People need to remember this when they get all pissy about us drafting Torain in the fifth round. The Fade wasted their first rounder on a better version of Tatum Bell with a huge void in the middle of their defensive line and let the best player in the draft fall to their division rival. People gave their draft a "B" or better too. What a freaking joke they are.

McFadden is hardly a "better version of Tatum Bell". He's an incredible athlete, has great speed, and even better football instincts.
On almost any team he'll be a superstar. Just not in Oakland. I know several people (I attended undergrad at a Arkansas University) who have worked with him closely. His biggest issue is that he tends to take on the personality of those around him... an organization like the Raiders is not where he'll excel.

How does drafting a RB (Torain) instead of a DT/need(Okam) in the 5th round differ from drafting a RB(McFadden) instead of a DT/need (Dorsey)? We still have very serviceable RB's in Bell, Henry, Young and Hall and a VERY shallow pool of DT's that would have been improved by adding a big body from a top 20 CFB program in the 5th. I hope I am dead wrong but from the outside looking in, DT is still much more of a need than RB--and IMHO we made the same mistake in the 5th that the Fade made in the 1st--with the degree of risk being much higher for the Fade of course being their potential error occurred in the 1st round.

Okam is just not very good. That is why teams passed on him 5 or more times before he was drafted. He gets no push at all.
I would rather have an inconsistent player at a position of need than an injury prone luxury anytime
Okam appeared in 37 games (26 starts) in his first three seasons at Texas (2004-'06), recording 108 tackles (17 for losses) and five sacks. As a senior in 2007, he started all 13 games at strong-side defensive tackle and finished the season with 52 tackles (11 for losses), five sacks, a force fumble and five pass breakups. He missed one game in 2006 after suffering a right knee sprain, which required arthroscopic surgery that kept Okam out of 2007 spring drills. Okam flashes the mobility and power to dominate the interior but much like Michigan's Alan Branch, whose stock plummeted leading up to the 2007 draft, Okam's motor is far too inconsistent and he's having problems keeping his weight down. With that in mind, Okam projects as a late fourth or early fifth round pick.
Torain began his career at Butler CC, where he spent two years (2004-05) and ran for 800-plus yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore, despite missing four games. In 2006, he played in 13 games (eight starts) and finished with 1,229 yards and seven touchdowns on 223 carries (5.5 average). In six games as a senior, he ran for 553 yards and five TDs on 110 carries (5.0 average) before being knocked out of the Sun Devils' final seven games by ankle, knee and foot injuries. In two years at Tempe, Torain also had 25 receptions for 305 yards (11.4 average) and five touchdowns. Torain is an efficient between-the-tacklers runner and a reliable receiver out of the backfield but he isn't as physical as his size would suggest, he isn't much of a big-play threat and he's coming off a season-ending foot injury. He projects as a seventh round pick or rookie free agent consequently--does anyone think he would be drafted?

TD had a similar injury history without the pure physical talent evident in Torain. We drafted him in the 6th. That worked out ok for us. We will have to wait and see what he does.

You do realize we took a DT with our other 5th rounder, right? It might not have been the specific guy you wanted, but obviously the rest of the league didn't think much more of Okam than they did Powell. There's also the even more obvious difference of the Raiders making this move with a top 5 pick versus us doing it in the freakin' 5th round. You can't seriously think the two situations are analogous?

Are you joking? You're talking about fifth round picks to top five picks. There's a huge difference. What if we traded up and drafted McFadden? Then how would you feel? Torain will have more immediate impact on this team than Okam will on Houston. Okam is a fat lazy turd.

Again, we took a DT with our very next 5th rounder. It might not be the specific guy you wanted, but at that point in the draft you can hardly consider it a bad move. Plus, Okam for all his talent is lazy and I'd rather put my stock in an overachiever like Powell who will bring it every play. Not as much upside there but I'd say he has a better chance to stick and contribute than someone who doesn't like to work.

It might be. So might kick returner. However it would appear that our FO stuck to their board and took the best value that coincided with our need at each selection. Looking back on the draft as a whole, its clear this was a draft for value rather than need and that's how it should be. You start reaching for need when there are better players at other positions at your spot then it comes back to bite you. I feel good about this draft.

Exactly. No more "potential" guys with bad attitudes. An average athlete is worth double what the superman who is lazy is worth. High character, lunch-pail guys who play unselfishly is what we got and it's what this team has needed for a long time.

Adding to the value draft philosophy, this is the first year in awhile we did not draft multiple players at the same position. Another change in philosophy, helps give us some semblance of continuity, maybe, sort of...
One solid veteran FA and one football nerd drafted with a history of stoning B Albert at the DT position. I LIKE it.

It's more than just numbers. There is nothing similar about the two players at all. It's like me saying "McFadden is the second coming of Amos Zereoue." Both play RB, but aside from that there is pretty much nothing in common but I guess details aren't as important when a person doesn't know what they are talking about.

Kiffen is destined to repeat Shanahan's manuever out of Oaktown.
On another note, Oakland must be keeping 2 sets of books [gangland style (!)] because they just dropped 6M on Fargas in the middle of Feb. (with a possibiity of 14M payoff this year). Note this funny group of sentences (linked)http://www.mercurynews.com/raiders/ci_8258590?nclick_check=1
"Fargas rushed for 179 yards that game and 917 in an 11-game span before sustaining a season-ending right-knee injury. Jordan was relegated to spot duty the rest of the way, even when he was healthy enough to play.
Re-signing Fargas makes it more likely that the Raiders will cut Jordan. The move also makes it less likely that the Raiders will bring back running back Dominic Rhodes for a second year and all but rules out using their first-round draft pick on Arkansas running back Darren McFadden."
So, you have to smile at two things:
1) Raiders needs defense but passed that up to get the best RB on the board, while.....
2) ...overpaying HUGE money for a backup RB that had a season-ending knee injury.
How stupid does your owner have to be before the raider nation stages a coup?

Come on Maximus all smack aside. With Warren Sapp retired and Gerard Warren on your team do you really think McFadden was the best choice?
Seriously you guys had a stout Defense but now your line is questionable and your team passed on Dorsey.
All smack aside... I agree with you. We should have grabbed dorsey. On the other hand we should have grabbed Peterson last year. That's all in the past now. McFadden will make our offense much harder to defend and of course we will have to learn how to stop teams from running on us.

Do you have any idea how much opportunity Al Davis has whiffed on while Oakland has been the resident bottomfeeder in the NFL? Denver hasn't even sniffed a top 10 pick in over a decade and Oakland has lived there.

I understand you dont like the guy but as it would suggest from your profile you are from ny have you not seen his consistant year in year out numbers? to compair him to Sam Adams is just plain ignorant. I can only hope this was a sad attempt at a joke.
The Jets may receive nothing from the Dewayne Robertson trade with the Broncos.
Robertson flunked the Broncos' physical, but the team decided he was worth the risk. If Robertson plays in less than 65 percent of the defensive plays in 2008, the Jets will not receive a 2009 pick. They will get a third-rounder if he does make 65 percent, but the Broncos eight-man rotation and Robertson's balky knee make that scenario unlikely.

Just as well that the donks don't get a top 10 pick... shanarat would blow it anyway! Take a look at all the drafts since he's been scapegoating... not a high percentage make the team or the nfl... should we talk about Draft class middlebust?

This pattern of being one year late in jokeland is awesome.
Ignored Cutler, get Russell one year later.
Forced to ignore Peterson, get McFadden one year later.
Ignored Dorsery, must guarantee they will select the BA DT in the top 10 next year. LMFAO
jokeland could have had a team lead by Cutler, Moss, Peterson, and Dorsey. Best part, their fans put up with the BS? Why Maximus? Why RR? If its just an excuse to wear halloween costumes once a week, dont worry, no one will look at you any differently if you wear them during your normal daily lives.

Exactly. No more "potential" guys with bad attitudes. An average athlete is worth double what the superman who is lazy is worth. High character, lunch-pail guys who play unselfishly is what we got and it's what this team has needed for a long time.
I hope they draft exactly the same way next year. It was a good move.

I can always tell you Donk fans are worried when the hottest thread on the board in April is a Raider Thread...
Oh don't worry .... The ass beatings will continue soon
Stop refrenceing you time in prison ass beatings are only acceptable in porn or behind close doors out here in the free world. And as far as the Faid beating us this year you have to be kidding your team right now couldnt beat the college team playing in your old stadium. You just gotta love the offseason everyone is a champion.

All smack aside... I agree with you. We should have grabbed dorsey.
No way, Maximus. (warning: BroncoFanz may want to skip this rant). DT is definately a team need, but it ain't the #1 team need. We spent the #1 pick on Jamarcus & the #1 team need is to make him a success. Our future is riding on the success of our #1 franchise QB. We have so many resources tied up in the guy, as he goes, so goes the team.
McFadden can take a lot of heat of the kid in his probable struggles dealing with his first full year. The more teams have to focus on stopping DMAC, the better it will be for Jamarcus. They are 20 & 22 years old respectively & should be together a long time.
We can get a DT (albeit a lesser one) with another pick next year. This year's 2nd round pick went for DeAngelo Hall. Our third-round pick is Mario Henderson. Our fifth-round pick is DT Gerard Warren & we just paid a pile 'o cash for DTs Terdell Sands & Tommy Kelly.
Most QBs struggle in their first full NFL year & I figure its more important to grab a top-talent weapon to pair up with our franchise QB to take some heat off the guy. We had way more dough tied up in DTs than we did in RBs when this draft came down.
DMAC was the right move to make under the circumstances. Unless, of course, he doesn't do shiet against NFL defenses and Jamarcus is a bust....

Dominic Rhodes lets loose on Sirius after being released, and Warren Sapp has a few nuggets to add about LaMont Jordan, too.
Damn, I love these days. We can bitch and moan about the Broncos all day long, but it just seems so right to laugh at the faiders.
