I called one of those homeless windshild washers guys "Mac" after the last Blackhawk home game.

I said, "hey Mac don't get my windows dirty" after he jumped out to wash my windshield at a stop light.

True story but really has no point other than I said Mac and Windows in same sentence.

I could have said Buddy but I didn't want to encourage him so I went with Mac.

I have a question.

Why do Mac people seem to have such inferiority complexes? Is it included in the price, when you buy a Mac?

Honestly, I know my way around a computer a little. I've built my last five or six computers, can do upgrades, etc. In other words, I'm sure as heck no expert; but neither am I an idiot. I just can't see getting so passionate about it, on either side. After all, it's just a computer.

I've had Mac people almost get into physical confrontations over it. It's like:

"Hey, your mom tried to seduce me last night!"

"No kidding! That little tramp!"

"Yeah. And she said your Mac sucked."

"You take that back, you sonofabitch!"

Only buy Macs if you like for your computer to work, hassle free, so you can do what you originally set out to do. It automatically installs, updates, and takes care of itself. It integrates its software seamlessly between programs.

In other words, it works gracefully so you spend less time messing around "with" your computer and more time messing around "on" your computer.

It just works, very well.

I can say this because over the years I have owned around 30 Macs (for business and personal use), and the quality control has been a consistent factor. They just work.

I would wait a little on the Imacs.

They are due for an upgrade or revision soon. Expect to see a new IMac by June at the latest.

If you need a Imac now, go ahead and get one. But if you can wait a couple of months, and speed and specs are important to you, the Imac will have a new processor, video card etc.

Look man - run and do what makes you happy. An OS is just an OS when it comes down to home user and ownership.

Mac guys are going to tell you to buy a mac, windows guys will tell you to run windows.

I personally have a setup where i can run any OS virtually - so my hardware is more PC/Server side equipment.

I've had a windows xp install that's over 2 years stable (no reloads and performance is still good) - Vista - IMO is a POS. I'll ride XP for the MS/OS of choice.

But really, when it comes down to home users and avg users - just use what makes you the most happy. That's all it boils down to anymore - everything can do everything so to speak.

In fact, here is how cool it is:

Last week one of my admins re-installed ESX on a blade to re-create a host and it over wrote a LUN on the SAN that contained our production websites and SQL VM's. Once we realized what had happen we thought we were doomed. The servers, oddly, were still running. Using the convertor we yanked them off the LUN and transfered them to another. Had we rebooted the VM's they would have been lost.

The Dell 805v has the visor embedded and 16 dimm slots, 2 quad cores (VM/DRS can only accessfour cores anyway, but it's still good) with fiber nics. At 8 or 4 GB dimms you have a powerful VM machine. I haven't seen the Xen tools. Gosh, I just don't think I would need more than what VMware offers.

Oh that clears it up... Hehe...

They are talking about VMWare baja... It runs on all sorts of platforms and allows you to make snapshots, clone, patch, reboot and all sorts of cool stuff within a virtual system. It's cool stuff. It kinda pokes fun at the clowns who are one sided anything in terms of OS because it's very easy to run several operating systems on the same hardware. For example I have the VMWare Workstation client running on my home PC. I got it for free in a VMWare class and I'm running XP, Ubuntu and I've fiddled with Solaris X86 and other flavors of Linux. It's a cool way to test software and hardware because you can create images on the fly, destroy them and rebuild them with a few clicks of the mouse.

Here is the webpage: http://www.vmware.com/

Hope that clears it up for ya! :strong:

BTW, If you want a poor mans Microsoft version you could take a look at Virtual PC. I'm not sure how much support Virtual PC has for other operating systems but I think you can get it free or dirt cheap.

My wife and I are thinking about buying an iMac computer and would love to hear your feedback. If you own one or have used one, I'd like to know what the pro's and con's are and if it's worth the money.

To date, all we have owned are Dells and Gateways.

Thanks!!

If you've owned Dells and Gateways, you're going to be thrilled to switch over to Max OSX, and the iMacs are particularly nice. I've got the core duo 24" and absolutely love it. Fast, highly stable, great display and the best operating system available, not to mention the most user-friendly.

My 76 year old father in law finally got fed up with his PCs dying and getting bugs. He just switched and bought a Macbook. He's been absolutely thrilled with it. It's awesome to see a guy his age that excited about his computer experience as opposed to fighting with his machine constantly. I've seen this same story play out with so many people, I've lost count.

Most people his age would just give up and stick with what they knew. He's a happy camper. He was logging all of his digital photos and setting up his new scanner last time he visited. He didn't even need my help, as opposed to his Windows experience, which always seemed troubling for him.

You and your family will be thrilled. Cost a little more, but so do most things worth having. But, you know the expression... "you'll never be sorry you bought the best.

Enjoy.

Enjoy.

This proves the overall point of all these discussions... Users who aren't powers users or who have limited computer knowledge should probably use a MAC because of the way it dominates the experience. Power users like to manipulate so a PC is a better way to go if you don't know UNIX etc.

This proves the overall point of all these discussions... Users who aren't powers users o.

Absolutely incorrect.

I work in an industry full of some of the biggest "power-users" you'll find, most of which are on Mac.

Don't confuse people who like to tinker, or companies who choose cheap products with "power users."

Let me help you out a bit.

PCs are more customizable. Does that mean much to the average user? Not really. Why? Because most of the "customizing" involves adding upgraded hardware that already exists in most Macs. Having to add a PCI card to run firewire devices is not an advantage, it's a pain in the ass.

Is there a place for PCs and Windows? Of course. Big companies on budgets, companies putting together servers and networks, etc. Certainly, there are applications where buying a custom-made box is more efficient.

That's not "power" user, that's just a more bare bones product that can be manipulated for specific purposes.

Problem is, 95% of the computer-buying public (some of which are "power users") don't need to be tinkering with their machine and taking it apart in the living room. They need a stable OS and a stable hardware set and an efficient machine.

User-friendly doesn't mean stupid, it means smart. I'll say it again.... user-friendly doesn't mean stupid, it means smart. The fact that a 76 year old man can function at a high level and do advanced (beyond what I mentioned) computing tasks with ease means the device is SMART, not the other way around.

If you need any further example of that, just go ahead and try out any Windows Mobile "Smart" phone. They're the most idiotic things you've ever seen. Blackberry, Apple and others make true "smart" phones. Smart devices empower you with simplicity and effectiveness, they don't require you to overcome challenges to do simple tasks.

Efficient is smart. Stable is smart. Those are "power" traits.

You're correct in that there is a time and place for both platforms/hardware sets. You're incorrect that one has anything more to do with "power" than the other. Both have their "power" position.

Again, if you've worked extensively with both platforms in a business environment as many of us here have, all of this would be pretty apparent.

Thanks, Popps! That's comforting to hear b/c we just bought the iMac!

Woo hoo! I think it will be one of the best purchases we have made in a long time.

The specs are below:
20" screen
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
320GB hard drive1
8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory

Thanks to everyone who provided their input. I know the thread almost incited riots with pitchforks and torches, but the insight was extremely helpful. :peace:

Go iMac's and Go Broncos!!

I just bought my wife a white MacBook - she loves it; and I'm planning on getting a 15" MacBook Pro as my next IT purchase sometime in the summer.
