I have already got my BlackBerry set for the game tomorrow. I would say that is pretty productive, right???

Early in Spring, it looked like Baker was walking away with the 2B job. Nix wasn't hitting anything, and Baker was crushing the ball while playing decent defensively.
I'm excited for the year. Can't wait, got tickets to the Rockies opening day, flying in the thursday before the game. Gonna be a blast :)

I saw that Steve Phillips didn't pick the Rockies to even make the post season this year. All he talked about in the NL West was how great the Padres would be with Peavy and Maddux. Also, about how great the Dodgers would be with the addition of Joe Torre. You know, the man who had the highest payroll in baseball throughout his managerial tenure. I don't get all of the love. You should win it all every year with an All Star team. Anyways, woke up and saw the same thing this morning on First Take. Let's shock them again Rocks.

A lot of talk is the Rockies are "One year wonders" who got "lucky" at the end of last season.
They are right there in competition though.

I think they got a huge shaft/lack of respect when zero opening week games are being nationally televised. Well, I guess they don't have a favorable matchup compared to other games, but that kinda irked me.

Well they have a lot of things working against them. Not an east coast team. Don't have flamboyant players. Didn't acquire a major player in the off season (Mets-Santana). Either way, I think they will be there in the end. Eventhough I would of loved for the Rockies to win it all last year, I was just happy to see them in the post season again. What is funny is that for the most part Rockies fans were just happy that their team was playing in the post season, while teams like the Red Sox and Yankees have fans that pi** and moan if they don't win it all.

I was so freakin excited when they won the NLCS. That was amazing. That was such a joy and I honestly cried because I never thought I'd see the Rockies amount to any success, and it was such a joy to see them actually win something.
For the World Series, I thought maybe they could pull it off, but deep down, I knew they were inferior to Boston and would most likely lose. But it was amazing watching that team play in late October.

And this year, the offense will be unbelievable if everybody is healthy. Defense will be top notch. Pitching I'm iffy on though. Hopefully it turns out like last year though.

I didn't think they were inferior to the group from Boston, but were less experienced, particularly among the pitching staff. Tulo still made some stirling plays that should have given the Eastern Press some pause to reconsider their ROY vote.....

Didn't like your NL West Divisional pick, but I do like how you selected Kershaw for NL ROY.

TheChamp24

There is no way 2 teams from the NL Central make the playoffs. The wildcard is going to be an 88+ win team, and I don't see any NL Central team compiling more than 86 wins.

Kershaw is a bold ROY pick too. He would have to pitch amazing if he gets called up, which would probably be May at its earliest.

Jake Peavy scattered three hits over seven innings in a 4-0 San Diego win over Houston. "Call a real cop!" struck out four, and drove in 2 runs.

Roy Oswalt was yanked from the game after throwing 114 pitches in 5 1/3 innings.

Don't forget that Peavy also drove in the first Padres run of the season. Not a bad outing. Not bad at all.

Bedard was in trouble all day, but JJ Putz came in and tipped the scales in the M's favor. Bedard always starts out a little cold. I'm looking forward to him warming up.

Yeah...some Madres fans such as myself sometimes refer to Peavy as "Call a real cop!"...due to a silly confrontation he had with an airport cop in Alabama. He actually drove in the first two runs.

Gagne is a shell of what he was with the Dodgers.

I'm not exactly expecting a sub 2 ERA, 45 saves and 100 K's from him.
I got him late, in a deep draft, like round 17ish I think. He pitched amazing for Texas last year.
I drafted him expecting him to get 35-40 saves with a 3ish ERA. He's my #3 closer in that league behind Corpas and Isringhausen.

Atkins off to another slow start I see.
1st inning, runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs, pops up in foul territory to Pujols on a 2-1 pitch.
3rd inning, runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs, grounds out to the pitcher.

TheChamp24

Oh, this is classic.
Watching the DBacks-Reds game on MLB.tv, Edwin Encarnacion up with runners on 1st and 2nd, down 5-3 in the bottom of the 9th with 0 outs. Reds ask him to bunt, and after 1 horrible attempt, count goes to 1-1, and then it was a hanging breaking ball, he makes one of the worst attempts I have ever seen a MLB make on a bunt attempt, count goes to 1-2.
One of the Reds announcers says that you need to be able to bunt in that situation, and if the guy can't, take him out and let someone else do it. Then says Encarnacion is not a clutch player, never has been and that he should've been taken out of the game if he can't bunt.
So, next pitch, and Encarnacion drills a line drive over the LF wall for a game winning 3 run homerun. The Reds announcer turns speachless. lol <!--IBF.ATTACHMENT_8228524-->

Well, considering how slow he started last year, its like deja vu. Just hope that isn't the case, because if Atkins doesn't hit, that means Holliday will see less prime pitches.

I'm sure it upset him, but it certainly didn't effect him when he went right through the top of Houston's order on Tuesday. He simply wasn't spotting his pitches last night. Any time he's off with his location...he's basically throwing BP. He got the first two, and had Cruz, Jr. at 1-2...lost him...and the flood gates opened. He'll bounce back.

It also came out that he needed surgery on his right elbow after last season...and it effected him down the stretch. Hoffman didn't reveal that info...the Madres did.

yeah it was only postponed for 20 minutes or so. They played the review of the 88' World Series for the Fans while the game was on hold. Dodgers lost 2-1 to the midgets, so there goes the sweep.

Meanwhile we might get to see the pitching excellence of Chan Ho Park who got called up today.:giggle:

Couldn't be worse than Bombko or Hendrickson aka The Lurch last year.

Dewitt is very surprising, I remember LB52 telling me he might be something in the Bigs, but honestly he wasn't supposed to be playing at this level yet. So it's nice to see him step up for a 23 yr. old. Plus the Hiroki Kuroda era starts tomorrow vs the Madres.

3 hits today. Does that mean he's off to a fast start now? See why it's ridiculous to base things on two games played? You have to give a major league player at least 50 ABs before you can say anything about how he's playing.

You guys are fags!

I understand the sentiment though...as the Madres have been dancing a jig all over the Dahyers for the past few years.

I'm interested to see what Kuroda has tonight. I can't wait until Mark Prior is in the fourth or fifth spot...Germano is too up and down, but he's a gamer.

I'm in Denver, and went to the game tonight (best baseball seats I ever had, by the way - front row, eight seats from the home dugout).

Some random thoughts:

-The Rockies are pressing, big time. Tulo screamed after his late ground out, then just stopped and stared up into the sky for a good minute.

-Helton is swinging the bat like he was in 2004 and before. It's early, but I could see him having a monster year.

-Kip Wells is going to be a bad signing. I already can't stand him.

-Same with Vizcaino.

-One thing that's pretty great is these guys being willing to sign autographs before the game. Helton came and signed a bunch tonight. Spilbourghs signed a bunch (including one for my son). Jason Hirsh signed a bunch. In some cases, they were signing just before and after the national anthem.

-He didn't play tonight, but Yorvit seems absolutely lost at the plate so far. Ianetta was stroking it tonight, despite the fact that it resulted in no hits. He was still hitting it hard.

-I understand why Jayson Nix is starting at 2nd base. I just hope they'll give Barmes an honest chance to compete for some playing time. Tonight, one at bat, one long triple.

-Viscaino went on the DL today. That's good. There's no way I could watch him suck like he has so far.

-The error on Kip Wells tonight. Embarrassing. A little league play. It cost a meaningless run, but that's not the point. You can't make plays like that and have people take you seriously.

There was a lot of off season talk of trying to move him due to the fact that the Bucs have a phenom @ AAA and no place to play him in the OF. X's overall performance since his arrival coupled with LaRoche's refusal to do a long term deal has pretty much closed down that talk, since X can also play 1B. Bay had a bit of Javon Walker like behavior in the off season as well that didn't exactly endear him to the new FO and both he and LaRoche have had bad starts to the season thus far...either one (or both) could go if this stays status quo come July.

Anyways, looks like X has played himself off the trading block....which I think is great because I really like him as a player. The new FO personel in Pittsburgh are all former Indians guys, so they're trying to do that "sign everyone valuable to cheap long term deals" thing. They already locked up Sanchez, Snell & Capps, it wouldn't bother me in the least to see X get one of those as well.

Went to the home opener, watched the weekend series, and good grief, it seems like they have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Kinda like the World Series all over again.

-Helton is swinging the bat like he was in 2004 and before. It's early, but I could see him having a monster year.

He is stroking those inside pitches for homeruns/doubles now. Love it. Hopefully it keeps up and he can have a .320 - 30+ HR's - 100+ RBI's season

-Kip Wells is going to be a bad signing. I already can't stand him.

-Same with Vizcaino.

I know man, I hated the signings. Wells was horrible in spring and lucky to be on the team. Vizcaino is a downgrade from Hawkins big time too.

-One thing that's pretty great is these guys being willing to sign autographs before the game. Helton came and signed a bunch tonight. Spilbourghs signed a bunch (including one for my son). Jason Hirsh signed a bunch. In some cases, they were signing just before and after the national anthem.

I've always loved how Helton usually signs for a couple minutes before/after the National Anthem, every game since he came up it seems. Totally nice to his hometown fans. I've heard out of town, he isn't as nice to the fans, meaning he doesn't sign a whole lot.
I really wish more baseball players would sign autographs. I used to collect them, from like 1997-2004ish, got a ton of good guys, but it would be so frustrating because a lot of them would refuse to sign. A lot of the young guys coming up are especially bad, it seems like they think we should be on our hands and feet bowing to them. I remember Troy Glaus was so arrogant when he came up, and Justin Upton/Chris Young were the same way on Friday. Tulo seems like a good kid though, I like that.

-He didn't play tonight, but Yorvit seems absolutely lost at the plate so far. Ianetta was stroking it tonight, despite the fact that it resulted in no hits. He was still hitting it hard.

Everybody seems lost at the plate.

-I understand why Jayson Nix is starting at 2nd base. I just hope they'll give Barmes an honest chance to compete for some playing time. Tonight, one at bat, one long triple.

Honestly, I don't like Barmes that much, and don't think he's an upgrade over Nix over the entire season. I like how Nix can work the count though.

-The error on Kip Wells tonight. Embarrassing. A little league play. It cost a meaningless run, but that's not the point. You can't make plays like that and have people take you seriously.

That was one of the most embarrassing plays I have ever witnessed. It was like an error you would see in a little league game. An easy throw, and completely misfires by like 20 feet.

One thing the Rockies really need to start doing though, is getting hits with runners in scoring position. I think they must be like 5-50 or something like that so far, absolutely dreadful.
Plus, twice on Sunday that I can remember, they had runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out, only to end up grounding into a double play, and then an out to end the inning.

If that Rox coaching staff can make Josh Fogg...unquestionably one of the very worst MLB pitchers I ever saw while he was with the Bucs...into a servicable starter, then they should be able to turn Wells into something. Wells wasn't much better in the Burgh than Fogg was, but he seemed to be more talented based upon what I saw over the years.

Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't want either of them back, just sayin' They turned crap around before so there's no reason why they couldn't do it again with Wells.

I followed what was going on a bit in Pittsburgh this off-season as both Bay, and Nady were rumored to be possibly heading back to the Madres. I don't think they were interested in Bay as much as they were in Nady. Personally I was glad they didn't make any deals though...X is better off in the Pirate's park, and I thought Scott Hairston really earned a shot at a starting job last year (not to mention PetCo doesn't seem to bother him). In any case I'm glad that Xavier is getting a shot.

Greg Maddux gets win #348 tonight.

An incredible pitcher, who really right now is a shell of what he used to be, but still a good pitcher in baseball.
These last few years have caused his career ERA to jump over 3, but still, I love how great he is. Amazing command and smarts to get hitters out. I mean, 17 straight years of 15+ wins? Simply amazing. Going 19-2 with a 1.63 ERA in 1995.
Probably will reach 360 career wins if he stays healthy this year I imagine.
I really think the 300 win club is going to get VERY exclusive in the future.
I mean, take Jake Peavy, one of the best pitchers in the game who is "only" 26. Currently, he has 78 career wins. Say he averages 18 wins over the next 10 years, 180 wins(including this year), that puts him at 258 at the age of 36. Average 15 for 4 more, 60 more wins, and thats 318 wins. Now, that would be incredible to average 18 wins a year for 10 years, and 15 a year after he turns 36.
Another guy, Johan Santana who is 29, has 94 career wins. Say he averages 18 a year for 10 more years, that still puts him 25 wins short.

I've been watching the Indians and the Angels, and the 9th inning went absolutely wild after a pretty mild game. The Wa-Hoos charged ahead of the Angels 4-2 thanks to a comedy of errors on the Angel's part, but then at the bottom of the 9th, the Angels managed to load up the bases for Torii Hunter... And then the classiest man in all sports went yard for a grand slam walkoff. 6-2, Angels.

Hell of a finish!

Went to the game! We have not lost a game after leading in the 8th in 162 games now. Even when we are down and out, someone comes through. Indians have a 45 game saves dude but a 5.06 ERA from 2007. He showed his era tonight. Wow! What a 9th inning finish. Last time I ve seen a ball hit that deep on a full pulled ball, was Tim Salmon in the world series. To get around that fast and that much wood takes a lot. Best for this year is the fact that Detroit is stinking up the joint with all that offense. Angels need to go 2 games above .500 since two starters are out. TJ, with Putz hurt, you guys are showing vulnerability in your late inning relievers. Maybe K ROD will be out for a few days with hurt ankles and Shields screwing things up in the bullpen will even things out. Nerd fantasy BB players: GET JOE SAUNDERS ASAP! 2 games going into the 8th with giving up 1 run in each. No offensive help though. He might be the Kelvin Escobar from 2006.

What is the scoop on Matt Kemp? Is he vastly overrated or does Joe T have a personal issue with him? If he can't get full time AB's over Juan Pee Pee and Andre Ethier then something is a miss.

Nope, just a rough patch and some things he needs to work on...

PHOENIX -- Asked about his struggles at the plate and how he wasn't in the Dodgers' lineup for the third day in a row on Monday, Matt Kemp shrugged his shoulders, smiled and said everything would be fine.

"I'm just a little impatient, man," Kemp said. "It's not that big a deal. If I keep having fun, the game will come to me."

But hitting coach Mike Easler says he knows this has been a tough period for Kemp, who entered the Dodgers' series opener in Arizona with a .125 average and seven strikeouts in 16 at-bats. The opening-day right fielder, Kemp last started on Friday because Manager Joe Torre has wanted to shield him from tough right-handers such as Arizona's Monday starter, Dan Haren. Andre Ethier has moved from left field to right and Juan Pierre has gone from the bench to Ethier's regular spot.

Kemp will be in the lineup today against left-hander Doug Davis.

"It's a very tough situation for him to be in," said Easler, who worked with Kemp in the minors in the two previous seasons. "But in a situation like this, he has to work harder."

Which Kemp has done, Easler said, pointing to how he is at the ballpark by 2 p.m. every day to get extra work in the batting cages.

Kemp was at Chase Field at 1:30 p.m. Monday, more than five hours before the first pitch. Easler said that Kemp's recent problems are a result of him looking too much for pitches on the outside part of the plate. Kemp spent the spring working on hitting the ball to the opposite field, which, Easler said, has led to his chasing balls off the plate.

"Half of the breaking balls down and outside are balls," Easler said. "You get to a point where you're pushing everything instead of driving it."

Easler said he was urging Kemp to look for pitches in the "middle-inner third" and to drive the ball to center. Kemp waited for a pitch in that location when pinch-hitting Monday in the seventh inning, slapping a single to right. Sensitive to what Kemp might be feeling, Torre said he had met in his office with the 23-year-old for the last two days and told him he would play today.

"I told Matty that he'd be playing a lot of baseball before it was all over, and that's the part he has to trust me with," Torre said, adding that he didn't want Kemp to face Haren because "an anxious hitter will play into this guy's hands."

Kemp said that while he respected Torre's decision, he wanted to play regardless of who was on the mound.

"I'm a big leaguer, they're a big leaguer," he said. "I'll face anybody, it doesn't matter who it is -- ace, no ace, I want to face them all."

Easler, who says he knows Kemp "like the back of my hand," declared that this rough patch would benefit him in the long run.

"He's going to be a superstar," Easler said. "He's destined for greatness. But every hitter, these kids here, the Uptons, the Youngs, the Howards, they've gone through what Matt's going through."

Yeah I really hate facing Peavy, but he is on my fantasy team.Ha!

I'd hope it is a replay of the last series we were in this season. Though I don't know if you have noticed, but seems like the team at home has trouble winning games between these two teams.

Yeah...but I don't think there is really anything to it though...it's just one of those things.

So far when Penny, and Peavy have matched up the Madres have gotten the better of the Dahyers, buy a pretty large margin (in terms of wins/losses). I wonder if the Madres will be able to keep that up, and in doing so bust out of their offense-less streak. They've scored a total of two runs over 20 plus innings. This hot/cold run producing has been what's killed them the past few years. One night they'll knock a guy like Penny all over the yard, and the next get no hit through seven by guys like Doug Davis, or Jason Jennings.

Round one goes to the Madres. Neither Peavy, or Penny pitched very well.

Hoffman gets the save, but not after making it interesting...walking two, and giving up a run plus two hits. Although one of the hits was complete BS as Andre Ethier was clearly out at first on a nubber to second, but the first base umpire anticipated the call instead of making the proper one.

Young and Lowe meet again tomorrow.

Yup. Rare the Dodgers even get a shot to win a game vs Peavy. Let this one get away from us. Relief pitching isn't stepping up and Andruw Jones is a big funk.

I was at some fights last night, so I was lucky enough to miss that debacle. In any case the Madres take the rubber match. Maddux went five innings and got the win. (The Mad Dog only threw 67 pitches, so I assume that the sweltering heat was a factor. [95 degrees]) Hoffman got the save in the 1-0 game. With the Rockies trouncing the Snakes today...the Madres limp to within 2.5 games of first. They get Arizona next weekend.

Yeah it gets wicked hot at Chavez Urinal...I guess. A few years ago I went to a game there. Sat in the right field Pavilion. Adam Eaton took a no hitter into the seventh. Khalil Greene made an unbelievable catch rolling on the tarp in foul territory. Hoffman slammed the door on the Dahyers. It was in the 90's just like today.

But what really stuck out besides the unbearable heat (they actually had cool zones set up under the bleachers which was nice)...was the razzing Brian Giles took. I'm immature, and like to call people names, but they came up with terms for a homosexual that I never could have imagined. So I learned some stuff that day. Of course Gilly homered in the game.

Good win for the Rockies, they needed a win, no matter what happened and they killed the DBacks pitching today. Awesome.
btw, about the Dodgers:
No biggie, considering the Dodgers were almost willing to drop 30-35 mill on A-Rod. Plus it isn't a 100 million dollar contract over 6-7 years. the Dodgers draw about 50,000 fans a night and Dodgers owner Uncle Frank makes a killing off it.
I think he will do well in Dodger blue and hopefully we get rid of that worthless outfielder Pierre. Jones had a shoulder problem that hampered his power ability last year, any ballplayer with shoulder pain is going to have a less than spectacular season.
Imagine an outfield with Ethier, Jones and Kemp...SICK! Thats a very solid defense, plus Jones is an ideal middle of the order bat that the Dodgers desperately need.
Couple notes from YAHOO!
Kones is a winner of 10 consecutive Gold Glove awards who has 101 career assists and led National League outfielders in putouts last year with 396. Scouts said his range appeared to decline in 2005 and 2006, but he rebounded so well that sabermatrician and fielding expert John Dewan said in the 2008 Bill James Handbook, "perhaps we should crown (Jones) 'Comeback Fielder of the Year.' "

The Dodgers scouted Jones extensively and had new batting coach Don Mattingly watch video of the power hitter before making him an offer. Mattingly and others in the organization believe Jones' problems last season are correctable.

I'm going to remember this post all year long and remember how someone though Andruw Jones would be the answer to the Dodgers power woes. Isn't he already getting booed?

Andruw never gets off to fast starts and typically starts out slow. It is frustrating to see him strike out so many times as a Dodger fan. However I do like his defense very much. It's a world's difference from when Pierre was in center. Can't wait to get rid of Pierre...

I don't see how Hurdle can justify keeping Nix in and Barmes out of the lineup. When Barmes has started this year, the bats throughout the lineup have awakened.

And while we're on that, replace Yorvit Torrealba and Chris Ianetta with Nix and Barmes in the previous sentence. I am glad they signed Torrealba. You just couldn't (and still can't) rely on Ianetta being the guy. But I think something happened to Ianetta this offseason. He came to spring training with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. So far, he's carried it over to the regular season. Until he cools off, I think you put him out there at least four or five nights a week.

Definitely agree with both points. Yorvit has played pretty horrible on both offense and defense, Ianetta has surpassed him by far this year. I think he was disapointed in how things worked out last year and wanted to show the Rockies staff that he is the catcher of the future.

Nix, I never really liked because I just had a feeling, he wouldn't hit for a lick. Love the defense, but you gotta be able to hit to start. My favorite for the job was actually Jeff Baker. Barmes though, has to start getting consistent AB's.

The biggest reason though for the Rockies struggles this year IMO? Troy Tulowitzki. He has just gotten into a huge hole and its been dreadful. You just can't have your #2 hitter hit that low, as well as not moving runners up or getting a key knock to drive a run in. To me, it seems like he's trying to pull nearly everything, which is resulting in weak pop ups and grounders to short.

Don't tell me those 3 balls at the knees weren't strikes.
The ump became an idiot though in the 14th. Shortened his strike zone big time, first with Hawpe, then that carried into the bottom of the inning.

But seriously, freakin A, score and get this over with so I can go to sleep!

No the ball WAS OUTSIDE THE PLATE. It was outside and should have been a ball 4, clearly as the replay showed.

Yeah you are not going to sleep tonight my friend. On to the bottom of the 16th.

Oh, on Morton, yeah, when it was 3-1 and got called strike 2, that was a ball.
But the 3 balls Corpas threw to him previous were all strikes IMO that you gotta call at that point in the game.

But damn, I remember back in the top of the 9th, when Helton and Holliday both hit balls that were caught at the wall.
Man, Rockies are going to be freakin exhausted in Houston. Thats going to suck ass for them.

What would prove to be downright horrible is if Torrealba gets hurt. My god, I still have nightmares from when Neifi Perez played catcher.
Rockies bench is used up now btw
Padres I think just have their backup catcher now

I don't know about those 3 balls previous are strikes. Dude is 6-6 and its hard to pitch to tall guys, its questionable but certainly the ump shrunk the strike zone.

Yeah I have to believe they have a plane chartered and is on standby. Soon as this game is over, they are going to haul ass to the airport and fly to Houston ASAP and probably sleep all day to get rest.

Apparentally(i must've missed this earlier) the Pads play by play man said he'd have to eat a hat if it went past 18 innings, so the color guy served him a hat on a paper plate and he started trying to cut it with a knife and fork.

Oh man, I know, but at this point, its hilarious because they are lacking focus.
For instance, one guy was like "OMG the dude that looks like Pete Carroll is still behind the plate!"
