View Full Version : Should I start buying rice?

I don't really eat it, but now that there is a run on rice I feel oddly compelled to hoard. Sure people may be starving in other places, but hell what about Chinese and Japanese restaurants out here? What are they going to do? If we want to keep this country great we must keep our Rice Superiority! We cannot afford to lose our place in the world!

Its actually a real problem. Due to the climate change (and this fascination with corn ethanol), rice is not nearly as plentiful as it once was. Even Costco and Sam's club will only let you buy something like one bag a week. Also, by this summer, there will be no more rye bread made in america apparently...it will all be imported. This food crisis is kind of a big deal and people should take note of it.

It was on the news last night around here. They are limiting people to 4-20 pound bags per visit......they didn't limit the number of visits you could make in a week though. Like they could track it if you paid in cash anyway and simply hopped from register to register. Most of them are self-checkout now anyway, so they couldn't even stop you if they wanted to. What a useless policy.

If it was enforceable, though, look out! I just don't know what I'd do if I couldn't get more than 80 pounds of rice at a time.

If your "card" tracks you, they could enforce it.

The exact quote from them is:

Sam's Club said it will limit customers to four bags at a time of imported jasmine, basmati and long grain white rice.

The idiots forgot to define what "at a time" means. There's nothing there that says you couldn't just go out to your car, unload, and go back in....and call that "another time".

They really need some lawyers to review their press releases before they go public. That's just sloppy.

I usually get great deals on crab right after the crab harvest. They have 25# boxes at half the regular price. I scoop up a few and stash them in the deep freeze for those days I get a hankering for a leg or two. Tailgates also make a big dent in the stash.

If you intend on "stocking up" you could go down to H-Mart in Aurora or Pacific merchantile in Lodo.. As far as I know there are no restrictions @ either one. I know the Aussies are cutting back on rice production by 98% due to drought the last few growing seasons.

http://www.disinfo.com/content/story.php?title=United-States-Food-Shortage-Is-Real-Wal-Mart-Rations-Rice

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said its Sam's Club wholesale club chain is limiting the sale of some rice to four bags per member visit because of what it described as "supply and demand trends."

Jasmine, basmati and long-grain white rices will be subject to those purchase restrictions, as long as they are allowed by law, in the 594 clubs across the U.S., said Sam's Club spokeswoman Kristy Reed. New Mexico and Idaho are the only two states that forbid such practice, she said.

Reed declined to comment specifically on whether the restriction stemmed from a shortage in imports or a rush among consumers to hoard these commodities. Wal-Mart said at this point, it's not limiting purchases of flour or oil.

"We are working with our suppliers to address this matter to ensure we are in stock," Wal-Mart said in a statement.

Sam's Club's, the No. 2 U.S. wholesale club, made the announcement after the media reported that Costco Wholesale Corp., the largest U.S. wholesale club, is limiting sales of items such as rice and flour.

The global food inflation has led to riots in some developing countries as well as to cutbacks on rice exports from Asia, the world's largest exporter of rice.
