Match ups are set. Teams are ready to go. The Western conference looks to be a series of knock down, drag out games. The east...no so much but in the second round things should heat up.

Lets keep the internet tough guy stuff out of this and try to talking Basketball and match ups, strategies, etc.
Some predictions

Lakers Nuggs- Lakers in 6
Hornets Mavs- Here's the first big upset. Mavs get revenge for last year Mavs in 7
Spurs/Suns- Suns in 6.
Rockets/Jazz -Jazz in 5

Boston -Atlanta Boston in 4
Detroit Phili- Pistons in 5
Orlando Toronto -Orlando in 6
Cleveland Washington- Cavs in 6

I was at the Mavs game last night. I know the Hornets didn't have that much to play for but Dallas looked good. A upset is deff possible.

With regards to the west, the only "true" upset (7 games separating the two) would be if Denver somehow figured a way to play defense against the Lakeshow and beat them. The rest of the field is pretty well even with only five games seperating #2 from #7.

True. That would be the only real upset. The Lakers won the West by 1 game. They could have easily been a 2-5 seed.

Interesting that the Hornets are getting no love. I see them going all the way to the Conference Championships.

Have ya'll watched them a lot this year...or is it just the matchup you don't like?

This is a very, very good team. Paul is deserving of the MVP, West is deserving of the most improved and Peja has been money. They can play well at home or on the road.

I see this series being over in 5.

See that's the misconception. They can play D, when motivated. The ppg given up stat is misleading because of how many they score. I'm not saying their overall D is good, but when they put forth the effort they have played some good, almost great defense at times. People that don't follow the Nuggs only see the ppg given up. It's not like the Lakers are the late 80s pistons either.

Agreed. It's sometimes frustrating to watch them come out and play awesome defense as they did in, say, the Houston game Sunday and wonder why they don't do it more consistantly. They are, however, capable of doing so.

I see the Lakers as a bit of a paper tiger: beyond Kobe and the ancient Fisher, they have zip in terms of playoff experience and I see no reason they can't be had. If not by the Nuggets, almost certainly by Phoenix/San Antonio/ Dallas - whoever. They won't be winning the West.

Kobe on playing in this year's playoffs-"I'm not playing with butter knives this year."

“I play for a coach that has nine championships. I’m going to get one before you do.”
-Coby Karl to his father, George Karl on ESPN radio

This could also mark a new beginning for Kobe Bryant, who hasn't been on the winning side in a playoff series since the 2004 Western Conference finals.

The Lakers were a bland 121-125 the previous three regular seasons, a fact that tugged undeniably at Bryant after their meek exit against the Suns last season.

He was asked Saturday if he was hungry to win a playoff series.

"I've been waiting to eat for a while," he said. "The table's set. I'll sit down at the dinner table and I've got to finish my dinner."

Pau's ready to rock and so am I. Lakers in 5.

Then they'll get shocked when they play real playoff teams, teams who can actually shoot free throws and play defense. Well, Phoenix can't play D either, but at least its better than the Nuggets. lol

Yeah Hawk I would take a step back on the smack. The Nuggets looked pathetic.

I wish someone would actually coach the nuggets instead of sit there and play bumper belly before the game. Every free throw they took today they were falling back. Stand tall and shoot its fundamentals. But nope they did the shoot and lean back. Don't get me started on Defense. The nuggets play half defense. Meaning they actually make a stop and pat themselves on the back meanwhile they guy they just trapped has passed to the open man and he has a clear path to the hoop. Its just pathetic basketball. Its why the nuggets won't do anything in the playoffs ever this way.

This one's on Karl (sound like a broken record?). Things were going great with JR and LK providing energy with AI running the point and K-Mart playing great D on Kobe. So genius Karl decides to go back to his man-love for AC and we wind up with wonderful defensive matchups like AC and Iverson guarding guys twice their size. Also, has Karl ever heard of calling a time out? Geese, this series is starting to take shape as the coaching matchup of Albert Einstein vs. Bozo the Clown. Lakers in 4.

The only person who can stop JR Smith is George Karl. He did it successfully today after JR's very efficient 7 minutes in the 1st half. By the time he saw the court again, the Nuggets trailed by 15 points and 2 minutes were left in the 3rd. It was basically over.

I wouldn't be too thrilled if I were the Lakers.

The large majority of that win was free-throw shooting. Nuggets made barely 50% from the line ... that won't happen again. Iverson missed at least 6 FTs by my count. Gasol is a monster, though. I just don't get how that trade went down. Gregg Popovich said the league shoulda looked into blocking the trade. I won't go that far, but Memphis management are serious fools ...

Kobe too is such a b!tch ... what an unattractive personality he is for a superstar. That's not news to anybody I guess, but what I thought would be a wail of a blowout actually became a far closer game than the Lakers oughtta be comfortable with. Nugs closed it to 9 points with 3 minutes to play ... that should not have happened.

Not exactly. Charges were dropped after a financial settlement was reached. He may well have been found innocent had the case gone to trial. The waters were certainly muddied by various behaviors of the 'victim'.

At any rate, regarding the University of Colorado, can you name a single person who was publically implicated on a rape charge?

Nope, the case got dropped by the prosecution after the woman who got raped withdrew her support for the case because she didn't want to be in the public spotlight anymore. She did file a civil suit though, which was settled out of court, reportedly for an 8 figure sum. I'd figure an aspiring rent-a-cop would have known that.

The only person who can stop JR Smith is George Karl. He did it successfully today after JR's very efficient 7 minutes in the 1st half. By the time he saw the court again, the Nuggets trailed by 15 points and 2 minutes were left in the 3rd. It was basically over.

I agree to a point. But JR is still a liability in he gets caught up in the emotion of the game. See his flagrant foul on Walton and then eventually fouling out. A true star stays even keeled and he is either too high or too low.

I want to go on record on the reason I hate Kobe isn't because of how he was accused of raping a girl. Its how he was a punk and loud mouth ass and ran Shaq and Coach Phil Jackson. I lost all respect for him and a horrible role model.

It will be interesting to see how much the Spurs have left in the tank. They played some pretty embarrassing games in the last few weeks of the regular season, e.g., @Utah, @LAL, etc., where they looked pretty vulnerable.

Plus, Shaq has owned Duncan over the years. It would be expecting a lot for him to hang 40 on Shaq every game in a seven game series.

I wouldnt say he has owned Duncan. Both have stats that are very close to one another. Is it true that Shaq has always been hard to defend near the basket? Oh yea. He is just a physical speciman that cant be matched by anyone in terms of out right physicalness. But, now Shaq is but a former shell of himself while Duncan still has much more in the tank. The thing that has made the Spurs so good is that they dont need Duncan to score 40 every night. He has a lot more entangibles and versatility than Shaq which makes him a far better overall player than Shaq. But stat comparison wise both are pretty much even. Found this on the net regarding the debate on both players and this guy breaks it down pretty well.

Listening to the fan there is this guy who always calls in with the +/- of the game. Kind of like NHL stats or Turn Overs in the NFL.

Here is a stat that just epitomizes my frustration with Carmelo Anthony. With him in the game on Sunday the Nuggets were -14 in points. With him out they were +8. They had an 8 point lead when he was subbed back in. We all know what happend after that. They avereged the +/- and he is a negative all year. Of course that is averages and he did win them some games but man it glaringly highlights his piss poor defense.

Couple quotes and tidbits...

"You have to anticipate that they're going to do what's successful in the game they played against us. At that level, they were successful drawing fouls, driving the ball to the basket. We'll try to limit that," Phil Jackson said. "Their zone was effective at some points in the game. There was times when their man to man defense was effective in the style that they play it. We had to make some offensive adjustments there, too."

Definitely Kobe needs to ease up on the fouls, it hurt his effectiveness on D and Offense. He still got his points but his shots weren't going through. Also nice to see good ol' Phil playing mind games already...as if to say "Yeah we already know what they will do".

http://thelakersnation.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/zen.jpg

"They've got to see us again. They've got to see us for six more games. We ain't going nowhere," Denver forward Carmelo Anthony vowed Sunday.

Somebodies been drinking...but yes Carmelo...you are not going anywhere.

The Rocky Mountain News -
George Karl admitted on Sunday that Denver was hoping to play the Hornets and not the top-seeded Lakers in the first round, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

"I'm not going to deny we were rooting to play New Orleans," he said. "We wanted to play the more inexperienced team."

Sounds like Coach Karl needs to get a dog...Hilarious!

ONE MORE THING: Whenever Carmelo stepped to the free throw line at Staples Center, the fans chanted "D-U-I, D-U-I". Ha, ha, very clever, Lakers fans. Well I hope we Nuggets fans greet Lakers' star Kobe Bryant with a similar chant about his past infractions with the law when he arrives at Pepsi Center on Saturday. How about "SETTLE-MENT, SETTLE-MENT"? I'm open to any ideas you've got.

"Close" only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

But we're not talking about career stats - we're talking about the head-to-head matchup bewteen Shaq and Duncan.

Most recently:

Shaq has followed his own advice this season. In the Suns' two games with O’Neal against the Spurs, he has held Duncan to 15-of-40 shooting in two Phoenix victories. Without O’Neal, the Suns split with the Spurs and Duncan shot 22-of-41 from the field

The Nuggets are a fantasy team: they look great on paper, but struggle in reality. Lots of changes need to be made, starting with Karl. He just has no passion for the game anymore. Iverson needs to go, as much as I admire his work ethic. His domination of the ball is not conducive to winning basketball, and often contributes to his teammates becoming spectators. Camby probably needs to go, too. As Alfred Williams noted on the radio the other day, 'if Gasol is considered finesse, what does that make Camby?'. That had the ring of truth. I'm sick of the way Carmelo currently plays the game, but as young as he is it's tough to give up on him. At 28 or whatever, this is the 1st season that bryant has gotten over his me first style of play. Lots of pieces are in place, but some serious changes need to be made in this offseason.

I know this about playoff basketball but here is my proposal that I will hand to Stan Kroenke right before he boards his plain.

Honorable Stan, ---- You have to speak their speak

I provide you with the cures that ail your beloved Thuggets, er Nuggets. But truth be told you have a merry band of thieves and hoods.

I surmise to you that you fire George, sit and collect paycheck, Karl. I coach 8 year olds who can comprehend man to man and rotation better than you.

I also ask that you trade Carmelo Anthony to the highest bidder. He ain't ever going to be much except an offensive threat. Do you realized that he is a -14 when on the court. I understand you don't know what I just said. Ask your other team the Avs if -14 is a good thing. You will see ghost faces and probably crying. Why because they are trying to figure out who got that death stat and how. Carmelo probably doesn't even know about it unless its his drop in BAC between the arrest and his testing.

Marcus Camby should not be lauded as a great defender. Do you know the term blown by his man. Yeah neither does Marcus. He gets beat down low and like Mr. Elastic stretches those 9ft arms out and makes the awesome block of all bail out blocks. So get rid of him.

Nene I have no clue but **** he can't stay skinny in the offseason so enroll his fat ass on The Biggest Looser. Then keep him away from the lolitas and get him in the zone. Or since that is impossible ship his ass out too.

Please oh grand master of Sports Empires ( have to kiss some ass) Please Leave Lenis Kleiza, Eduardo Najera, J.R. Smith, brafldjaflksfha, I puked that I said this.

What is up with Nash? Man he is looking like dog meat out there. Shaq too. His defense is ok but for 20million, you would hope he had some offense left in the tank. I see almost nothing of the Shaq who used to just rip down the rims with people hanging on him. But if you want my take, the Suns are just getting whipped in the backcourt. Manu and Parker are just much much better then Bell, Nash and Barbosa. I think you have to make a trade for a 2 guard next year who can penetrate the lane. Hill is nice but also showing his age. This team looks very old suddenly. I think they must make some changes in the backcourt if they are to contend next year.
