Two wide receivers attract Denver's eye

Samie Parker, right, caught 41 passes for the Chiefs in 2006. (AP file)The Broncos are close to signing former Kansas City Chiefs receiver Samie Parker and are deep in discussions with Darrell Jackson, the former No. 1 pass-catching threat for the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers, according to multiple NFL sources.
Parker, 27, was the Chiefs' No. 2 receiver in 2005-06, averaging 38.5 catches and 547 yards. He and the Broncos could finalize an agreement today.
Few receivers have a more impressive resume than Jackson, who was released by San Francisco after last season largely to avoid paying $4 million in salary and bonus. He has averaged 61 receptions in his eight NFL seasons and has three seasons of at least 1,000 yards. He caught 10 TD passes in 2006.
Williams' visit.
Among the draft-eligible players visiting the Broncos this week is Vanderbilt offensive tackle Chris Williams, who was in Sunday. The college visit period ends Friday.
Restricted means restricted.
For Broncos defensive backs Domonique Foxworth, Hamza Abdullah and Karl Paymah, it was a tough year to become a restricted free agent.
There were nearly 100 restricted free agents on the market this offseason. With the deadline Friday for teams to submit offer sheets, only four restricted free agents have changed teams, including Broncos center Chris Myers, who wound up with the Houston Texans in exchange for a sixth- round pick.

I would rather have Darrell Jackson, for all his drops, than Parker...but Parker was a decent deep threat for KC for awhile. It seems like we must really hate the draft's WR class.
Re: Chris Williams, I know everyone wants to now write him off since we are talking to him, but actually, DEN has a history of drafting people we bring in for visits right before the draft. See e.g. Scheffler, Marcus Thomas, Clarett, Antwon Burton (we didnt draft him, but quickly signed him in the UDFA period, which suggests he could have just as easily been a 6/7 round pick of the team), Todd Pinkston (we didnt draft him, but Shanny said after the draft that we were targetting him). I believe there are a few others that fit into this list as well. It's who we talk to at Pro Days, Combine, Sr. Bowl etc. that are the real smokescreens.

I think Shanny wants to have WR with some experience under his belt instead of someone riding the pine mostly his first year. Perhaps made a bit more of a focus due to Marshall's injury and hedging all bets that he will be 100%. This years WR class has some decent depth but not any true first round wonders.
I think this signifies we go OT, DT and RB (though the order remains to be seen) with a LB and safety and Center/guard replacement for Nalen/Myers picked up somewhere along the way as well. Plus we get Robinson in the trade to shore up the Dline with Thomas, Moss, Crowder and Doom all being much more effective this year with all the experience under their belts.

Broncos need more bodies at WR so signing Jackson or Parker, to go with Colbert, and then maybe draft one as well isn't a bad idea. True Parker not anything that will get us back into the playoffs but if Marshall can't play right away in preseason we will need bodies just to get by.

Yeah, I never bought that as far as the players are concerned. I mean, this is pretty over-simplified, but when you run a business, you have a budget. X dollars goes here, Y dollars go there. Sometimes the money doesn't just flow over from one place to help out the other.
It sucks that Mason and the other 7 employees were let go, but I never even thought that had anything to do with the state of player contracts.
On topic: I really think Jackson is the #2 receiver we're looking for. He's been relatively healthy his whole career, which is huge, and he's been productive too. As recently as 2006 he's been great (10 TDs, just shy of 1000 yds). Sign him to Colbert's deal. And please not Parker, jeebus. There's no way he would even beat out Stokley.

I'd be happy w/ the signing of both of these guys. Jackson could be a really nice complement to Marshall as #2 WR. I imagine he and Colbert would compete to start.
Parker could be our deep threat.
We'd have nice depth w/ Marshall, DJax, Colbert, Stokley and Parker. And Martinez. WR could then be picked later on in the draft, maybe a WR/KR type.
Also in favor of signing Vanderjagt and Berger. We need veterans to at least be competition to what we have and any draft picks/UFAs we sign.

I hadn't realized D-jack was still available, I'm all for signing him. I don't care for Parker, but I doubt he would cost much more than league minimum and wouldn't be a lock to make the 53 man roster regardless. As a #2 D-jack is top 3rd of the league,

If Denver can bring in one, or both of these guys it would be a tremendous shot in the arm to depth of the WR corps. If, IF, BMarsh is healthy you've got him as your #1 with Stokley in the slot and Scheffler at the pass-catching TE spot. You've then got Jackson, Colbert and Parker competing for #2 with the others competing with Martinez for what would be a much deeper unit than last season.
If the price is right, these could be nice little short-term signings that would allows us to put off drafting a WR early for a season to see what BMarsh's health is like. I still have a hard time believing we'll go OT in round 1, as much as I'd like to.
Nice post. That about sums it up for me as well. I have no problem with Jackson,i think he could be a really good addition.

I don't know all that I've read says he will be a 2nd rounder and since we don't have a 3rd rounder. I think Cutler would have immediate chemistry with the guy and be valuable to this team.
Reminds me of last year. Just a week before the darft and Shanny brought in two linebackers, basically putting to rest any need to draft a linebacker in round one or two.
This year Shanny is putting to rest the need (or apparent fandom) of drafting a receiver in rounds one or two.

One of the least intelligent things that this franchise could do is invest a #12 overall pick on a RB, when there are other talented blue chippers for the taking.
It is rare that the Broncos earn a pick this high. Using that type of pick on a RB would be a monumental waste considering Denver's consistent ability to put quality starters in the backfield.
Travis Henry and Selvin Young both will be there this season. No need to waste a pick on a RB when you can snag a high quality OT or DT at the top of the board.
The value of a quality OT or DT absolutely dwarfs the value of a quality RB. Especially for the Broncos.

It seems like the Broncos are more interested in getting some veteran depth at wide receiver than going the early route of receiver; which could be thanks in part due to the character concerns with a lot of the top receivers -- or the fact that there is just a plethora of "B" grade talent; but not a whole lot of stand outs.
I'd like to see both of these guys brought in here. Can't blame Jackson for his poor season with the 49ers given the circumstances, and I think that a change of scenery for Parker could maybe help. Get them both, and then just spend a Day 2 pick on a receiver.
I'd feel a whole lot better with Parker and Jackson (who has extensive WCO experience) in the mix than going into this draft without getting either and spending a high choice on a kid who might have to ride the pine and learn the complexities of the offense.
Get these deals done and move forward. It can't hurt this team by adding players, it really can't.

Parker is crap-in-cleats, but it would be neat to see him have a 3 td day against the mullets, but that isn't gonna happen. Jackson may be the better choice if he signs. At least he has had some success.
All of the "need" areas will have been "addressed" in the off season except the lines and RBs. That gives me a clue; I have to believe that the OT-DT combo is the better bet, but I would not actually bet on that. The Broncos' FO is just too unpredictable. Oh yeah, even if we got these guys, I think we look for a receiver with our stash of Day 2 picks. Why the **** not, ya know?
I like the Parker acquisition. Im guessing he wouldnt cost much and there is potentially a big reward. He has the speed to be the deep threat that would make the defense have to defend all parts of the field. We already have a QB with the arm to do that but the threat that Parkers speed provides makes it harder for the defense to cheat up against the run or jump Marshalls route.

Despite any history of getting burned looking for a bargain in recent years, I still have to support the logic in making these moves. With the sheer numer of question marks surrounding our team it makes sense to looks for some bargain bin talent at a poistion that isn't really filled with abundant talent in the draft. If these guys don't improve the team, they won't be on it.

I said the day he was released from SF that we should sign him. DJax would be a nice addition for Cutler. I would feel very comfortable with Jackson, Colbert, Stokely, and Martinez... and assuming he can get healthy, Brandon Marshall. Jackson and Kelly are pretty similar. But, Kelly would take time to fit in and there's concerns with his knees.
This opens the door to go Chris Williams #1 and Johnson #2!!! I love Johnson's speed and the fact that he can line up in the back field and split out (like we tried to do with Tatum even though he couldn't catch ****!) and be an effective receiver. I know we're sitting pretty good with our RB situation but Johnson would be a Reggie Bush type player, minus the shifty runs. Johnson doesn't have the wiggle of Bush, but everything else is there... with more speed!

Old? He's only 29. Plenty of gas left in that tank.
Stone handed? Here come the sheep again. Gotta love judging a guy based off those sportscenter highlights from 2004 and 2005. Here are the facts: he hasn't had a problem with the dropsies in two seasons. He was awesome in 2006 and serviceable last season. Would any receiver have put up great numbers in SF last year? I think not. And I'm actually basing my opinion off of watching him in entire games, because I've had him in my fantasy leagues from 2004-2006 (dropped him halfway through 2007), so I've had a vested interest.

You're great at finding talent but I'm not so sure you understand the NFL sometimes. The reason the Broncos like to draft RBs and LBs so much is b/c they can play multiple positions and make an impact their rookie years. WR are usually too soft to play well on STs. Plus they take a season or two to really make an impact at their position. In the last 100 or so WRs drafted there have been only a small handfull (see Boldin, Clayton, and Colston) to make a big impact their rookie seasons. Meanwhile, Denver has to consider Brandon Stokely's impact last year a success... thus going after more guys that understand how to get open and have had success in the past.
I'm pretty sure Denver looks at guys like DeSean Jackson, Devin Thomas, James Hardy, Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly, and Mario Manningham and thinks they can be good in the NFL... they just don't have time to wait.
I think drafting a guy in the 4th round would be a smart move. Avery, Douglas, and if at all possible Kelly in the 4th!

Jackson as a #1 is serviceable. As a #2 he is outstanding. Good post!

Great idea as long as he is never thrown the ball as his odds of catching it are 50% at best. Over-rated, old, stone handed bum. Parker is worse. Neither should be signed.

Right on BB... I would LOVE to have him as a number 2. Marshall and Jackson on the outside, Stokes in the slot with Scheff and Graham at tight end. This could be good.

I have to agree...you have to look at his last couple years in Seattle. You can't judge him by his lone year last year with the 49ers with freakin Alex Smith as QB! He's shown he can be productive. Bring him in!!

I understand what you're saying completely; but just didn't think about it in that post. That's something I had highlighted elsewhere. ^5
Wide receivers don't usually breed immediate success; I know that -- and coupled with my other statements; is probably a reason (and the ones you stated) is why we're approaching other avenues. ^5

Hilarious! Hilarious!
Samie Parker?!? Sweet Christ. As if Wiegmann wasn't bad enough.
You know, the more I think about it, the more I'm jealous of KC. At least their coach knows their previous strategy was a big bunch of BS and he's blowing the whole thing up. In a few years they're going to be filled with solid young players like the Chargers are, and we'll still be doing the same-old same-old, trading for injured vets and signing castoffs while Shanny tries to convince everyone that we're just one or two players away.

I still have a hard time believing we'll go OT in round 1, as much as I'd like to.
I can't believe it either. There's only two ways we go OT in the first round: 1) it's a RIGHT tackle, or 2) they're giving up on Ryan Harris already. Remember - Harris was a high 3rd round pick despite the fact he had back surgery just a few weeks before draft day. That makes him a 2nd-round (or higher) LEFT tackle talent, one favorably compared to Matt Lepsis, whom we just drafted jus a year ago. I cannot see an LT ... doesn't make sense.
SoCal, you make an good historic point about pre-draft visits from players we truly are interested in ... but this is a Vanderbilt guy, so there may be other reasons.

I agree. I think either one could be a good fit. They are both solid vets that would add depth and be affordable. Why anyone would not like this is beyond me.
They just want players with no negatives. It's naive though to think every hole can be filled with a complete player. At this point Broncos just trying to fill holes with even average players.

You're missing the point. The Broncos would be bringing in the Chiefs #2 WR to compete for the Broncos #4 WR position. It's not like they are bringing him in to become the new #1. Jeez.

My point is, Ed was a "mere mortal" when he came to Denver. It turned out alright. People act like Darrell Jackson would be an insult as a number 2 or Samie Parker at 3 or 4... it's crazy.

Maybe people should remind themselves about the roster before they complain about guys like Jackson coming in to compete. We need depth, and the more competition, the better.
I don't want to bash anyone, but if we get enough new talent to knock guys like Martinez off the squad, I will be more confident about the upcoming season. We need some playmakers, and we might be starting our season without our #1 talent. We can't afford to throw our first few games if Brandon is still on the mend...

And please not Parker, jeebus. There's no way he would even beat out Stokley.
Nobody is taking the number 3 slot position from Stokely. He is the best slot receiver in the league. That is basically set in stone that he is number 3. Marshall (number 1 - barring lingering injury) and Stokely (number 3 - slot receiver) are already set, all these other guys and any drafted players are to compete for 2, 4, and as special teams contributors.

Right on BB... I would LOVE to have him as a number 2. Marshall and Jackson on the outside, Stokes in the slot with Scheff and Graham at tight end. This could be good.
Add in a QB with a cannon for an arm amd accuracy as a passer and Jackson doesn't drop nearly as many as he did in San Francisco with Alex SMith tossing him the ball

Hilarious!
Yep. It's the only way to build a team.

Previously we've signed overpriced vets on the wrong side of 30 to big money deals and inked them in to starting spots.
This year we've signed a bunch of 20-somethings to reasonable contracts and are bringing them in to compete.
Not even remotely close to the same thing.
Wiegmann started in KC, he doesn't get off our bench unless someone gets hurt and even then he's probably going to be battling Fenton and a rookie to do so.
Parker isn't replacing Javon or bumping Stokley down. He's probably not even battling with Glenn Martinez or Keary Colbert. He's fighting guys like Taylor Jacobs and Marquay McDaniel.
Darrell Jackson as a #2 isn't a bad signing either. Not too long ago he was Seattle's #1 and he was the #1 in SF last year. He's a good option for #2, also on a one year deal.
Same kind of signing as Niko Koutouvides. Hell, of the four only Koutouvides and Jackson are even going to have realistic shots at starting. Our depth hasn't been NFL level for a long time because we've missed on a lot of late round draft picks, signing a bunch of vets still in their 20's to low cost one year deals is the quickest way to start adding legitimate talent to our depth chart.

Oh, he'll catch the ball now. He'll just go down by "phantom tacklers."

Great now he can drop balls here.
Stats proved out he was right in the middle as far as dropping balls. He wasn;'t grerat wasn't bad just average. Obviously his drop have ben blowen out of proportion. I just hopes he can make a few big plays ouitside of the two drop he will have.
