HENRY, SHANAHAN ALTERCATION PRECEDED RELEASE?
Posted by Mike Florio on June 3, 2008, 7:09 a.m. EDT
Rumors are swirling that the seemingly abrupt decision of the Broncos to cut running back Travis Henry was ultimately prompted by an altercation of some kind involving Henry and coach Mike Shanahan.
Though we’re not hearing that Henry pulled a Latrell Sprewell on the Broncos’ head coach, or that the incident in any way turned physical, several sources have told us that there was some type of unpleasant exchange between the two at some point within the past few weeks.
Presumably, the Broncos waited to cut Henry until after they got Michael Pittman under contract. If Henry had been cut before Pittman was signed, Pittman’s leverage would have increased.
And so the end result is that Shanahan has wasted another $6.7 million of owner Pat Bowlen’s money. Despite the apparent fact that the decision didn’t arise from Henry’s football skills, the reality that the Broncos were forced to part ways with Henry due to his attitude and/or off-field conduct further proves that Shanahan simply isn’t a good judge of character when it comes to football players.
But he’s definitely a good coach, because as a coach he continues to generally achieve at a relatively high level despite having one hand tied behind his back via his generally poor decisions in free agency and the draft.
I posted this simply to get it out of the way. Sorry, WOLF LEX, and TELL-U-CRY. What a douche florio is.

Florio is just a little behind the times right now when it comes to understanding when Mr. Bowlen and Shanahan decided to clean house. Everything prior to this offseason is understood that there were some bad decisions made but that Bowlen and Shanahan are now cleaning house. How hard is it for Florio and company to understand this? Its not rocket science.

So he's reporting that some people have told him that Shanny and Henry may have had an altercation of some kind over the past 2 weeks? Top notch journalism, really. He has no idea what happened, nor is he even sure that it did, but some people have informed him that something may have, so we're supposed to take his word for it. What an assclown.

It wouldn't have even been a contest.
Shanahan would have flashed his gleaming pearly whites, blinding Travis. Then, he would hit him with a kidney shot, rabbit punch, round house, then kicked him in the babymaker.

Just a question, have you ever seen Pittman run?
I don't know what he has left in the tank but the dude can play. He's no world beater, but I think you will be impressed. He catches very well out of the backfield and takes off north and south. He doesn't juke, he hammers. When I watched him before, he never hesitated but ran straight for his hole. And he isn't slow, he does have some wheels.
If our O-line is doing well this year, you might be impressed with what Pittman brings to the table. I'm just sayin'...

I completely agree he isn't a starter, and won't be making regular highlights on ESPN. However, for vet minimum, I believe he can serve a good role for this young team. If he can pound out a few hard 3rd downs (ala Mike Anderson), and get four TD's (ala Travis Henry), then he has a place on the squad and can fulfill a role.
Many think he won't make the final roster, I think he does because of his experience, and his ability to protect Cutler.
Remember, our starting squad now has lots of talent, but little experience (except for Pittman). I think that alone gives him a solid shot at being on the field. We'll see in TC how far his skills have eroded.

Pittman may serve a purpose yet but it remains to be seen. On it's face, today, he looks to be a solid option for 3rd and 5. He can pick it up running, he can take it on a swing pass, he can offer some protection, he can do it on a screen. Depending on how our rooks come along in addition to Selvin (who also is a stunner when in space on a swing or screen) this may end up just fine. The more I hear people rave about Torain and the more I learn about him the more excited I am to see if he has the goods. I've been itching for a hammer back with 4.5 speed for awhile. Well...at least one that had some tread left on the tires when he came to our shop.

Bucs, isn't it (past) time to cut Pittman?
By GARY SHELTON
Published June 2, 2003
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the wake of violence, there are questions to be asked. In the aftermath of rage, there are answers to be sought.
In the matter of Michael Pittman, however, this is what you keep coming back to:
Why is this guy still a Buc?
Let everyone else unravel the details. Let the law worry about jail time, and let the league worry about suspension time. Let someone else sort through the excuses and the explanations. Around here, there is a simpler question:
Why is this guy still employed?
It has been hours now since news of the latest arrest of Pittman has reached the offices of One Buc Place. There has been plenty of time to release Pittman and launch the search for a replacement. Doesn't Jon Gruden get to work about 3:17 a.m.? Why then, did Pittman last past 3:30?
After all, this is Pittman's third strike. According to Phoenix police, an enraged Pittman rammed his Hummer into a Mercedes containing his wife, Melissa; his 2-year-old son, Mycah; and the family's 18-year-old babysitter. Pittman, who was arrested and charged in 2001 and in 1997 in domestic violence incidents, faces a possible six felony counts for Saturday's incident.
How many, exactly, are the Bucs waiting for?
How can any team tolerate this? How can it try to spin things to say that, hey, it's just waiting for due process and all? How can it assure its fans that when it talks about standards, it isn't just making noise.
Answer: This time, it can't.
The next few days are going to be crucial for the Bucs, a team that has dealt with its troubles this offseason by saying no comment until the questions went away. This time, people are watching.
If the Bucs don't release Pittman, what they're saying to their players is this: keep getting first downs, and we don't care what your legal problems are.
It is one thing to talk about how much you oppose domestic violence when it happens to another player on another team a thousand miles away, or when it is an untalented free agent who stands accused. The less it threatens a team, the easier it is to get to the high moral ground.
But when the player involved is the starting tailback, who is coming off a great game in a Super Bowl victory, who doesn't have a proven backup, is a team willing to stand for less?
We'll see.
It comes to this. A sports team has to stand for something grander than its won-loss record. It has to represent higher standards and greater goals. That's why so many fans have bonded with players such as Derrick Brooks, John Lynch and Ronde Barber over the years.
If an organization is going to say such players stand for it, however, it cannot stand for those who have a history of meltdowns such as Pittman's. You cannot bask in the glow of the good graces of some players and act as if the misdeeds of others have no affect.
When the Bucs signed Pittman last year, they swore they had done their background work, and they were comfortable in giving Pittman a chance. Ask yourself: After this, does Pittman deserve another one?
No, it wouldn't be easy to find another back in June, not even one as good as the exceedingly average Pittman. For most of last season, Pittman was a disappointment, an erect running back who lacked vision and instincts. One scout suggested that whenever he saw Pittman run the Mexican Hat Dance tune ran through his head.
Still, Pittman gained 124 yards in Super Bowl XXXVII, and there is no one else who looks like an every-down tailback on the roster. Not a lot of teams drafted running backs high this year, which means not a lot of teams are throwing backs away this June. The best names on the block appear to be Ron Dayne and Thomas Jones.
Certain things, however, are intolerable. The Bucs will manage with or without Pittman. Make a trade. Start Aaron Stecker. Unleash Travis Stephens. Something.
It's sad. Pittman is one of those players who makes you expect more of him. You see the swollen muscles and you want to believe he's a great back waiting to happen. You hear his soft voice and you want to believe him when he says prior police reports don't tell the true story of what happened.
So what happened this time, Mike? Did you bump fenders going for the same parking place? Were you trying to drum up business for the poor fellows at Maaco? What?
This is the third time Pittman has been arrested on domestic violence charges, however, and there was the 1994 report in college at Fresno State that he had a physical altercation with a woman, though no charges were filed. After a while, are we to believe that everyone else is making stuff up? That everyone is out to get Pittman?
Today, a lot of people are asking questions. That's our nature. We see an unreasonable act, and we want a reasonable explanation. We try to make sense out of a situation where none is available.
What leads a man to this kind of rage? How badly does someone have to lose it before he would ram his car into one that contained his wife and son? How afraid must his child have been? And how long before it all happens again?
Let other people find the answers. Let the law do what it should, and let the league do what it must.
For the Bucs, however, there is only one answer.
Cut him.

Domestic violence, assault charges dropped

MESA, Ariz. -- Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of endangerment following charges he used his Hummer to ram a car carrying his wife, 2-year-old son and a baby sitter.
In exchange for pleading guilty, charges of aggravated assault and aggravated domestic violence were dropped.
Under a plea agreement Pittman struck with prosecutors, he could be sentenced to a maximum of three years supervised probation and up to a year in jail. He also faces a maximum fine of $150,000.
Pittman, who refused comment as he left the courtroom, is scheduled to be sentenced April 23.
Pittman was indicted in June on two counts of aggravated assault for ramming his Hummer into a Mercedes carrying his wife, Melissa, his 2-year-old son, and baby sitter Kristina Hegland in May near Pittman's home in Phoenix.
No one was hurt, but the crash pushed the car over a median and tore one of the tires from its rim. Authorities said the cause involved a disagreement about taking the child to training camp.
Pittman was previously convicted of domestic violence in July 2001.
Because last year's crash fell within five years of Pittman's previous domestic violence convictions, prosecutors were able to file an additional charge of aggravated domestic violence, officials said.
After Thursday's hearing, Melissa Pittman's attorney Jason Lamm said she had "a bad taste in her mouth" about the prosecution.
Pittman played four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent in 2002.

So there's 4 DOCUMENTED instances for ya, Anubis. 1994 choking the girl at Fresno, then 3 more times of being arrested for domestic abuse. No, im not saying that. In fact i have to correct myself on one thing. I thought the Hummer incident was 2001 but it was actually 2003 and he pleaded down in 2004. But that incident seems to be the only thing on his criminal record. But again, this is 4 years ago. It would seem (at least right now) that he has kept himself out of trouble the last 4 years which i have no problem with. People make mistakes and looks like he had some real growing up to do. But its not like he is coming in with a lot of recent baggage like Henry was. You could probably find a lot of players who have some sort of baggage in their past. As a fan im only concerned how he is behaving in the here and now. I did some stupid things when i was young and im not the same person i was then so people can change. It was just reported on RMN.
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/jun/02/krieger-character-flaws-cost-henry/
While attending Fresno State in 1997, Pittman was arrested for allegedly holding a former girlfriend by the neck and slamming her face into a car seat, according to The Associated Press. He was sentenced to a batterer's treatment program and two years' probation.
In the summer of 2001, as a member of the Arizona Cardinals, he was again arrested on domestic violence charges, after which the Cardinals released him, according to the AP.
In May 2003, as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittman was arrested in Phoenix and charged with ramming his Hummer into his wife's Mercedes, which was carrying his wife, baby sitter and 2-year-old son at the time.
The St. Petersburg Times reported that Pittman's wife, Melissa, told investigators she was subjected to 30 or 40 incidents of domestic violence she never reported to police.
So cutting Travis Henry was not a statement about character so much as a choice between character flaws. It was Henry's bad luck that his character flaw - a con man's fixation on serving himself - happens to be a locker room liability, too.
Here you go: from another source http://www.sptimes.com/2003/06/02/Columns/Bucs__isn_t_it_past_t.shtml

No, his "domestic abuse" conviction was in 2001. Ramming your infant with a hummer is a-okay, and so is choking a woman and slamming her face into the car seat, lol. Those were busted down to lesser charges by plea bargaining.

It was just reported on RMN.
Here you go: from another source http://www.sptimes.com/2003/06/02/Columns/Bucs__isn_t_it_past_t.shtml
"This is the third time Pittman has been arrested on domestic violence charges, however, and there was the 1994 report in college at Fresno State that he had a physical altercation with a woman, though no charges were filed. After a while, are we to believe that everyone else is making stuff up? That everyone is out to get Pittman"
He said/She said. Sorry mate. If he is guilty than there should be a charge on his record. Do i actually believe he is innocent? No. But that was in the past and as stated by some people recently it sounds like the guy has changed himself the last 4 years and thats what you have to look at. Im more concerned with recent history.

You think they hand out 2 years of probation without a charge on his record? Have another one, dude.

Ok, lets scratch the whole charge on record. Ive only seen one listed this is why ive asked for links that show his criminal record and whats on it. The links you have given me claim that the charges were dropped. But, for arguements sake i will give in that they actually are there. The bottom line is those happened years ago. The most recent was 4 years ago. As ive stated, he isnt bringing any recent baggage to this team is what i and most likely the Broncos organization is more concerned about.

Let be honest, I think that NFL really turns a blind eye to domestic violence. And if a guy can help a team win, they aren't going to make a big deal about unless something literally becomes a public issue.

Im sure the NFL turns a blind eye to just about everything much like the rest of the sports nation does.

resumably, the Broncos waited to cut Henry until after they got Michael Pittman under contract.
We had to be 100% sure we had a talentless douche-bag to replace him before we made the move.
Nice work, Mike! You've learned your lesson... huh buddy!?

I've seen just about every Tampa Bay game in the past six years or so.
Pittman has the uncanny ability to not see the gaping hole right next to him and run right in the back of one of his o-lineman. At least once a game, he also seems to trip in the open field without a defender within ten yards of him. It's pretty amazing.
I think you just got Gerald Willhite mixed up with Pittman.

Forget Pitman. For that matter, Selvin better hope he has a great camp too. Every RB on this team better keep one eye on Ryan because he will sneak right in there and take the job away from everybody else. I'll call it right now, this guy WILL be the starter by regular season game #1. I watched him for years at ASU and he's got the toughness and passion to excel at this level. He was made for this offense. Don't believe me now, just wait and you will see later.

F__K Michael Pittman and anyone who's offering to give this scumbag another chance in Denver.
He can get all the chances he wants by openly and honestly working with the community and other groups to raise awareness and prevention of spousal abuse if he really has changed himself.
I just don't want him anywhere near my football team.

Pittman's camp fodder if Torrain/Young/Hall can't prove healthy. Signing Alexander would have carried an implicit guarantee of carries--with Pittman, if everyone else proves healhty--we can throw the bad seed into the weeds.
I think people are forgetting with Hillis you have Sapp back at HB. We just need redundancy until the young backs prove healthy. Here's betting Pittman's days as a Bronco don't last into September.

With Sapp (and Hills for that matter) both capable of HB duties, it will make it that much harder for Pittman or Mike Bell to make the team. Also, the Broncos are trying Spencer Larsen at FB which makes the group that much more intriguing. I would personally like to see the Broncos go with Young, Hall, Torain and Bell at HB and Hillis and Sapp at FB. I know Bell seems to be a dead man walking to most people, but I'd rather keep him than Pittman as I still believe Bell could provide some value in the long-run whereas Pittman is nothing more than a stop-gap backup.
