Uhhh, John - did you think for a minute, or are you running for office?

John Elway says he had no problem with Jay Cutler calling out a teammate last week. But it's not how the Broncos' legendary quarterback would have done it. He would have kept his conversation with Brandon Marshall behind closed doors.
"I was surprised to hear it, actually," Elway said Wednesday during his Colorado Crush Arena Football League news conference. "If that's what Jay feels like he needs to comment on, then he needs to do that. I mean, personally, I would have done it to (Marshall). To me, as teammates — even though I've tried to settle things in the press, looking back over the years, it's not been the right way to do it."
Upon being told what Elway said, Cutler said he was surprised his comments last week about
Marshall had gotten so much attention.
known it was going to be such a big story and get picked up by the national media like it did, I probably would have chosen my words a little more carefully," Cutler said.
"I think it's going to be a good thing for me and I think it's going to be a good thing for Brandon. I wouldn't have said what I did if I didn't care about him. I want to see him succeed. I think he's one of the most talented players in the league, and I'd hate to see him throw that all away."
Marshall is Cutler's favorite receiver, as evidenced by his team-high 102 catches last season.
Marshall and Cutler also have become friends off the field. In February, Cutler, Marshall and tight end Tony Scheffler worked out together with renowned trainer Chip Smith in Atlanta.
But on March 22, Marshall engaged in horseplay with his brother at their vacation home in Orlando, Fla. A wrestling match ended with Marshall slipping and putting his right arm into an entertainment center. He suffered multiple lacerations to his muscles, tendons, a nerve, vein and artery and underwent emergency surgery.
"People have to understand about Brandon Marshall and I. We go out to dinner together, we went to Atlanta together," Cutler said. "I've talked to Brandon about this many times. It's not like this is the first time he heard this from me. Everything I said in that press conference I've said to Brandon before. I don't think he was shocked to hear what I said. Maybe he was a little embarrassed, but hopefully it will help him."
Marshall has been involved in other off-field incidents, including a disturbance outside a downtown Denver nightclub the night teammate Darrent Williams was killed, a domestic violence charge that was later dropped and a DUI charge that is pending.
Cutler seemed at wit's end last week when he spoke about Marshall's latest incident.
"He's not my favorite person right now," Cutler said. "I support him, but it's always
Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler (John Leyba, The Denver Post)
something with him right now and you can't have that. It's disappointing."
Elway was asked if Cutler's public remarks about Marshall were a sign Cutler is ready to become the team's primary leader.
"We'll see. There's talk and there's do," Elway said. "The bottom line is there's talk and there's wins. And there's one thing that talks and that's wins, so we'll see."
Cutler's record with the Broncos is 9-12 since he took over as starter 11 games into the 2006 season.
"John can say what he wants," Cutler said. "I'm not about to disagree with John Elway, but I've said from Day One, we're not the same quarterback on or off the field."

Maybe (as a southstander said) - Elway can give Cutler some marriage advice next.

John is no longer on the team, but he knows what it takes to be a winner. If he had some advice for a young QB like Cutler i have ZERO problem with that. Just like when Jay gave his advice for Brandon he can take it under advisement or ignore it. Up to them both how they deal with it.

Elway probably knows very little about the dynamics of the personalities on the current team, but he can toss in his two cents like everyone else - especially when some sportswriter asks him.
The thing is that it still makes headlines in Denver whenever Elway farts, so here we are again.

Yea, to a degree. He had to do a lot of aerobics and stair climbing to catch Plummer's passes but yea he was effective at times.

I think this is a positive, John questions Jay and Denver backs Jay(for the most part). When John questioned Jake, Jake just had to take it. I think it is about time, and this shows we have finally moved on.

He was asked a ****ing question and Elway gave his OPINION. Much like you and everyone else that watches football. What John cannot answer any questions about what his opinion is, but people can come here and give their opinion every day no matter how asinine?

i love John, but when you start off your career with a defense with Pro Bowl talents like Dennis Smith, Karl Mecklenburg, Tommy Jackson, Louis Wright, Greg Kragen, Simon Fletcher, and Rulon Jones, its easy to talk junk about "wins are what talks" when your smothering defense is what is winning you the ballgames, ie Vince Young today.
John doesnt realize that with this current Broncos defense, it doesnt matter how hard a QB plays, You wont win ballgames (think back to 1994 and 1995 John).

Jay is on the football team, you realize that? Marshall is immature and there is no reason for Jay to instigate anything in the media with him. There is no benefit here.
All Elway said was that he had no problem with Jay doing saying it, but he never did it that way. And he didn't. It was amazing what came out about Reeves and El;way after Reeves was fired. You always knew there was tension but you never knew it from what they said to the media. Same with Anthony Miller. Elway hated his selfishness but never outed him in the media. That's just the way things are done.
I guess Cutler and Marshall are pretty good friends so this is probably no big deal.

John can say whatever he wants about the team. He's earned the right.
It's good to see that Jay is his own man and all... but he'd do well to listen to someone who had such a long career, always under the spotlight and made plenty of mistakes on the way.
What is Jay thinking by saying "if I knew this would get so much attention I'd chose my words more careful." He's the top position in the top sport on a premier team talking to the media.
You're not in Santa Clause land anymore Jay.

Agree.
Elway is a public figure. He's no longer a teammate. He's allowed to comment on things like this, and he's certainly earned the right to. They stuck a mic in his face and asked him... and he answered.
Elway also admitted to making plenty of these kinds of mistakes when he was younger. Said the whole thing is a learning experience.
There's really no story here.

... a lot like Jay did.
Yep ... both guys were just answering questions, Jay didn't call a press conference to call Marshall on the carpet, he was asked point blank about it in the course of speaking on other things.
Just like Elway.
Elway just gave his opinion too, nothing wrong with that, all though he seems not to have read or heard Jay say that he had talked to Marshall many times before giving him the same advice.
Its no big deal all around anyway, and Elway praised Jay for speaking his mind and starting to take on more of a leadership role.
Elway seems genuinely interested in sharing his experience and that's great. . And yes I've also noticed with John a slight bit of competitiveness as well ... in addition to supporting all the Denver QB's after him, he showed a subtle bit of competitiveness with Griese, with Jake and likely a little now with Jay too.
And its no mystery that Jay is the first real QB here with the tools to possibly match or even eclipse some of Elway's stature in Denver over the course of his career (only possibly at this point, of course and we all hope he can live up to the challenge).
Not to mention with Favre, when Brett broke Elway's total games won and passing TD records. Elway even acknowledged he was a little ticked off to lose those records and that is only natural as well from a guy with his competitive fire.
So whether a little of that competitive instinct also inspired him to give his two cents to the press when the opportunity arose, instead of directly to Jay as his own advice might suggest ... who knows?? ... In any event, they are all big boys and can take it, and its all no big deal to begin with, and no matter how great Jay becomes, Elway's place is secure in Broncoland regardless.
Jay and Marshall can all learn some things from the experience as well .. so I don't see any problems with any of this.
