View Full Version : Bucs want 7 million from Plummer.

Been awhile but good ol' Jake is still in the news...

In Peyton Hillis, the Broncos got all the compensation they wanted for former quarterback Jake Plummer.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are another story. They want approximately $7 million in bonuses from Plummer in exchange for his retirement. Two NFL sources said the Bucs' grievance hearing against Plummer will commence in about two weeks.

Although the Broncos have officially joined the grievance, they are listed only to help eliminate any potential confusion — the bonus in dispute was derived from the restructured contract the Broncos gave Plummer in March 2005. But the only Bucs are seeking money from Plummer. The Broncos are not, having traded Plummer's contractual rights on March 3, 2007, in exchange for Tampa Bay's seventh-round draft selection in 2008.

With that pick, the Broncos took Hillis, a fullback who while at Arkansas blocked for future first-round tailbacks Darren McFadden and Felix Jones.

"I watched Jake Plummer play a lot when I was growing up," Hillis said. "He was a great quarterback. When I heard about what happened, getting traded for him, I was happy about it. But I have mostly put my focus on working as hard as I can to help the Denver Broncos."

Plummer had faxed a letter to the NFL office on March 2, 2007, stating his intention to retire. The next day, the Bucs acquired the rights to Plummer, anyway, hoping they could convince the 10-year quarterback to change his mind. But Plummer has stayed retired and has since married and lives in northern Idaho.

The Bucs argue Plummer's retirement meant he did not fulfill the contract they acquired from the Broncos. Precedence may be with the Bucs. When running back great Barry Sanders retired following the 1998 season, the Lions recouped $5.5 million of his $11 million signing bonus.

As to whether Tampa Bay deserves a refund on money it never paid, there is the Ricky Williams" case. The running back retired rather than to report to his new team, the Miami Dolphins in 2004. The Dolphins won an $8.6 million judgment.

Now that ol' Jakey has cost us the later draft pick ... who wants to wager he'll show up on Day 1 in Tampa? After all, we all know he hasn't (say it with me) "submitted his retirement papers yet."

I've heard of people saying money doesn't matter, but Jake is just being ridiculous.

I usually side with teams over players in situations like these, but in this case I hope Plummer gets to keep his money.

I didn't realise we got Hillis for Plummer. What a great trade! ^5

If I were him and banking my 10 year NFL retirement living in Idaho for basically nothing, having never really been shown any NFL love...I'd show up drunk over weight and carrying footage of my last season in Denver. I'd gladly pay 7 mil for him to not take another snap for the Broncos. But I could still be biased from my Elway euphoria still being in effect when he was taking our snaps.

All Jake has to do is show up at Tampa's facility to take a leak and walk out, he would keep the 7 million...

The Bucs should just leave the guy alone. They are just trying to get free money. I'd say this is somewhat different from the Barry Sanders situation.

I just thought of this, but if the Buccs knew all along that Plummer wasn't coming back(despite everything they said, maybe that was the case), could'nt it be said that we BOUGHT a 6th round pick for $7 Million?

Spot on. They took a risk with the trade and it didn't work out. To bad, these things happen.

No.

Denver does not have the type of management that would attempt to circumvent the cap or cheat the league...

Wait...wow....nice.

I was just going to post some pick of a tard laughing to show my sarcasm but when I typed "laughing my azz off" into google this was the 3rd hit.

They should have traded the rights to Plummer to me. I would go get my money, I would be like Tony Soprano.

Anyway, Plummer knows that he was going to have to give the money back. Hope he invested all of it, and made some money off of it at least. How many pairs of Birkenstocks does 7 million buy?

If you had told me six months ago that we'd get Peyton Hillis with the compensation for Jake Plummer I'd assume he reported before the draft.

So for me I honestly don't care when he reported, we got a guy who I think is going to be a long term starter on this club out of the pick, no matter when it was made.

It's not free money. It's money owed for services not rendered. Jake should have to pay.

1. Show up to Bucs camp
2. Throw nothing but left-handed passes
3. Get cut
4. Profit

That has to be the easiest way to make (or not lose, depending on your perspective) 7 million dollars. Just show up and suck.

The Bucs have had a revolving door of guys do just that for the past few years and they haven't cut them. That's probably what Plummer is afraid of.

The Buc's took the chance. Jake sent his letter BEFORE they chose to trade for him. They were 'hoping' to convince him to play. IMO, they made that choice knowing full well what his intentions were. Pretty stupid if you ask me. It's like getting into a relationship with someone and hoping they will change. :nono:

I dunno ... I'd call it more than "a chance." At this point, the way Gruden's collecting quarterbacks, the word "fetish" comes to mind. Sure, all he gave up was a mere 7th rounder for Jake, but it could've easily been a 4th rounder. Then he sent a 6th rounder to Chicago for Griese, despite the fact sunshine-Brian publicly warned them not to.

So then, going into the draft Gruden had Brian Griese, Jeff Garcia, Luke McCown, Bruce Gradkowski, Chris Simms, and the rights to Jake Plummer.

He's down a #6 and #7 pick, he'll have to make the most of his remaining picks, right? Nope ... 5th round choice Josh Johnson, a sub-200 pound QB from San Diego.

When I said free money, I was meaning that the Bucs did not pay him the bonus, but they are trying to collect.

By rule they are within their rights to go after that money... which they didn't pay him. I guess the way I, and some others view it, is that they are trying to jam the guy up. It was the Broncos that paid him the money, and then pretty much got rid of him. The Bucs aren't really losing much. What's the point of forcing him to show up there and play?

Really thinking about it, if the Broncos did not trade his rights, would they have gone after his bonus money after he retired?

Big deal if he has to pay up. With the tv contracts for Handball and his national rankings, he can make that up in a year easy. Let us face it. Handball has been popular at any given wall at all elementary schools. The Handball International Committee on Kids or HICKs will be putting out a 20 million dollar ad campaign on getting kids to continue the great game of Handball ,that brought us "popsies", "Chancies" and "Americans", will continue onto Junior and Senior High Schools to get the game chartered for lettering. Team Handball will soon be on NBC after Bowling and before AFL. No more ESPN OCHO for handball. This is going big time.

David Garrard, who I campaigned for us to sign as a free agent about 4 or 5 years ago now, when he instead re-upped with Jacksonville for peanuts.

We could have had him competing with Plummer after Jake's first season here and he probably would've taken Jake's job. While I'm as big a Cutler fan as the next OM poster its pretty hard to argue that Garrard + the picks (Ngata?) is better value than just Cutler. If we'd done that we could have had a couple more early '06 picks, and looking at our success in the later rounds of that draft I'd say our scouting department had that talent pool pretty well pegged, so we'd likely have done quite well for ourselves and netted some impact players.

So I'll be just be the honest one here, I hated Jake simply because he was not John Elway. Simple as that, looking back on it I was very critical of him and expected more than I could have gotten. He played well enough and did get ran out of town with hate. But he gets the last laugh with his ultra hot wife, and millions.

So it has taken me years to realize it and it was wrong. But I am sorry Mr. Plummer you were like the step dad the kids hated until they grew up and realized you did a great job and became their father, despite their ill founded hatred.
