Ellis improves numbers at USC Pro Day
By Frank Tadych | NFL.com

LOS ANGELES -- The annual USC Pro Day workout is well-known as a showcase for prospective NFL talent. On Wednesday, it again held up to its reputation.

Sedrick Ellis headlined a strong group of 25 pro prospects who worked out on the University of Southern California campus, displaying to NFL coaches and scouts why he's a likely top 10 selection in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Ellis showed up at the pro day workout weighing in at 297 pounds -- 11 lighter than he weighed at the combine. He felt he was too heavy in Indianapolis and wasn't satisfied with his performance, but helped himself by posting better numbers across the board at his pro day.

"I'm very proud of my day today, I felt like I did very well," said Ellis. "All my numbers went up. Nothing stayed the same or went down. I felt like I came out and showed great character. I'm just happy the way things have gone."

Ellis participated in all of the drills that were open to the media, with the exception of two agility drills. He ran 5.02 and 5.05 in the 40-yard dash, shaving more than 0.2 off his time from the combine. He said he improved by two repetitions in the bench press, reaching 36 reps of 225-pounds, and increased his vertical to about 30-inches.

All that's left is the draft.

"You know just as well as I do that [the draft] is kind of a crap shoot," Ellis said. "Who might trade up, who might trade down, who might not like you for whatever reason, who might like you. Right now it's a waiting process. I wish it was tomorrow."

Ellis said he has visits set up with three NFL teams, including Cincinnati and New Orleans, but isn't going to conduct workouts again for teams. One squad that could hold particular interest for Ellis is Oakland, which has the fourth overall pick.

"That would make me feel pretty good," Ellis said about landing with the Raiders. "They have the fourth pick, they're right there in Northern California, a hop, skip and a jump from home. They're a team I feel like I could help."

Representatives for 30 of the 32 NFL teams were in attendance. Washington and Denver were the only teams not represented.
Along with Ellis, several of the other Trojans who are projected in the top three rounds of the draft had solid workouts. Quarterback John David Booty, who also worked out at the combine, didn't participate in testing but threw during the individual drills.

Booty felt the biggest question he faced from NFL scouts was his ability to the throw deep ball.

"I feel really good," said Booty, who threw approximately 80 passes for scouts. "I was really pleased with the deep balls today. That's something that I really wanted to come out and show. … I really showed what I was capable of doing on the deep ball. If I answered any questions, they were there."

Linebacker Keith Rivers, projected by many as a first-round pick, worked out for scouts for the first time after missing the combine with an ankle injury. He posted impressive numbers, reaching 42-inches in the vertical jump and running 4.58 in the 40.

"I thought Booty threw the football extremely well, which he needed to, especially the deep ball, which he did," said NFL draft expert Mike Mayock. "Sedrick Ellis looked great … I think he really just solidified his case for being a top 10 pick. The story of the day was probably Keith Rivers."

Keith Rivers really improved on his Combine 40 time.

Im pretty sure Rivers skiped the Combine as the article stats due to a ankle. it wasnt a bad 40 though.

Did he? I thought I read somewhere he ran in the 4.6-4.7 range. Guess not..

This line of thinking annoys me. The broncos dont draft every player whose work out they don't attend. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. If they were really keying in on one of those guys and were trying to play aloof, dont you think they'd SEND someone if 30 other teams were going?

Chauncey Washington also ran a 4.35. Impressive and a good sign on a guy that could be a big steal.

I also understand that he is dumb as bag of rocks and has person issue.

I see a USC player as a Bronco after the draft. Same thing happened with Cutler.

The staff likes Keith Rivers in a big way. They really do.

The fact that Denver wasn't represented at the Pro Day just confirms, for the moment, my fears he will be the Bronco pick.

I can't tell you the precise reasoning, I can only tell you with some certainty that Rivers...for whatever reason...has rocketed up the Bronco board & could be their selection @ 12...assuming he's still on the board.

Now, understand, this is April 3rd.

Things change, trades happen, priorities shift as might happen if your #1 receiver were a real knucklehead and slipped on a paper bag into a t-v screen for example...you know, something impossible like that.

You should just mind your own business. Don't question Brandon's magic bullet theory version 1.2

It was just a freak accident

He will be 100 percent by training camp

I would be fine w/Ellis being drafted at # 12.....

Would not be ok w/Rivers at the same spot...

Here's one take (The Huddle):

Keith Rivers LB USC

STRENGTHS
Keith has good size and speed to be an excellent OLB at the next level. He is a head up, wrap up, squeeze and drive type tackler who has the athleticism to play any of the LB positions. He shows leadership qualities and loves to make the big play. Keith is an excellent all around football player. His best attribute is his burst to the ball. He shows great quickness to change direction, has excellent cover skills and can rush the passer with the best of them. Keith is a perfect fit for the cover two defense that requires the MLB, on passing downs, to have the athleticism to cover the middle of the field with quick cover skills.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE
Keith is not a meet, greet and shed LB, against the run. He will need some big boys up front to allow him to run to the ball and make plays. He lacks the lower body strength and his body type does not lend itself to adding any more strength than he has right now. To summarize, he does not have enough junk in his trunk!

TALENT BOARD ROUND 1
Keith reminds me a lot of Jonathan Vilma (LB New Jersey Jets) and Takeo Spikes (Philadelphia Eagles). Like Jonathan & Takeo, Keith’s impact position at the next level will be as a weak side OLB in a 4-3 defense. He will impact if a team that uses this system drafts him but I suspect, like Vilma & Spikes, he will be less impacting in a 3-4 defense. Taking on big offensive guards in the running game is not Keith’s strength. He can get swallowed up really easy and neutralized when he gets leaned on by those types of players that are the size of more than one human being. I can see some teams who play a 4-3 cover two system, looking at Keith as a possible middle LB. The teams with big boys up front like the Ravens and Panthers might be looking really hard at Keith because he is such a strong tackler, takes good angles and does a solid job on passing downs. It makes sense for those teams to rate Keith maybe a little higher than some others. However, make no mistake, Keith has first round talent and all teams should be looking at him at some point in the first round. I call him Keith (Passing Down) River because passing downs are the downs that will show off his abilities to impact.

So we finally get DJ back at Will and we're going to go draft another Will in the 1st round? Sigh...

I'm always a proponent of taking the best player available, but I just know that if Rivers is taken that either: DJ won't be resigned and Rivers will simply step in and replace him after this season; or the more likely scenario, that DJ or Rivers plays out of position.

I wouldn't go too far into thinking they'll be drafting a LB in the first round. We'll be going with an offensive lineman.

Morons. Vilma made his name as a MLB in a 4-3 defense.

If Rivers is our pick at #12 I will blow a gasket. It is only April 4th and this is just speculation- but this would just be a downright retarded move w/the acquisition of Boss, Niko, and then the perpetual screw job DJ has faced in the last 3 years as a Bronco.

If Rivers is the pick- then I seriously question "the plan" of the "mastermind." I'm not a poster who goes "Postal", but this pick would do it for me. In times that are trying even for the most ardent and true Broncos fan, this would be a huge punch to the gut.

I want to see the Best player available at #12 out of Clady, Williams, Dorsey/Ellis should they fall, Albert, Mendenhall, or Stewart....

NFL.com is projecting Rivers to be a MLB not OLB. He could work in with Niko or play 3rd downs as a coverage guy. I wouldnt mind the pick, but if we pass on Clady for him, I'll implode.
