Nick Ferguson (Post file)Nick Ferguson was at a point in life where he needed his old friends.

Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak were there for him. A starting strong safety for most of the previous five seasons with the Broncos, Ferguson signed a one-year contract Wednesday with the Houston Texans, whose administrative hierarchy is stacked with former Broncos' Smith and Kubiak.

"Nick's healthy and excited to be working again for coach Kubiak and for Rick Smith," said Jack Reale, Ferguson's agent.

Ferguson's departure leaves the Broncos with only five starting players — John Lynch, Tom Nalen, Champ Bailey, D.J. Williams and Domonique Foxworth — from their 2005 AFC title game.

Ferguson, 33, missed the final six games of the 2006 season with a knee injury, but returned to the starting lineup for seven of the first eight games of 2007. He was replaced early in that eighth game at Detroit by Hamza Abdullah, who started the rest of the season.

A walk-on at Georgia Tech and an undrafted rookie in 1996, Ferguson was brought to Denver in 2002 at the recommendation of Smith, who was then the Broncos' director of pro personnel. Now the Texans' general manager, Smith again added Ferguson to his roster that is coached by Kubiak, the Broncos' former offensive coordinator.

I cant blame Kubes for picking up people he likes off our squad that we dont take care of. If we wanted him back enough we would have paid him first.

I wish Fergy the best. He was a great guy, great teammate and a very underrated player.

Not only that but he was really fun at Broncos camp. He interacted with the crowd and was a guy that just seemed like he enjoyed being a football player. Granted he wasn't the best safety, he sure was a good find for an UDFA. Good luck Nick!

With Foxy and Paymah being drafted the same year, wouldn't he count too?

I don't see how it is. The Broncos are in a rebuilding mode after all, right?

I always liked Fergy, especially as a backup/STer. He'll be a good fit there in a reserve role.

Foxy started his rookie year? He's certainly not a starter now.

Stupid way to phrase it....but technically it is correct.

He started the AFC Title Game because D-Will was injured. Not meaning to disrespect Foxy but I feel if D-Will was healthy we may have won that game. They picked on Foxy early and often in that game and I kept thinking that D-Will would've made a play on one of those.

A different GM, a couple of D coordinators and who can count how many coaches we havebeen through in the same time frame. Makes you wonder.

Man, that seems a decade ago...DWILL WOULD of made a plAY IN THAT GAME...He fought thru a serious groin pullbut was too crippled to play that game.

I used to like when Fergie stood his ground and made sure Ladainian Tomlinson ran around him instead of through him when he scored his goal line TD's...over and over and over again...

Fergie was another good back up ST type player that for some unknown reason ended up starting for us for a few years...IMO he was a good character guy, but nothing more then a depth, ST player..

If Shanny could somehow luck into fielding a team of starters one day, look out super bowl cause here we come...

The guy served well here in spite of marginal talent. Best of luck in Houston, now let's hope mccree and manuel can upgrade the position.

The Houston Broncos? The Denver Broncos South? They stole our TEAM! They took Rick Smith, the man that should be our GM right now, and they took our offense! BOO TEXANS! BOOOOOOO!!!

yea maybe, but remember the biggest reason we lost that game was the d-line.
roethlisberger (who looked downright AWFUL in the superbowl) was made to look like montana (elway never had that kinda time) out there. he dropped back, ate a picnic lunch, took a nap, and still had some time to kill before finding a receiver.

if we generate ANY pressure on him that day we would now have (lucky) 7 afc championships and a VERY different view of one jake plummer.
damn shame it all worked out as it did.
