PARKER, Colo. -- After last week's Mike Shanahan Golf Classic, the Broncos had a chance to tee it up again Wednesday, this time for the Western Union Jay Cutler Celebrity Golf Classic at the Pinery Country Club, making this the second charity golf tournament in as many weeks.

This marked the second year the Jay Cutler Foundation has held its golf tournament, and as far as the Broncos quarterback is concerned, the event was a success.

"We started the foundation a couple years ago, and this is the second tournament," Cutler said. "It's going well. We had a good turn out."

Dre' Bly, Ebenezer Ekuban, Mike Leach, John Lynch, Brandon Marshall, Glenn Martinez, Erik Pears, Tony Scheffler and Rod Smith were just a few of the big names out on the course playing for charity. Each player teamed up with three sponsors or donors to create a foursome, and each group competed to win the tournament.

It wasn't just regular stroke play golf, however. The tournament was a scramble, playing best ball with mini-competitions along the way.

"They've got longest drive, closest to the pin and all kinds of stuff to make it interesting," Martinez said. "We're really consistent - we're not getting too many birdies or anything, but we're making par. But in a scramble like this, we need birdies to win."

"And it's best ball, but sometimes our best ball ain't the best one out there," said Martinez, laughing.

The players were all smiles as they made their way down the course, whether playing well or not. As it turns out, some of the Broncos can hold their own on the course while others spend most of their time in the rough. Leach and Bly provide the perfect examples.

Leach likely had the shot of the day on one par three hole when he hit the ball to within 12 feet of the pin while everyone else either left it short or sailed past.

"I started out a little slow, had a lot of pars, but we've made a few birdies in the last couple of holes," Leach said. "I play a decent amount. The one vice I have is I play a lot of golf."

Bly, however, will quickly state that his skills on the football field don't correlate with golf.

"I lost like 12 balls," the cornerback said. "I told my guys -- I warned them before I started playing."

Whether scoring birdies, pars, bogeys or worse, they all had fun, especially when it came to joking around with their teammates. Martinez made sure to point out that Marshall was by far the slowest golfer on the course, and Cutler went out of his way to drive ahead on the course just to heckle Lynch before attempting a putt.

"Oh yeah, we've been having a good time," Lynch said. "Jay has been heckling and hitting into us a little bit, but it's all in good fun for a good cause. It's fun to be out here."

At the end of the day, the Broncos were able to spend a few hours on the course to raise money for charity, most notably the charity Dedicated to Diabetes, which recently teamed up with the Jay Cutler Foundation. Cutler's foundation benefits underpriveleged children in Denver and throughout the nation, and after his recent diagnosis with Type 1 daibetes, the foundation will work hand-in-hand with Dedicated to Diabetes in an effort to raise money for diabetes awareness.

"We had a silent auction this morning, and we have a live auction this afternoon," Cutler said. "Hopefully we have some people with some deep pockets. We teamed up with Dedicated to Diabetes, and they jumped on board. It's just going really well."

"The support throughout Denver has been amazing."

It's great to see the player and the Broncos organization in the news for all the right reasons for a change...it's a breath of fresh air...and what more can you say about that fine young man Jay Cutler...

three things that i liked about that article.
1) Marshall was capable of playing golf and obviously is able to use his right hand.
2) Scheffler didn't have any problems planting on his foot to golf
3) Jay has the respect of veterans so much so that he was able to find Lynch on the course and heckle him without repurcussion
