Nothing we didn't know......

Mical (Austin): Denver is sitting quietly with 9 picks in the draft. What do you see them doing with all of these choices?

SportsNation Mel Kiper: (1:35 PM ET ) They have as many needs as any team in the NFL right now. They are loaded with issues. Denver has a lot of problems right now. They have a big need at LT. You need another WR. Marshall right now is injured. He has a hand injury. Stokley is a slot guy. You need a WR, whether Marshall is injured or not right now. You need DT help. You need another LB. And you need a safety. Denver has had a lot of success drafting RBs down in the draft. Selvin Young saved them last year in that Buffalo game.

We are paying for it. Last year it was 7 and 9 and out of the playoffs for the 2nd year. For 2008, we pay for it literally. $7 increase in tickets for South Stands.

How insightful do you think he can be in a 15 second sound bite?

Oh yeah...his two carries for 7 yards were huge in that game.

yeah, its a written chat format, but its funny because he writes like he speaks. He's obviously knowledgable, he just needs to lay off the crack

Over the years, I had thought that he was someone "to listen to" when it came to drafting and the college players, etc. What seems to be the case is that he does well with the obvious choices, but he begins to falter when the draft doesn't go exactly as he planned it.

In theory, he knows his stuff. But in practice, I think he misses the same as any other "observer". However, he does know the names of the college players and that is more than I know. In the final analysis, I listen to him with a grain of salt tucked firmly between cheek and gum.....

He's good for a laugh, that's for sure.

I don't think I'll ever forget his undying Mike Williams hype, Reggie Bush worship/Houston ridicule, and his Ted Ginn/Brady Quinn freak out.

Who in the hell is Mel Kiper, anyway? I mean, here's a guy who criticizes everybody, whoever they take. He's got the answers to who you should take, to who you shouldn't take. He tells us about your team. He tells us about the Rams. He tells us about Tampa and everything else. In my knowledge of him, he's never even put on a jockstrap, he's never been a player, he's never been a coach, he's never been a scout, he's never been an administrator, and all of a sudden, he's an expert. He's in our paper two days ago, telling us who we have to take. We don't have to take anybody that Mel Kiper says we have to take. Mel Kiper has no more credentials to do what he's doing than my neighbor, and my neighbor's a postman and he doesn't even have season tickets to the NFL."

He is knowledgable, but I think very unrealistic about our #12 pick. He has us taking Clady, when from everything I've read, he prolly won't drop past the Falcons at 3 (if Long is gone), the Chefs at 5, or at the latest the Ravens at 8. He hasn't announced it yet, but Ogden is retiring.

Denver is a team with a lot of needs right now. If you ask me they have needs and they will be drafting to fill those needs that they have a lot of. They could use another RB, TE, G, T, C, QB, GM, PR Guy, Punter, DT, DE, MLB, OLB, CB, and depth at Safety is a need. Also Paul Ernster totally bailed them out last season.

I don't think we are that bad off except in special teams right now. If Colbert can work on his hands and be a 60 catch a year number 2 and Marshall and Stokely are at full strength plus complimented by a strong running game and a bad ass TE and that offense looks pretty good if they can get a solid LT or is Harris is the real deal.
On D supposedly Niko was starting calibur if not for him being behind a pro bowler in seattle. Boss is at least a decent upgrade from Gold and DJ is back to his comfort zone on the weak side. Get some depth and that unit is fine. Our Safety issues are solved for the year at least, and Corner is definitely not a problem if Moss and Crowder can live up to their potential and help out Doom pass rush is there, especially if Thomas can continue to improve and if he gets help.

Truthfully we need tackles on both sides of the ball depth at receiver and LB. We are not really in that bad of a situation from how i see it.

He batted that ball out of bounds ... saved a turnover late in the game. But that wasn't the game-winner.

Yahoo's latest Mock has Denver takling Clady too.

12. Denver (7-9)
The Pick: Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St.*
The buzz: The Broncos must protect young quarterback Jay Cutler's blind side. Clady may be the best pure left tackle in this fine class.

I think it comes down to who KC picks. A lot of these experts are having the Chefs select DT's Ellis and Dorsey. I know they need help at DT worse than Denver , but they are also in desperate need at OT. If they take a DT or OT will probably shape who Denver selects. I would love for Ellis to fall to 12.

I am fine with Clady ... if Dorsey and Ellis are gone, AND: if Ryan Harris can play RT. But I think Harris is a LT, and is our LT of the future. Nobody here wants to call Harris the "LTOTF," but there is substantial evidence he is just that.

Our Safety issues are solved for the year at least,

I don't know about that and why not get some insurance because at this point we have little to no depth at safety, Lynch is no spring chicken and what we have on hand I hate.

I think Kiper hit it on the head as far as our needs. I think Harris hurt his chances as the absolute heir apparent to LT by getting hurt. Set off a subtle alarm. No matter what it's always "interesting" to see what Shanahan does in the first round

It's not that often that a bevy of top tier OT's become available in the draft combined with a drafting position to land one.

It would be, in my very humble opinion, very unwise for Denver to pass up this chance.

Uhhh... we have four safeties with starting experience... one a perennial pro-bowler albeit with age, one with great upside and two solid players.
