View Full Version : Doesn't Denver draft the 'unexpected'?

Through the years, and reading countless number of mock drafts, hasn't it always been the case, well under Shanny, Denver takes guys in the first round they hardly are in contact with and hardly talk too at the combine or they don't even bring them in (well to the best of my recollection).
Remember in 1996 John Mobley, he said he was shocked he got drafted by Denver.
D.J. Williams said the Broncs didn't contact him prior to getting drafted, Cutler said the same thing.
and Deltha O'Neal was a shocker, so I guess, despite what the mock draft states or what people speculate, should we expect something out of left field?

Should we expect something out of left field? Yes. But i hope not this time.

Out of left field? Probably not. Somebody better let the Broncos know Heath Bennedict is dead. I'd probably be the last bastard you'd wanna see on the street if the Broncos drafted a dead guy.

With this draft, I expect the unexpected but hope for the expected.

That's Shanahan's modus operandi to draft someone virtually NOBODY is discussing. We talk about Williams, Clady and Mendenhall a lot here, so I wouldn't be surprised if none of the above is drafted by the Broncos.

it's not EVERYTIME...Lelie wasnt out of left field. Either was DJ really. They might not have contacted him, but it certainly wasnt out of left field.

I guess I didn't state it the way I should've, I meant how Shanny drafts, normally, it seems the guys are surprised they got drafted by Denver because there wasn't much contact between the team and prospect.

Ha! LOL Ha!
What I'm ****ing serious. We've drafted so many injured players, so drafting a dead one wouldn't be beyond my expecations.
Just ask Kaylore how I feel about Heath Benedict and the Broncos probability of drafting him.

Who do we know that's injured, has character issues and we've yet to discuss...plus it has to be at a position where nobody would think we'd be looking at anyone? Find this guy and we have our man. ;D

Looking at this decade's picks:
2000: Deltha O'Neal - For those who may not remember Adam Schefter broke that O'Neal would be the pick in the morning paper of the Draft. O'Neal was a fast riser who went from being a 2nd rounder in most mocks to being selected #15 overall, it was later reported that O'Neal had shot up several team's boards including Seattle who was going to take him at #19 and instead took Shaun Alexander - how's that turn out?).
2001: Willie Middlebrooks - Several mock draft's had Middlebrooks going to Denver, primarily because O'Neal saw little-to-no playing time at CB as a rookie. Other predicted picks (as I recall) were WR's Freddie Mitchell, Quincy Morgan and Chad Johnson.
2002: Ashley Lelie - Lelie was a possible 10-15 pick before he had hamstring problems, because of that many mock drafts had Lelie going long before the Broncos pick. Mock drafts had Denver selecting Javon Walker, Ed Reed and Albert Haynesworth. With WR a major need, Lelie wasn't a surprise beyond the fact he had dropped a few picks.
2003: George Foster - After we signed Jake Plummer, mock drafts had us going with either Foster or Kwame Harris. I recall Calvin Pace and Dallas Clark mentioned in a few mocks but Foster was actually the name I recall seeing most often.
2004: DJ Williams - Before moving O'Neal to move up and after the Clinton Portis for Champ Bailey swap, Stephen Jackson was the popular pick with other thoughts of Chris Perry, Rashaun Woods and Kenechi Udeze. Following the trade, Jackson was the consensus pick among mocks with slight mention of Williams, Will Smith and Vince Wilfork. Passing on Jackson was a bit of a surprise but considering the losses of John Mobley and Ian Gold - Williams wasn't a totally unexpected pick.
2005: No 1st round pick
2006: Jay Cutler - This one was quite unexpected, obviously with the draft-day trade. There were slight rumblings Shanahan may have some interest in trading up for Cutler or Matt Leinhart, but with two 1st rounders - the mocks had Denver looking at a wide range of players including Lawrence Maroney, DeAngelo Williams, Sinorice Moss, Tamba Hali, Marcedes Lewis and Chad Jackson. Definitely the most unexpected pick of the decade.
2007: Jarvis Moss - Most mocks had the Broncos going for a DE or a S. Moss was mentioned in a few mock drafts along with Anthony Spencer. Reggie Nelson and Michael Griffin were also predicted but Moss was far from an unexpected pick.

so this pretty much refutes the entire basis of the thread. even more to the point - for the last three years imo nothing denver has done has been "unexpected." they have drafted to the teams needs. they have done quite the opposite of "unexpected." Maybe moving up for cutler was a bit of a surprise but overall we have been drafting to the teams positions of need for the last 3 years.

Well it was my mistake for not conveying my point clearly, I should've stated that the players seem to be surprised that they are picked by Denver.
And listen to DJ Williams talk, he didn't expect to be drafted by Denver.
He had no contact w/ them despite it being a position Denver could address.
Same w/ Cutler, Mobley.

We felt that anytime you could get a guy like DeSean with his speed and big play ability, you're really helping your football team. We weren't concerned that Lavelle Hawkins outperformed him last year, we think we did our homework here, we really liked his sophomore tape, we felt that if he was drafted based on that, he would actually be a top 5 pick,. Any character concerns are really overblown. We didn't see fit to actually interview him but we talked to a high school coach or two and they said he's fine. All that stuff is really overblown, we've done our homework, we actually thought it was kind of amusing that he decided to go to Cal instead of USC after USC said he could not wear the #1. We've heard he has an attitude problem as well, but we think he is just misunderstood and this is the National Football League, guys know that we here at the Denver Broncos have no tolerance for that anyway.
