Well, here it is. The first major of the season. Looks like some the young turks (Immelman, Snedeker) are grabbing the opening rounds. Mickleson is climbing the board as well. Tiger Woods starts today 9 off the pace.
Here's the updated leader board:

I would have taken the field over Tiger. Doesn't matter though, as Sunday comes the scores will starting getting worse. If Tiger is hanging around par that will probably not be that far off.

sadly not alot of masters discussion on the masters thread.
lets get back to it shall we?
phil missed TWO short putts for birdies (on 15 and 16) yesterday and STILL fired a 68 to get to 5 under.
yea, immelman and snedeker finished the day at -8 and -7 respectively (screwing some people out of making the cut given the 10 stroke rule) but does anyone really think they can keep up that insane pace?
or will they go justin rose and card a triple bogey....or two?
this tournament is phil's to win unless tiger somehow fires a 66 or 67 today...
.....which of course is entirely possible. after all, it is saturday.
so, where are the rest of the golf fans?

Stephen Ames is a guy I will be watching today. He has been hanging around late in a lot of majors lately. I would agree Phil is easily the favorite and the leader board should start coming back down today and tommorow.

Phil just got robbed on 6 with bogey, and his 1st since 14 on thursday.
Brandt, from Vandy, is playing well. I mean the guy chiped off the green yesterday and holed it. Impressive.

I love Masters week. I think Tiger is all but out of it unless he makes a monster move on the back 9, and his game this week hasn't shown any signs of a monster move all week. If Phil shoots a 70 or better today, he'll have a very good chance tomorrow. Don't count out Snedecker, Casey, and Immelman though; all those kids have the game to win this thing.
OOHH. Phil just got jobbed by hitting the flagstick on #8. That's a tap in birdie of it doesn't bounce off the stick.

had phil's ball not hit the pin it wouldve tucked within a couple feet and possibly even gone in.
a definate 2 stroke swing, and the later bogey that followed affirmed that it indeed affected his psyche.

That's interesting, and true now that I think about it.
Tiger's never come from behind to win a major, and the kids out in front have the luxury of not having to play in the same group as Tiger.
Snedecker and Immelman will get to play together in the same group again, and that should add another level of comfort for them. Immelman will be trying to make history by being the first player ever to shoot in the 60s all four days. I'm expecting a 70 at best from him. If he manages that, Tiger would need a 64 to put him in a playoff. That's a tall order even for Tiger.
I think that Snedecker and Immelman may run off and hide, and turn it into match play down the stretch.

Tiger has never come from behind and won. I don't know why anybody expects him to do it. That was Jack's specialty, not Tiger's. Tiger has always been the kind of player who grabs an early lead and then holds onto it.

never say never
I'm not saying he can't do it. I'm just saying he hasn't done it yet. Actually, I'd like to see him do it. It would be a hell of a lot more fun to watch. That's why I used to enjoy watching Jack Nicklaus so much. He would put on the pressure until the guys in front of him crumbled. Like Elway. There's something about the "come from behind" victory that everybody loves.

The difference is that in majors now the leaderboard does not keep climbing. It comes back to the field. He does not even have to play great to win. He post two under that could be good for a playoff. Its bound to happen one of these days. Immelman is due to shoot mid seventies.

Immelman will have to play bogey golf, which he has hardly done in 3 rounds. If he can survive the pressure, he'll win unless Tiger plays lights out and plays almost 180 degrees from the 1st three rounds.

04-13-2008, 11:41 AM
The greens will still be soft, soft greens mean confidence, and that's a big deal. So the top guys on the leaderboard can stay at even par easily, and attack some greens. That means the guys that are chasing will have to take chances. How that will work out, who knows? I'd expect to see Immelman shoot one under, and that will win it.

Nobody, major experience or not stays at par easily, especially in sixty degree weather with 20-30 mile per hour winds on Masters Sunday. Flag hunting will not be the norm.

I don't see Immelman and Snedecker posting 75 or 76. The Masters isn't like other Majors that set up the course as hard as they can on Sunday. Tradition at the Masters is to set up the course to play fairly easy on Sunday. Someone would have to fold completely for -7 to win this thing.
