Heres a game I set up..lets see how everyone can do.
http://www.investopedia.com/

Game name: OM Trading
Password : Elway

Start with $100K
Start Date : 6/16/08
End Date :10/16/08

Everything is on the table..options, short, margin, etc.
They do have a diversification rule so you cant blow anymore than 10% on one trade to make it more realistic.

Is this open to everybody? Even those of us with no clue what we're doing?

Especially if you have no clue what you are doing. Right now the market is so jacked that you should be careful not to buy into the results one way or another. There are some hardened traders who are getting spanked right now but it comes back to the question. What would do with $100,000? Better than that wouldn't you like to see what somebody else does with $100,000?

Dude. Get in the game. It's fun.

How do I buy Tampax and water???

Suzie Orman says that if you rip up some old shirts and wrap them with duct tape that you can avoid that needless cost of Tampax. Suzie also says that if you use some chlorine tablets in one of those cheap water purifiers you can go for days. Use lemon juice to reduce the tang!

http://www.fool.com/FoolFAQ/FoolFAQ0033.htm

An investor who sells stock short borrows shares from a brokerage house and sells them to another buyer. Proceeds from the sale go into the shorter's account. He must buy those shares back (cover) at some point in time and return them to the lender.

Thus, if you sell short 1000 shares of Gardner's Gondolas at $20 a share, your account gets credited with $20,000. If the boats start sinking---since David Gardner, founder and CEO of VENI, knows nothing about their design---and the stock follows suit, tumbling to new lows, then you will start thinking about "covering" your short there for a very nice profit. Here's the record of transactions if the stock falls to $8.

Borrowed and Sold Short 1000 shares at $20: +$20,000

Bought back and returned 1000 shares at $8: -$8,000

Profit: + $12,000

But what happens if as the stock is falling, Tom Gardner, boatsmen extraordinaire, takes over the company at his brother's behest, and the holes and leaks are covered. As the stock begins to takes off, from $14 to $19 to $26 to $37, you finally decide that you'd better swallow hard and close out the transaction. You do so, buying back shares of TOMY (new ticker symbol) at $37.

Here's the record of transaction:

Borrowed and sold short 1000 shares at $20: +$20,000

Bought back and returned 1000 shares at $37: -$37,000

Loss: -$17,000

Ouch. So you see, in the second scenario, when I, your nemesis, took over the company, you lost $17,000...which you'll have to come up with. There's the danger....you have to be able to buy back the shares that you initially borrowed and sold. Whether the price is higher or lower, you're going to need to buy back the shares at some point in time.

They finally corrected it and tripled my shares today.

Oil spiked to another record high. The Dow fell below 11,000 for the first time in 2 years. Fannie and Freddie are going broke. I guess the fed will probably bail them out Monday after thinking about it all weekend. Like someone said earlier, this game may be a simulation of the beginning of the next great depression.

I'm gjbronco. My strategy was to buy energy stocks and short financials. Not a good strategy this week.

i wanna know how this works, i've read a bit on it, but still can't make much sense of it, thats why i'm playing this game is to learn a bit.

being short time like i've previously stated, i'm playing WAAAAY differently than i would with my own money cuz i'm just gambling on some really volatile stocks and been lucky to buy while they rise and short em as they go back down and then rebuy again...I've prolly made 30k off the lil dollar stock of RDN just buy playin its daily highs and lows

I think we can only buy and sell options in the game. We cant exercise nor write calls/puts

Buy a call: The buyer expects that the price may go up.
The buyer pays a premium that he will never get back.
He has the right to exercise the option at the strike price.

Buy a Put: A Buyer thinks price of a stock will decrease.
Pay a premium which buyer will never get back.
The buyer has the right to sell the stock
at strike price.

In the game if you get a run away stock, you gan get some astronomical gains in one day, but you can also lose your ass in one day also.

still not quite sure what the prices and numbers are tho

I shorted a stock that went up 108%. That's worse than buying a stock that goes bankrupt. You can only lose 100% that way.

ak1971

still not quite sure what the prices and numbers are tho

so the prices and numbers are all about the date, as options have time decay..ie..they expire, and lose value as they get closer to expiration.

This is a long call strategy.

Say a stock is going going up..you can buy a call which would give you the option of buying the stock at a certain price.

Said stock is at $7 and its going up. You could buy a $10 call which would enable you to buy the stock at $10. Now the stock gets to $15 you have the option to buy that stock at $10. Now the underlying option also has value, you can sell that option which gains in value as it gets into the money (the $10 strike price)

so if you wanted to do the above you would say buy a $10 September Call.
1 call option = 100 shares of the underlying stock.

This enables you to have the option (not obligation) to buy the stock at $10 and the Option expires in September. SO if it doesnt get into the money or you dont sell it, it expires worthless.

long puts are exactly the opposite for the down side

This is the simple explanation, as the game pretty much just lets us trade them as stocks and it is not possible to do some of the more complicated option trades. (which would be impossible to explain here)
