View Full Version : Shanahan building "megamansion"

I feel almost dirty posting a link to a Penny Parker story. But I thought this was interesting, in light of the supposed "cost cutting" firings yesterday.

Don't kill the messenger here. I think he has every right to do whatever he wants with his money. And I don't think there's any proof that the firings were cost cutting in nature. I'm just posting this to fan the flames, er, try to be informative. :)

PARKER: Shanny dream house

Need further proof that Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan is staying put and sitting pretty? He and wife Peggy have sold their Cherry Hills home for $16 million -- a record high price in the metro area -- and recently broke ground on a megamansion that will take a year to complete.

Shanahan declined to discuss details, but, through Broncos spokesman Jim Saccomano, confirmed that the house is under construction.

So here's what I've gleaned from sources, some of whom asked to remain anonymous:

Their existing home sold on Jan. 19, 2007, in a private transaction to a friend who used the name 20 Cherry Hills LLC. Its appraised value by the Arapahoe County Assessor's office is value was $6.5 million.

It includes three Jacuzzis, an 80-square-foot steam room, a 108-square-foot sauna, a 2,299-square-foot heated garage, a 2,100-square-foot swimming pool, a 165-square-foot hot tub. It was built in 2000 and has slate mission tile on the roof.

Two buildings are on the land, one with three bedrooms and six fireplaces; the other with two bedrooms.

The first building has 7,733 square feet, a 7,272-square-foot open porch, a 2,857-square-foot terrace and a 2,353-square-foot wood balcony. The second home has 1,089 square feet.

Some deets on the new abode:

The new place is a football throw from the old house but on a bigger lot with more privacy.

Rumor is that the new home will be 30,000 square feet. "Every time you hear the rumor, the house gets bigger," said one spy.

The land formerly was owned by Janet Elway, who, I'm told, got it as part of her divorce settlement from Hall of Famer John Elway.

Peggy is an interior decorator who is designing the new digs with a friend.

"Peggy loves doing big projects like this," another spy said. "I think she needs a new project."

Honestly...Shanahan should be spending 18 hours a day at the office considering the way his team has performed over the last two seasons.

Why does he need such luxury? Is he getting a little too content in Denver?

The Broncos might be better if Shanny spent a little more time watching film and a little less time in his sauna.

Sounds like this is more of a project for his wife than anything. I've heard from numerous sources, including a buddy who interned with the Broncos in 06, that Shanahan spends crazy hours at Dove Valley so I imagine he isn't craving the new house to chill out and waste time.

As far as the money, sounds like the Shanahan's have made some good investments. He makes a great salary, but it's not like he's the highest paid coach in the league. More likely he's a guy who's saved his money, made smart investments, knows he's not going anywhere and wants to take advantage of the market.

Why does everybody keep saying this? Not just you, Dom, but numerous posters keep making this mistake ...

The firings DEFINITELY WERE COST CUTTING MEASURES! Team COO Joe Ellis said this very clearly in an interview, that they were "not performance related, but were the result of the realities of business efficiencies."

Joe Ellis, the Broncos' chief operating officer said, "our industry is like many others, where downsizing and layoffs are required to make the business more effective."

Joe Ellis notified employees of the cutbacks with the message, "It is important to note these decisions come at the expense of personal pain to individuals whose jobs were eliminated for reasons of business efficiency — not on the basis of performance."

Given the number of hours Shanahan reportedly spends working during the football season, he'll barely even see the nice new house. Since his wife is an interior decorator, it's pretty easy to surmise that the new house is more for her than for him... keeps her happy and gives her a new decorating project to keep her busy, too. Win/win.

Depends on your definition of junk food I guess. I don't eat fast food hardly at all and haven't for years. Occasionally (maybe once every two weeks) I'll grab a quesadilla or something from Taco Bell ore one of the dollar menu burgers from Wendy's.

I've always been a pretty healthy eater, but I drink 2-3 sodas everyday and never exercised. I mean at all. I'm definitely changing that.

Guess I'll look into black coffee for my caffeine fix. :(

The only bad news is I'll have to buy a new Priest Holmes jersey in a few months.

If their budget can accommodate the expense of a new house, why shouldn't they have it? And according to the article in the OP (assuming it's correct), they just sold the old house for $10 million more than its assessed value....

Bizarre. I understand how that can be the case in certain markets, but not nowadays with home values plummeting. In Massachusetts, they reassess homes every few years and currently most homes' market values are actually less than their assessed values.

"One thing few fans know about Mike Shanahan is that he's almost maniacally driven by superstitions. For St. Patrick's Day in 1986, at his wife's (Peggy) request, he put a six foot inflatable leprechaun on top of the family's Parker, Colorado home. The afternoon he put it up, Shanahan shot his first-ever hole-in-one at Englewood, Colorado's Cherry Hills Country Club. Shanahan never took the leprechaun down. When the original fell into disrepair, he replaced it with a new one. He claims he's lost track of how many leprechauns he's purchased over the past twenty years."

It's interesting you said that. I was pumping iron this afternoon while leering wantonly at high school girls.

What you get tired of high school boys?

He must have more domestic staffs than coaches. And I wonder if they have titles like ' Assistant Head Gardener in Charge of Landscape Operations ' :D

Honestly...Shanahan should be spending 18 hours a day at the office considering the way his team has performed over the last two seasons.

Why does he need such luxury? Is he getting a little too content in Denver?

The Broncos might be better if Shanny spent a little more time watching film and a little less time in his sauna.
all of which is speculation but it is interesting if he is spending his time like that. most coaches when in this league eat breathe and sleep football 24/7/365 especially if they have had a couple bad seasons

The guy works hard for his money and I'm happy to see him enjoy it. America seems almost pissed at people who make it in life and live a good lifestyle. More capitalism less socialism. Congrats Shanny you deserve it.

Clearly the actions of a coach who knows that he's on the hotseat this season.

Or a coach who couldn't give a **** either way. He's set for life and would be hired within a week if he was fired in Denver.

happens all the time here in NY, assessed value is usually applied to a ratio determined by township to determine property taxes. Often the assessed value is a fraction of the true market value, it's too costly to reassess every time the market fluctuates 10 million is too much to disregard as some kind of property tax. That's a 150% tax hike? Who pays 10 million dollars more than the asessed value of the house? Who's smart enough to get that rich yet not smart enough to know what kind of deal he's getting on a house he's buying?

I'm sure that it's already been said in this thread... But in case it hasn't: this is a pretty sure sign that Shanahan will be with the team for years to come. You would think he'd have a long conversation with Pat about his job security before putting roots into the ground *this* deep.

Actually, I'd disagree with Taco here. I don't think an iota of meaning can be read into Shanny's real estate transactions, either as a portend of his job security, or lack thereof. It's just a personal real estate deal -- nothing more, nothing less.

So if hes is on the way out his plan was to build a brand new mansion in colorado so he would have to commute or buy another house/mansion to wherever to coach another team?

You're nuts. Shanahan isn't going to buy a huge mansion if he's a year or two away from losing his job. Further, Bowlen wouldn't be carrying so much of Shanahan's water with the media if he had any plans on releasing him. You should just go ahead and face it: Shanahan is here for the long haul.

I would he would be burned out....

Hell, if he made $10 mil on the last house, why not build another? As for assessed values for prop tax that was probably based on the comps for his zip, s/f. If the comps were at $6 mil, then that is what the prop tax assessment is based on. I bet his neighbors aren't too pleased that the new comps will have to take into consideration the $16 mil sale price.

The Shanahans bought the 3.5-acre lot where they are building the home from Janet Elway for $4 million .... ??? she in real estate ???
Apparently it was part of the divorce settlement with John Elway.

From Wikipidia:

That's crazy. I wonder if he dresses it up as Santa on Christmas.

I can't believe no one called BS on this. ???
