Hey, i'm in silversprings MD for the week -

but i am planning on taking a train home (i didn't drive - and i'm on a contract) - and i was wondering if any OM members can tell me how either expensive or difficult it would be to get a rail line to PHI?

Thanks,

Amesj

Not sure exactly where Silver Springs is in MD, but Amtrak runs from BWI airport (not sure if there are other stations in Maryland). From there to Philly the train would be about $50.

There may be regional options that will be cheaper, but the easiest way to get to Philly from Silver Spring is to take the Metro to Union Station in DC (both stations are on the red line, so you won't have to switch) and hop on Amtrak from there. Metro will cost about $2 give or take. Amtrak's about $60-70 for a regional train or $100-150 for the Accela, depending upon time and availability.

Yup. This is true. Or jump on the Acela for a hun (one way). Or for an extra $30 head up to Penn Station .... in the basement of MSGarden and do the big apple.

Rep this guy Clav! This sounds money. Of course you should consider a rental car as it's about a 3 hr trip by car and the quoted train fares above are only one way fares. Look at Thrifty.

Well....Here's the deal:

I'm around HBG, PA - but i car pooled with someone - but i have a friend in PHI and i'm looking to maybe hop a train, spend a night with her and come back home to MID (sorry using amtrak codes) on sunday.

So...basically since i carpooled with someone the trip to PHI from MD/DC is "personal".

I can swing the train ticket cost wise - i was just wondering how difficult it would be to get to one (train station). I'm finishing up a move (that's what i'm here for) on saturday soooo.... i'm not sure what time i'm done - i just know i'm done saturday.....

EC & Anubis & antilles - lol - do you know of anyone out here i could pay to taxi me... lol

I don't need the accela - so a regional rail is fine. Just this is sorta a spontaneous thing - so i don't know "how" or "what" i need to do to get to the train station. Once i'm @ amtrak - i'm good to go.

Doing what? You'll have to explain what that means to me. You mean like Mr. Ed?

You wouldnt have to pay me to take you too the station. But i wonder if you could still get to your destination using the Baltimore Amtrak. I just think using that one is far easier and less hassle than driving through D.C which is a bitch.

You've got a few options. My first suggestion would be to try to find a bus line out of D.C. You can take the Metro from Silver Spring to Metro Center or Chinatown and there should be a bus service running from there to Philly but you may have to stop in Baltimore first. You're best bet for finding that bus service is to simply Google it.

As far as the train goes, you can take the Metro from Silver Spring to Union Station and should be able to catch a train that way. Probably more expensive than the bus but should be quicker.

Last option, and most timely, would be to take the Metro to Reagen, hop a shuttle service to BWI (approx. 45 min. drive in no traffic - good luck) and catch the train from either BWI to Philly or hop a cab ride from BWI to Penn Station for a train to Philly.

I found greyhound runs from Silver Spring to PHI - so i think i may go that route. I like trains better - but it's like $40 and about 2.5hours.

That's ideal, I think their pickup spot is at the Silver Spring metro station. I used to hang around that area quite a bit, watch your wallet bud.

Yea, just be careful in that area. Can be shady in some areas but its great you found a ride out there.

I'm alright in the shady areas.... Not saying i'm a big tough guy - but i have spent a portion in some "rough" areas in my time.
