Tuesday minicamp: Schedule changes ahead
by Lindsay Jones on June 10, 2008

DOVE VALLEY — Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has told players that this Thursday — yep, two days from now — will be their final day of team minicamp for the summer. The camp was originally scheduled to run through Friday, with another two-day camp scheduled for July 7-8.

We expect to hear more from Shanahan on Thursday about why he decided to cancel the final minicamp, but you’ve got to think he’s been pleased enough with what he’s seen so far to let players go for five weeks.

A few nuggets from Tuesday’s session:

- TE Tony Scheffler participated in practice but was very limited in what he did. He wore his No. 88 jersey and cleats, but he didn’t seem to do much differently Tuesday than he did when attending practice in regular workout gear last week. He did come out for a conditioning session with a team trainer about an hour after practice ended.

- While Scheffler held the play sheet and did the ever-popular “mental reps,” Nate Jackson had one of his best practices of late. He caught at least two nice balls in coverage, and talked some trash when he did it.

- Newly acquired defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson had his lower left leg and ankle heavily taped and didn’t play with the first-team defensive during 11-on-11 drills. Marcus Thomas took all of the reps in his place.

- Niko Koutouvides was back with the first team at middle linebacker. Nate Webster ran with the ones on Thursday and Friday.

- For the second straight practice, rookie Garrett Hartley took all the field goal reps. Matt Prater dressed for practice but did not kick. Shanahan said on Friday that Prater was tending to a sore groin.

- How many Broncos staffers does it take to scare away a prairie dog? Not one, not two, but three. A little guy had found himself a primo spot in the defensive secondary during passing drills, where he hung out for a few minutes until a herd of staffers chased him off into the bushes.

They are going to take it super easy on Robertson this offseason it seems. sheffler is worrying me a little. I am really interested in Niko, he could make a huge difference in the middle for this team

I was thinking the same thing. He seems to just be going out everyday and working and being a FOOTBALL PLAYER and not some flashy guy looking for attention.
Quiet and ready to work is the type of player this team needs and is looking like they are getting this season.

This means Thomas is'nt starting beside DeWayne, yes?

Damnit.

Bates and Shanny give the early reps to the vets, so most likely mckinley's getting the "starting reps" so far next to DeWayne, but I"m betting that most likely that he'll start next to him by the beginning of the season.

Sign them to a two-year contract for the league minimum. I bet those suckers are ferocious tacklers!

I don't think it means anything at this point. The roster is very fluid, and they sre still switching guys all over the place. By week 2 of TC, we will start to see the final roster.

You have now encapsulated the entire off season football discussion on this forum. It is a colossal bore, but there are only a few places where you get to see the sparkies, mullets and fades fans make arses of themselves bending over and taking one for the team.....

Good job!!!

The more I hear about Robertson being held out and "heavily taped", the more I feel like he won't have as big an impact as I had hoped.

he pretty much sucked last season. once he proves he can be a starter he should be able to compete for that job

I guess you didn't bother reading what part of his body was taped. It seems to have nothing to do with his knee.

Right. And thus I am worried. Last week his wrist was banged up as well.

The high altitude is turning him into a china doll.

Why would the media report on a punting battle? It's not like field position has anything to do with who wins football games. Instead, lets rehash the 2003 draft!

I see your point...nothing to worry about though. Nicks and bruises are part of the game, especially when you are getting back into it after a few months off. Now if he is sitting out of Pre-season games because of "nicks and bruises", then you may have a point. But considering the lack of ligaments has not sat this beast down, I doubt other less lingering problems will.

Yeah Shanny is just going to keep an extra WR or RB and give him a punters number just because league rules say he has to have a punter on the roster.
Shanny, Cutler, BMarsh, Stokely, Scheff, and the rest of the offense don't have any intention of a punter needing to be used this season

We have Prairie Dogs on the practice field?!?

I think we've found a nickname for our defense - the swarming prairie dogs. It fits from multiple perspectives: we've got prairie dogs coming out on the practice field; we played like a swarming band of prairie dogs last year; we played possum whenever things got tough last year. Tell me this isn't an inspired moniker!

I wonder if there's any way to find out if the prairie dog was rabid. Because that would really add to the nickname. I'm just saying.

The swarming, rabid prairie dogs.

Grrrr.

Everyone knows Robinson isn't going to practice much in camp and during the season. His knees can't afford to take the extra punishment.

No one is going to know whether he was a good pickup until the real games start.
