DRAFT PROSPECT BENEDICT DIES

Posted by Mike Florio on March 26, 2008, 11:09 p.m.

Heath Benedict, an offensive lineman who played at Newberry College and who was expected to be a mid-round draft choice in 2008, died on Wednesday.

Benedict, 25, played initially at Tennessee and then transferred to the Division II school. The Sporting News draft guide had Benedict ranked as the ninth-best guard in the class, and projected him to be a fourth-round selection.

A source with knowledge of the situation says that police have ruled out foul play. Published reports indicate that drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as well.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police say 21-year-old Heath Benedict was found dead on his couch Wednesday evening in his Villages of San Jose home. They do not suspect that any drugs or alcohol were involved in his death, or that foul play is suspected.

Benedict, a 6'6, 333 pound football player, was an offensive lineman for Newberry College in South Carolina after he was red shirted at the University of Tennessee, according to the school's Web site.

The site also says that Benedict, originally from the Netherlands, played high school football in New Jersey.

According to NFL Draft Dog, Benedict also had an unofficial workout with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006.

Police have not released any further details about Benedict's death

Very sad. He was a good, young, solid player. Reminds me a little of the Arkansas OG from about 8-10 years ago who died in a car crash before he ever played in a game. I think he was drafted by the Colts.

Just a shame. RIP.

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- College offensive lineman Heath Benedict was found dead in his Florida home Wednesday night, apparently of natural causes, according to broadcast reports.

Two television stations in Jacksonville, Fla., reported on their Web sites that homicide detectives were called to Benedict's home about 7 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they found Benedict, 24, dead on his couch.

Police told the television station they did not suspect foul play, drugs or alcohol in Benedict's death. Benedict's body was taken to the medical examiner, according to the TV report.

Benedict, a native of the Netherlands, transferred to Newberry, an NCAA Division II school, for the 2004 season after redshirting at Tennessee as a freshman in 2002. Sporting News' Draft '08 guide ranked Benedict (6-foot-6 and 335 pounds) as the ninth-best player at the guard position in this year's draft class. He was projected as a fourth-round selection.

I'm sure it was something. Despite what the article says, 24 year old athletes don't often just die of natural causes.

It's not like this is new. So many of these young guys put on a lot of weight and have heart attacks int their twenties. I remember that lineman from Utah that passed away during the San Fran preseason game a few years ago.

Roids don't kill quickly. Unless he messed up with slin. Bodybuilders don't have heart attacks as much as they have, kidney, liver failure. It takes more years for heart problems to occur.

Not true. It all depends on the dosage one is taking along with any other chemicals in the body. Heart problems do take longer to occur (mid 40's) but it can happen early as well.

Is true-I have been on BBer message boards for about 7 years now. I have watched people who do incredeble doses live to this day. The people who do die most times die of Liver, Kidney problems. The few heart problems I have seen took years to develop. Not saying it could not be the heart, but if it is I doubt Steroids would be a culprit.

How in the world is this possible when he was still in college??

NFL | Benedict's cause of death determined
Fri, 11 Apr 2008 12:54:27 -0700

John Murphy, of Yahoo! Sports, reports Newberry OL Heath Benedict's cause of death was sudden Cardia Disrhythmia, according to a Jacksonville, Fla. coroner. Benedict also suffered from Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The final Toxicology exam showed that no significant drugs or substances were found in his body, except caffeine, which the coroner said indicated he probably had either a cup of coffee or coca cola shortly before his death.
