BRONCOS MOVES PERFORMANCE-BASED?
Posted by Mike Florio on March 20, 2008, 10:38 a.m.
Here’s an interesting theory regarding the recent decision of the Denver Broncos to dump media relations director Paul Kirk and Andrew Mason, the managing editor of the team’s web site.
As a reader has pointed out, might Kirk and Mason have been targeted not because of budget cuts, but because they were deemed to have not done enough to respond to mounting criticism from beyond the organization of coach Mike Shanahan?
For both Kirk’s and Mason’s positions, there’s a line item in the budget. The team will have employees in these jobs for 2008. So could it be that Kirk was selected for termination simply because he wasn’t sufficiently aggressive and effective in controlling the spin as it relates to the team’s head coach?
It’s also possible that Kirk and/or Mason expressed direct or indirect resistance to the party line regarding the termination of G.M. Ted Sundquist. Some (manyMe and My parents) outside observers regard the move as an effort by Shanahan to identify a scapegoat for the team’s struggles. But the team claims that the move was the result of a personality conflict between Sundquist and Shanahan, which for some reason had allowed the men to coexist for more than a decade in the same organization — and which didn’t prevent Sundquist from being elevated to G.M. in 2001.
Stay tuned on this one. We have a feeling that there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Seriously, when I first discovered pft i thought it was the greatest thing ever, but holy crap, they've got a hard on for hating the broncos, it's falling out of favour with me fast.

I really believe Shanahan couldn't give two ****s about spinning anything. He has always accepted the responsibility of the teams shortcomings.

I agree. Shanny doesn't care about image and he certainly doesn't care about finding scapegoats. If he wanted a scapegoat he would have fired sundquist after the season just finished. Firing him now does nothing except for the fact that Shanny wanted him gone. Finding scapegoats is unecessary because he knows the buck stops with him so he is going to do what he feels is best for the success of the team.

So true. As Khan and I both know, there are four or five media relations people in the organization ... now there will be three or four. Somebody will be promoted to Kirk's title, but that person probably won't be replaced then. When I worked there, ther was just Saccomano and one assistant ... so I think they'll get by with one fewer salary. It's not like media outlets might decide not to cover the team because there's "too few" PR people.
And Andrew Mason's job - as a Broncos in-house TV reporter - probably won't be replaced. I'm pretty sure they decided the website was not a sufficient source of revenue to pay one guy to spend all his time assembling in-depth free content for visitors there.

I think Bowlen wanted Ted fired, not Shanahan. There were some issues there, and Bowlen kept Shanahan. (See interview where he siad "I am the Check". )
Shanahan gets blamed for a lot of stuff around here, and does not get much credit for the positive things he does. No wonder he doesn't give a rat's patoozie what anyone here thinks - or anyone else, for that matter - excpet Bowlen......

Agreed. It has "local student intern" written all over it.
The Broncos should really rethink their entire web strategy.
They should consider engaging an established site like, oh say..the Mane....and creating a loose working relationship with them.
The Broncos would give them the kind of team access that Andrew had while also paying for the infrastructure\bandwidth of the fan site (here is your opportunity to get your avatar back BroncoBuff).
In return they get a group of enthusiastic fans that will provide the kind of coverage that it would have taken 10 Andrews to....all for free. No salaries or benefits or any other financial stipends.
There really is an opportunity here for a fan site to create a partnership with the team that would be mutually beneficial. The Broncos provide deeper insight to rabid fans that the newspapers don't service...all for a nominal cost.
The Mane or similar fansite gets to send a few of there best and most dedicated to the pressbox, behind the scenes, on the field.
Sounds like a win, win to me. Somebody just needs to approach the Broncos and sell the vision.
Any takers?

One thing about the website, While great for free info and broncos news. It was absolute crap for bronco stuff. And lets face it, that was more important. Great info and news is great for making your site valuable but like anything else it needs to make money. The site is not converting fans only feeding the already converted-and then not making it easier for them to pick up merchandise.

It already be done, by Danny Boy at the Skins. I would this site if that happen.

Danny Boy did it as a way to control the critical Media.
I would hope that any similar relationship would allow the 'webporter' to report what they wanted with no strings.
A little vision in Media Relations is all they need.

It the NFL, I don't see that happening. I am surprised they haven't threaten law suites against owners that have sites that talk about NFL teams.
