I'm going with Sam Baker at #21 to the Atlanta Falcons, who else do you guys see as a big reach for a round 1 selection?

I'd say same position but different player. Duane Brown OT at 26 to the Texans.

Chris Johnson.

There was a handful of reaches at the end of the 1st round there. Duane Brown is a good one. Sam Baker probably would have been a late first rounder if it wasn't for some of his injuries this year.

Chris Johnson to the Titans. They got Chris Henry in the 2nd last year. This year, they took the same player in the 1st. This is just stupid. Still no receivers for Young. Give the kid a chance.

Brown to Houston. Not necessarily a bad pick, but certainly a reach.

Agreed
Brown to Houston.
As for the reach that cost the reaching team the most, Jacksonville giving up two thirds to jump 18 spots and get Harvey. Probably could've had him in the early to mid teens, and a bunch of very good speed rushers went in the early to mid-2nd (they took one of them in fact).

Our own bpc called this a week ago. Not the team, but he said "I almost guarantee Duane Brown will sneak into the first round." I thought...WHO? I almost posted that he was out of his freaking gord! Glad I kept my mouth shut now! ;D Good call Chris!
Also, I'll be the first to admit that I don't know jack about the OL. Is Clady really the best fit? I thought he was the 2nd best and was rated the 2nd best by many. But lately I've heard that both Albert and Williams were ahead of him. bpc, Khan, somebody... explain to the masses! Thanks!

Cincy would have taken Harvey. But I agree it was a reach in the first. But then they made up for it (in a very big way) getting Groves in the back half of the 2nd. Groves and Harvey is a much MUCH better haul than we had last year in Moss and Crowder. Groves should have been in the 1st IMO. He's a better prospect than Mark Anderson. They did well to get him so late.
I kind of figured Chris Johnson would sneak into the first. I think the Titans will use him as a receiver quite a bit as well. Not a good fit though. Young needs bigger receivers to help... Chris Johnson, while not little is not in the 6'3 category they need. Would have made sense for them to trade down a bit and go after a Kelly/Hester/Sweed.

Chris Johnson. I think Tennessee could have found the same player further down. Brown would have been my second.
As far as a bad pick I think it's Atlanta's with Matt Ryan. With the defensive players on the board at that point they could have gotten a QB later, possibly with Henne. I don't think there is much difference with the QB's taken, although I question Baltimore taking Flacco. Kyle Boller the 2nd? Glad we didn't need one this year.

I went to Delaware so even if some feel Joe Flacco was a 1st-round reach (only Delaware player to ever be taken higher than the 4th round!), we're pretty happy...

Without question it's the Duane Brown pick for the Texans...
they would've gotten a lot more value picking Mendenhalll...
i thought for sure they'd pick him but then again i should've known better...kubiak is a shanny clone and shanny doesn't take RBs in the 1st round...

I thought Derrick Harvey was interesting... a bit of a reach at 8 and Jags gave up four picks.

It's hard to argue with this. The move looked like a dyed-in-the-wool panic move. There was a run on offensive tackles and people freaked out. Baker was a reach too.

Brown was a good pick, a bit early. The Bucs had the biggest reach in the first.

Ryan Clady by far, we could've waited til #42 & got him.

It's not Chris Johnson. That guy was drafted in the 2nd half of the 1st round and looks liike the second coming of Reggie Bush. I"ll go with Sam Baker, who could probably have been had 15 picks later and is considered soft by some NFL scouts. I'm not sure Derrick Harvey was worth his spot either and Flacco...a QB from Deleware? Question that one too.

the jags trading a bounty for Harvey.
He was not worthy of a Top 10 selection and now they will be paying him big time $$$ he is not worthy of.

Cause the original is just knocking the NFL off it's feet...
I think Houston's move was softened by the fact that they traded back before doing it. Trading back and taking Duane Brown seems like a better move than trading up for Sam Baker.

I would put the Flacco pick right up there with these orhter moves but Duane Brown was a guy singled out by the ol coach Gibbs specifically for the zone blocking system. I dont see why they wouldnt have moved to the front of the second and still picked him though.

At least the Texans traded DOWN and took Duane Brown while Harvey, Baker and Flacco were all from trading UP, meaning those teams didn't just reach for the player but those teams gave up draft picks for the privilege of reaching.
As for Mendenhall, let's put the entire deal in perspective.
Is Mendenhall better than drafting Duane Brown, Steve Slaton and Dominique Barber? Given how badly the Texans need to replace Ephraim Salaam, they still got the same guy they would have taken at 18 and got a useful third-down back and a prospect at safety with NFL bloodlines by trading down.

The Texans said they turned down a second trade-down offer from 26 because Gibbs had earmarked three LT candidates he thought Houston should take and Brown was the last of the three.

The Rams taking Avery at the top of the 2nd round sure seems like a reach big enough to throw anybody's back out. If he doesn't turn out to be a stud they will be remembered much like the Titans in taking Kevin Dyson over Randy Moss. :oyvey:

Flacco, IMO... I think he's going to be a bust.
Sure the Jags gave up a lot for Harvey but he'll have a better career than Moss
I'd understand the Chris Johnson choice as the worst pick if he wasn't playing with Young.... All that speed and athleticism could be difficult to match up with

Guess who #1 was.
#1 was Williams and #2 was Clady accoring to John McClain's blog in the Houston Chronicle. #3 was Brown.
Interesting, too, that the Texans brought them all in before the draft and asked them how they felt about cut-blocking. Brown said he had no problem with it.
With Gibbs there, expect the Texans to cut-block a lot more than they have in the past.
