a red herring is. I guess not.

so you're saying that you believe that the league has it out for the Broncos, but not to the extent that it affects their ability to win football games...
I'm not sure what to think about that...I'm caught between "wow," and "so what's the problem?"

But what do those of us on The Lex List win if we don't complain, or more shocking yet, there is nothing to complain about? See that's the problem with this little game, is that you can't lose, because even if we don't make a peep, we can't rub it in your face, because you will always find some evidence that you were right... even if it's some backwards grassy knoll conspiracy theory like a 7th round contract being sent back, or too many commercials during our Monday Night game.
Why not just come clean right now, and admit that you off-handedly said something kind of stupid, and didn't even really mean it, but now have backed yourself so far into a corner that your are forced to stubbornly defend an argument that, deep down, you do not even really believe to be the truth? Those of us on The Lex List won't think less of you for it, in fact we might respect you more.

The best part is, he feels the need to notify the airport...?
Yes he sent it in as a noise complaint. I made a copy of it before I left there. I have to dig around and see if I can find it then scan it and share.

Here's the amazing part: We don't know what it was sent back for. Maybe there WAS a blatant error. Maybe there was a minuscule one. We don't ****ing know.
Logic would dictate, therefore, that we cannot assess whether or not it WAS a vendetta-esque rejection, because we cannot ascertain whether or not the league's rejection was legitimate, or if it's in line with other such actions.
Logic would also dictate that all the arguing in this thread over whether it is or not is completely asinine.

Sheesh, guys ... get a life. It's undoubtedly a minor technicality. The freaking article said they'd probably have a new contract signed by the freaking end of the week.

Actually, Burger Bill just updated and said the language is "fixed." Barrett's coming back into town next week to sign it.
Now this conspiracy is interfering with Barrett's travel plans, and that's just wrong. What did he ever do to you, Goodell?

The Broncos said Thursday they have resolved their language issue with the contract of Josh Barrett. The contract for the seventh-round draft pick was disapproved by the NFL on Wednesday because of language in the contract. Barrett, a safety from Arizona State, is expected to sign when he returns to Denver on Monday.
In other Broncos rookie contract talks, Denver officials recently met with the agent of first-round pick Ryan Clady in Atlanta for preliminary talks. Still, the two sides don't feel any urgency and think there will be little problems striking a deal before training camp starts July 25.
Meanwhile, several Broncos players attended quarterback Jay Cutler's golf tournament in the Denver area over the course of the past two days.

It used to be Mike Draftbust-o-tan-a-han couldn't draft, and now he can't draft or sign his crappy draft picks. When is Bowlen going to wake up? Its obvious now the league has it in for him.
We are screwed until Pat cleans house.
Jesus effing Christ, butthurt much?
This is just a technicality that will get worked out, settle down.
