Per profootballtalk.com
The on-again, off-again, on-again, off-again talks between the New York Jets and the Denver Broncos could be on, again.
Tom Rock of Newsday expects a trade to come on draft weekend, possibly for a second-day draft pick. Per Rock, the Broncos and defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson already have a contract in place.
And the contract is the key component of the equation, given that the Jets owe Robertson a roster bonus of $3 million in early June and a base salary in excess of $6 million for 2008, the final year of his rookie contract.
From Robertson’s standpoint, the smarter move move might still be to force the Jets to cut him in June, making him an unrestricted free agent.
From the Broncos’ perspective, showing interest in another underachieving one-time top-ten defensive lineman isn’t surprising.

We need to link to more blogs that bald jet fans run too.
I saw at another site that theres a rumor that has NYJ trading down with a team in the top 15, which is kind of interesting if the Broncos do actually have a deal in place with Robertson. I think I remember one of the outlets saying it would be a draft day deal. Makes you wonder if theres more to the deal than just Robertson.

Interesting rumor, but I can't really see the Broncos moving up to #6 for anyone right now. Though it would explain why they would be holding up the Robertson deal until the draft. Perhaps they want to guarantee that a guy like Dorsey, Ellis or maybe even McFadden is there before they pull the trigger.
Jets' 6th pick + Robertson for Denver's #12 this year and their #1 next year?

But if we're bringing in Robertson who would we theoretically be trading up for?
The 6th pick is worth 1600, the 12th pick is worth 1200. #42 is worth 480. Assuming Foxy is valued as a middle 3rd and Robertson as a middle 5th, they'd each be worth about 185 and 35 respectively, or an additional 150 point gap.
If we sent 12 and swapped Foxy for Robertson thats 1350 in chart value, or a difference of 250. It would seem like an ideal way to recoup an early 3rd, but the Jets traded theirs away to get Jenkins. Maybe their 4th and an '09 2nd rounder? The Jets look to be in a pretty obvious "go for it now" mode with all the FA money they've spent. Adding the extra pick in the top 50 and getting a starting quality safety in Foxworth is probably worth a little overpay by them.
But who do we want so bad that we'd give up our only other pick in the first three rounds to move up after?
McFadden? Not definitely going to be there and I think you could make a strong argument that Mendenhall (at #12), Stewart (maybe at #42?), or a 4th round RB like Choice or Kevin Smith would be a better fit for our offense.
Vernon Gholston would be just another situational DE in our defense.
Clady? I'd hate taking him that high, I'd rather get Chris Williams at #12 and that idea doesn't thrill me. Plus as screwy as it is, Clady could go as high as #2 to STL or #5 to KC.
Only Ellis or Dorsey would be a good value pick but also likely to be at #6, and that'd seem like a real funny move if we're getting an expected starting DT in Roberston in the same move. I'd actually be for it though, its time we addressed DT heavy like we've already done with some success at CB and DE.
Still leave some weaknesses on the OL though, and it'd be hard to address them without another pick until the 4th round.
Doing something like this would probably be a good long term move, but '08 could be a very rough season. Next year's OT class should be pretty damn good itself with Oher, Monroe, Boone, and Loadholt all having elite potential though. In fact, the MLB class with Laurinaitis and Maulauga headlining looks much better as well.
If we did something like this I think it'd be the FO calling '08 a punt year where they can get a few more pieces nailed down (trying Niko out at MLB, loading up on DT, and seeing what we've got in Harris, Kuper, and Pears) before replacing what we still need and looking to get competitive again in '09.

1st there is no reason why Denver should be paying that kind of money for a RB. Every year is the same bull$)*%, trade for a RB in the top 5. Denver has much greater needs in the DL and OL. You improve the OL, and the RB's will score within the 5 yd line. McFadden will do nothing better inside the 5 with the OL as it was last yr. As to giving another first round to move up there...All I can hope is that no one at Dove Valley within earshot of such a suggestion. That is worthy a of the Redskins. BIG PASS on that one.

I agree completely; in fact, I couldn't be more entrenched in the "trade down" side. I'm just trying (like Drek above) to make any sense of the rumor lex through out there. There's nobody that I believe would be available at 6 that I would like significantly more than what might be there at 12......but perhaps the Broncos brain trust disagrees.

I think it would be a contingency pick, depending on if a certain player (or players were available), otherwise it would be a straight up trade for Robertson. Thats assuming theres anything to this, which I question. And I really doubt we'd give up a 2nd this year. Its more likely to be a pick next year since I think Shanahan is in a position where he wants to win now. And honestly, if our first round pick next year is in the early 20s, I wouldnt have a problem with them using that pick for this. Its speculation though at this point. I doubt it happens.

Here is the exact post that I was referring to in the above post:
Jets | Team could look to trade down in draft
Thu, 10 Apr 2008 18:00:10 -0700
Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports the New York Jets could look to trade down in the 2008 NFL Draft. The Jets currently hold the No. 6 overall pick in the draft. The team could look to trade down to between No. 7 and No. 15 overall. They have discussed a trade with at least one team in that range.
