Surprising Pick (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft08/news/story?page=scoutsmock). Who the heck is Doug Kretz? And I don't want him near the Broncos.
Jerod Mayo, LB, Tennessee
Never easy to be in the Broncos' draft room and you never know what will be on the card that the commissioner reads. While Mayo is a little unexpected (we warned you), it makes perfect sense for this team. The run defense struggled last season and the Broncos need to move D.J. Williams back to weakside linebacker. It's hard to find weaknesses in Mayo's game. He's versatile and will move inside and immediately strengthen this unit.

This is the first "outside the box" pick that I actually think is plausible.

Nice...a career backup gets to be our starter.
I'd be fine with Mayo at #12. That'd mean the FO doesn't see Koutouvides as more than a stop gap at MLB and special teams contributor, but I'm fine with that. Mayo is a damn good linebacker, he'd be a great fit between DJ and Boss.

Couldn't we trade down to get this guy, esp. given our interest in other players like Williams, Mendenhall, Stewart? Jumping down five picks might net us a player we want and another pick.

You're probably right about him being no more than a solid backup.
I just have a hunch. Which is most likely a bad thing. !Booya!

I think Mayo is one of the better defensive players in this draft. I'm actually surprised as to how little respect he has gotten by a lot of the talking heads given his on the field performance combined with that excellent workout he had at the combine.
The Donks could do a lot worse at the 12th spot than Mayo.

Jerod Mayo is a stud. He will easily be a better NFL linebacker than Keith Rivers. He's an Al Wilson clone...a nasty hitting machine who patrols sideline to sideline with 4.5 speed and a 240 pound frame that delivers a wicked shot on ball carriers. He's perfect for this team. He played in the SEC against top competition and is an onfield leader who rang up 140 tackles last year. Only my desire for Chris Williams at 12 keeps me from not wanting him. If we could somehow trade back up into the early 20's after our 12th pick I'd be thrilled with this pick.

Dont think we could trade down too far for Mayo cos I'd say he's pretty near the top of the Lions board along with a RB or 2.

Funny you say that heres a couple quotes from Mayo in an interview he did with ESPN.
Jerod Mayo:"My favorite player growing up would have to be Al Wilson. Even in college."
Jerod Mayo: "I would say I compare to Al Wilson. Getting downfield and making plays on the ball."

There was news article talking about the Lions wanting to move to get Harvey (DE from UF). Article said Denver might be trading partner.

This would be just fine w/me- get an extra pick and I am more than OK w/trading back 3 picks and choosing from Mayo, Mendenhall, Stewart, Williams, Clady.

The Mayo/Wilson comparison isn't that great IMO, other than the same school. Look at the Mayo film on CNN/SI... he's much taller and longer than Wilson was. Don't get me wrong, I think he's probably the best LB in the draft. (I don't like Rivers at all) I actually think he'd be better at the SLB than MLB although he could play there. I want us to trade down with Det.,Hou or Ari who I think all would want Mendenhall. There is so much more value for us in this range esp. at positions we have needs at.
The value of Mayo, Stewart, and Williams for our team is what makes me hope we can move back to the mid teens and recoup our 3rd rounder. We'll have one of those three available at 15 or 16, and the 3rd would be a big help addressing all our areas of need.

Yep, I think the ideal situation for the non-OT lovers is to move back, get Mayo in the 1st, a DT in the 2nd so the linebackers can actually do their jobs, and an RT with the gained 3rd. At least, thats my dream.
