We went the HTC route when we got Alltel phones in my house. Seem decent so far and I get to stick with Windows. I like what I know and what I know is that I like Windows

That would make you the only person on earth who actually likes windows mobile:) That entire OS is just a complete catastrophe (it is wholly removed from the desktop OS that is Windows).

Yeah, I've yet to actually find anything that makes windows mobile anything better than Internet Mobile.

I'm sure there are some programs that work with it ???

At very least, the phone looks better than blackberries (I think) and it was free.

MobiTV basically allows you to watch live TV. It's better though if you get a sling box and use it on your treo than MobiTV.

I have a few applications on my treo, have madden 06 and some card games. Mostly though I like that I can be able to view the web and my emails whenever and wherever.

Yeah you can but I don't. I get enough text messages to keep me busy enough.

Oskie, you'd need my PIN, which is unique to your SIM card (att) or blackberry device itself (verizon). First you'll need to download blackberry messenger. Search google on how to do that. Then, to add buddies, you need your PIN.

Go to Settings.
Go to Options.
Scroll to "Status" and click.
Second to last item is "PIN" - write it down or copy-paste it. This is your PIN.

To add someone else to your BBM buddy list, get their PIN and add it to their address book entry in your blackberry. From there, you'll be able to "Friend request" people in your address book who have valid PINs entered in your address book.

FYI, blackberry messenger works a lot more like AOL instant messenger than texting. Even though blackberrys lay out the history of texts between you and another party, BBM allows you to see when someone is typing, if your message has been delivered, and when it was read by the other party. It's a more efficient way to chat via text rapidly. I like it a lot and use it heavily.

I don't think the messages count toward your text total, but rather fall under the umbrella of data services. I'm assuming you've got the unlimited plan (anything else will get you killed with fees), so this eliminates your need for text messaging, or at least reduces it. Many of my contacts who use text communication most heavily are blackberry owners, so this is a nice feature.

I have all of that... at work we use the messenger to play buzz word bingo during meetings. I didn't know how to invite people out of our network. Usually I do it through a email.

penguintheory

All you need is the PIN - usually you text your PIN to someone else, or write it down and call them up, and they enter it into your entry in their address book, and add you as a BBM friend.

I'm not familiar with the restrictions that corporate-issue blackberrys have built-in - I do know that in the securities industry, many blackberrys are crippled for compliance reasons.

I don't even own a cell phone...

I'm resisting. And I own a business. Leave me alone.

Now that I think of it, I avoid phones completely when I'm not at work. I don't answer my home phone either. I let my kids do it. And no, I'm not antisocial.

I've had a Treo, then two Blackberries. I liked them both for different reasons, but neither can hold a candle to the iPhone, and I mean... they're literally not half as useful, practical, fun to use... imo. I also agree with the overall sentiment that Windows Mobile is an utter disaster. Even most Windows-folk don't seem to be able to stomach it.

My reviews...

Treo 650

Cool phone. Sturdy, not too buggy. Decent apps and fairly compatible with Mac and PC. Nice sync software for its time, though it's a bit outdated now.. and they haven't really updated it. It was a great phone for its time, but I think it's getting left behind in a hurry. It feels pretty archaic.

Blackberry Curve/Curve 8320

The 2nd best phones out there, imo. Decent enough apps. They're really trying to make it more than an email device. The GPS was surprisingly useable. Photos are O.K.. Sync is decent, though only sort of Mac compatible. Email integration is seamless, though no better than some other phones. It does everything pretty well, but no one thing particularly well.
Wi-fi calling on the 8320 is useful if you have a bad signal.

iPhone

There is no substitute. Is it perfect? Of course not. Is it close? Absolutely.
Totally seamless integration and sync with iTunes, calendar, address book on every charge. Tons of storage. (8 or 16 GB instead of the few you get by ADDING a card on a BB, etc.) Excellent camera. Beautiful display and the touch-screen is fun to use and extremely functional. I thought the virtual keyboard would be tough to get used to, but it's great. More cool features than I can list, but a particular favorite is the ability to publish on-line photo-albums on dot mac right from the phone. Take a pic, click "publish to on-line gallery" ... and push send. It shows up on your slick looking photo gallery on-line in about 3 seconds. You can make as many as you want.
Internet is excellent. A little slow on 2.5G, but 3G is coming. If you have any wi-fi near, it's very fast.

I was skeptical about getting it, even though I'm a Mac guy. The cost and switching to ATT irked me. But, it was absolutely 100% worth it and I'm only pissed that I fiddled around with other phones for the past few months.

My two cents.

Forgot to mention, someone said the email on the iPhone wasn't good? I was able to integrate 4 separate accounts (online and ISP) in about 3 minutes and can switch in and out of them and check mail literally faster than I can on my computer using DSL. It's absolutely seamless.

Now, if you're talking about enterprise email from an exchange server, that's coming on the next update in a few weeks.

You can certainly type a hell of a lot faster on the BlackBerry. I think that's what the previous poster was referring to.

Yup, I agree completely with your analysis other than the comment of it being outdated. I don't think it is outdated...yet.

Maybe in a year or so, I will trade it in for the Centro model.

I bought an iPhone last year when they dropped the price on them, so I picked up the 4gb model at $299.

It was a fine phone. Unfortunately I didn't use any of the big features that separate the phone from others, so all I was left with was an average phone with a frustrating lack of key features. Anyway, i know a lot of these issues will be addressed once real applications start coming out for it.

Sold the phone on Ebay and picked up the Blackberry Pearl 8130. LOVE IT. It has all the things the iPhone doesn't, and I even find that my typing on the phone is actually faster than what I could do on the iPhone. I am very very happy with the decision and it even has built in GPS which just saved me $300 buying a real GPS unit.

Unless Apple blows everyone away later in the year with its "second gen" iPhone, I may be a Crackberry user for life. My PIN, for anyone who cares, is 3189D055.

Here are some helpful links that may help other Crackberry users:

http://crackberry.com - Great site for news, reviews, message forums, and software. Very large community.

http://pinstack.com - Another good community site

http://blackberry8130.wordpress.com/ - A nice blog written by some guy who just got his Pearl. Lots of good troubleshooting and usage tips.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PIN me. ;)

It's not outdated compared to most phones... just when you compare it to an iPhone or even a Blackberry. Palm really should have been making wholesale upgrades to thier OS over the past three years. Instead, they sort of sat still and hence have lost a huge part of the market-share. Their stock has been murdered while RIMM and APPL soared largely based on handset sales.

I still like it because it's simple... and you're right, it'll still get through most handheld-style tasks. It's just too bad they didn't work a little harder to improve on it.

I lived in/around Denver for 8 years and REALLY miss Colorado. I returned to visit summer of 2006 and then last Christmas of 2007 after having been away since 1990. I hardly recognized Denver.

And...I'm the "some guy" referred to by CHAWKNZ. I invite all Bronco fans to visit my blog at http://blackberry8130.wordpress.com.
