View Full Version : The Official 2008 OM Mock Draft UDFA Round
BowlenBall
04-13-2008, 03:54 AM
Now that all picks are in for the 2008 OM mock draft, we’ll begin the Undrafted Free Agent (UDFA) round. Below is a quick rundown on how we’ll proceed (based on jens1893’s system from last year):
1. All teams begin with $100,000 to bid for players which were not selected in the 2008 OM mock draft.
2. Minimum bid for a player is $5000. Bids can be made in $100 increments only. There will only be one round of bidding, so any cash you have left over will be useless. In other words – use it or lose it.
3. Please submit bids in this format:
Name, Position, College, Bid
Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt, $30,000
Jarvis Moss, DE, Florida, $11,400
Al Wilson, LB, Tennessee, $23,700
Total Spent: $65,100
4. PLEASE do not submit bids for players who have already been selected in the mock draft. Refer to JCMElway’s lists before you submit your bid. Any bids for pre-selected players will be ignored, and the team owner will NOT be notified of his error.
4. Tiebreaker: if two or more teams bid the same amount for the same player, than whoever sent the first PM will be considered the winner. If this seems unfair to you in any way – well, you should have bid $100 more for that player.
5. Please send all bids via one and only one PM to me (expatfan) any time between now and 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday, April 18th. Please title the PM “UDFA – team name”. All bids received after the deadline will be considered null and void, as will any bids sent subsequent to your first PM.
6. Results will be posted sometime on Saturday, April 20th, dependant on when and how much time my wife will grant me to sit in front of the computer on the weekend….
7. In the interests of transparency, I will submit my own list via PM to JCMElway within the next day, and before I review any of the bids submitted. In addition, I will disqualify myself from the tiebreaker rules, meaning that any tie that I am involved with will go to the other team.
8. As I receive bids, I will post confirmation below, along with a sequence number indicating when they submitted it to me (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.). An example is below under the New Orleans Saints:

Thanks, but watching's more fun. I'm also fairly convinced that most everyone here does a better job at the college game than I do. If you want to see 7-9 Nittany Lions go to a single team, though, count me in. Hilarious!

Hmmmmm.......I put my bids in, but I kind of like doing it all positions at once. That way no one position possibly gets less emphasis for going last.
However, going one position at a time does spread the UDFA out over a couple of days and allows people to use more money if they don't get their guy.
OK, who wants to do the UDFA by the day, and who wants to do it all in one shot?
JCMElway
04-13-2008, 11:53 AM
OK, I PMed expat. Hold the phone kids, we may be doing this one position at a time.
It worked pretty well last year, right?

Personally, i dont like the idea of going by position because some people dont need certain positions and to have to wait around for it to come up would create a problem for some people.
JCMElway
04-13-2008, 11:55 AM
Doesn't matter. If we decide to go one day at a time all current bids will just be pulled back and we'll go to QBs for the first round.
And were all bids made publicly in the thread, or were they in private to Jens?
Northman
04-13-2008, 11:57 AM
I would think they would be private.

I really, really, REALLY prefer to do it all in one shot, for the following reasons:
1. It replicates the real NFL UDFA signing period, which is kind of the point, right? Most teams sign 5-6 UDFAs maximum, and spend around $10,000 to $20,000 per. In addition, the signings are all done simultaneously in a post-draft frenzy.
2. It adds another level of strategy, in that you're bidding blind on multiple positions, and must balance your desire for one or two players with your desire to get several on the cheap, without any idea of who the other bidders are targeting.
3. It's much more fair, as several of us will be unable to check the Mane every day for several consecutive days, and will therefore have days when they can't participate. I'm in this group, as I've got a business trip this week.
That being said, I'm willing to bow to the wishes of the people -- if several teams are dead set on doing it position by position, feel free to speak up. We can decide by tomorrow what we're gonna do. I'll leave the bids unopened in my PM inbox, just in case....

I'd like to applaud ExpatFan for all the work he puts into this but maybe we should consider something a bit more realistic next year for UDFA and do it similar to the draft, i.e the Phins get to take the 1st UDFA and so on. That way at least any team interested in UDFA will get to choose a player. This way is blind and is hit or miss and could end up with some teams bidding yet winning no players. Judging by the interest in UDFA you may well only have 10-12 owners vying for players so you could double up.
i.e Miami get 1 and 2 then when you come to the last team, they get 4 choices and it then runs in reverse order much like we do in Fantasy all-time player drafts in here.
Any thoughts???

15 bids in now -- just a few more hours till the deadline.
Cautionary note - Mike McGlynn was picked at 92 in the mock draft, but is not listed on JCMElway's alphabetical list. He is, however, listed on the "Make Your Picks Here" list.

The deadline is past, and 17 teams have bid! Below are the results, with a few caveats:
1. Players who were already taken in the OM Mock draft (Mike McGlynn, Kerry Brown, Louis Holmes, Jameel McClain) are not listed.
2. Bids which were under the $5,000 minimum were not listed.
3. Where there are identical high bids, the first person to submit is the winner, and is listed at the top.

I'm quite disappointed I never added a DT but I wanted to put the majority of money where the value was in players like Stevens TE (rated on most boards as a 3rd-4th rounder) and Giacomini OT (5th-6th rounder).
Overall I cant complain about the 5 UDFA's I landed in.

The New Orleans Saints picked up:
Shawn Murphy, G, Utah State -- ranked as the #3 guard by Sporting News, Dale Murphy's son is short on experience, long on potential.
Trevor Scott, DE, Buffalo -- a player I was considering in the 6th round, he's a very intriguing LB/DE tweener prospect with great measurables.
Jerome Felton, FB/RB, Furman -- 67 touchdowns in college, with the size to convert to fullback in the pros.
Marcus Griffin, FS, Texas -- the twin brother of Michael Griffin, who was drafted in the first round last year, Griffin is a two year starter at a major program who had 5 interceptions last year.
All in all, a good haul, although I'm disappointed that my Hefney bid got trumped.

Did I miss something? I put in for a few bargain basement guys in case they slid through the cracks. Im kind of curious to know if I got them.

Ah, I missed that. Oh well.
Seeing as no one put in a bid for Bradford and Boyd, feel free to claim them as your own. When they make it to the hall of fame in 2030, you'll have bragging rights.

I must be the unluckiest SOB in the UDFA. I got one of my picks. ONE. And I don't think my strategy was that bad. Here's who I bid on:
Steve Johnson, WR, Kentucky -- $25,000 -- Outbid by $1k
Rodrick Johnson, LB, Oklahoma State -- $20,000
Mike Gibson, OL, California -- $17,500 -- 2nd highest bidder
Jason Shirley, DT, Fresno State -- $15,000 -- 2nd highest bidder
Cody Wallace, C, Texas A&M -- $7,500 -- 2nd highest bidder
Alvin Bowen, LB/S, Iowa State -- $5,000 -- Outbid by $3k
Jonathan Hefney, S, Tennessee -- $5,000 -- Not close
Eric Foster, DE, Rutgers -- $5,000 -- Outbid by $1.5K
I got Rodrick Johnson. That's it. And I could have bid the minimum on him as well. Ah well, at least I can say my eye for talent is pretty good. Lots of folks agree with me!

Aren't there red flags concerning character issues?
Not enough to drop him into the UDFA period. He got arrested twice in 2006 (one was suspicion of DUI) but to my knowledge he has kept a clean nose since. I do know he lost his girlfriend to a car accident before the Missouri game last year.

Everybody should now be able to select one player that nobody picked. First come, first serve. Okay, I'll take Vincent Redd, OLB, Liberty. ;D

And thats why it shouldnt be private bids. You think its all a gamble hell no the agents talk to several teams and Im sure they dont tell some well so and so offered us more.

I understand that this is an easy way to finish the mock draft, but it is really not the way UDFA goes at all. The Players and agents consider a lot more than cash and a lot of agents say its much better to go UDFA than get drafted in the 7th. They look to go to a team where they have a chance of making the final roster and actually getting paid to play the first year, or at least can be a PS player for a team that needs depth. Opportunity is much more a deciding factor in UDFA than signing bonus, because it allows the player to earn MORE if they make the team or PS.

OK, next year let's actually call the players involved, and ask them where they'd like to play. Anything to make the experience more authentic....
Me: "Hello? Mike Gibson? This is...uh... ExpatFan from the Orangemane Mock draft?"
M.G.: "Ummm... yes?
Me: "Would you be interested in signing with the fake New Orleans Saints for a fake $20,000?"
M.G.: "Sorry, I just signed with this guy named Mediator12 -- he offered me $15,000, but I feel like I have a much better chance of making his fake roster."
Me: "How about $30,000 fake dollars?"
M.G.: "Get off the phone, you freak!" --click--

ROFL!
I guarantee he would have signed with me! Oh, and Craig Stevens too ;D
Seriously, there is no way to make it more authentic or I would have chimed in earlier with that idea before it started. It is just too difficult. I just wanted to point out the difference, not criticize the process....

The system might not be perfect, but still a whole lot better than the system we used in years before where you could just come in at the last minute and snipe someone΄s bid Ebay style.
