http://blog.washingtonpost.com/sleuth/2008/03/obama_reacts_to_controversial.html

The Democratic presidential hopeful has compared his longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, to an "old uncle" with whom he doesn't always agree. But with the controversial preacher's racially inflammatory remarks and sermons burning up the Internet over the past 24 hours or so, the Obama campaign had to respond with some tough love.

So does this hurt Obama? Is this the kind of connection that matters? I say it's much ado about nothing; Another example of the press being reckless for ratings.

It certainly doesn't help to be apart of his church for 20 years. The man married him and his wife and baptized his children. I'd like to know what Obama does agree with him on.

Did you feel the same way when liberals went after any conservative who spoke at Bob Jones University? Do you feel the same way when Catholics went after McCain for being endorsed by Rev. John Hagee?

Personally, I don't put that much stock in a candidate's religion or who his minister is. If you are the president, you need to be president of all the people and show respect for all religions. I didn't care that Romney is a Mormon nor that JFK was a Catholic. It's their political positions and political beliefs that matter to me and how committed they are to those beliefs.

However, fair is fair. If the media is going to slam Republicans for who they associate with, Obama's minister ought to be fair game too. You can't have two sets of rules just because of skin color or party affiliation.

I'll need more from him, but this a step in the right direction to get my vote.

I'm sure the "machine" will come to life on this one. To all those who have said he's been getting a "pass" from the media....we'll see. I couldn't care less, not that the popular vote really matters, but he ain't getting mine.

The thing that gets me is that this is old news. People have known who Wright is and what he has said for some time.

Why does this story come out NOW and who benefits from it? Who seriously needs to knock Obama down a few pegs in order to keep their presidential hopes alive?

It should be pretty easy to figure out.

The black church in America has been the gathering place for political action and reaction for a long time. Much of this political rhetoric is pretty left wing and reactionary but I doubt to many people who have watched Obama's career would give a second's worth of credence to the thought that he's on board with the kind of divisiveness his minister has been quoted with saying...so yeah...much to do about nothing much. The media ought to lay off the religious angle for the vast majority of these candidates, regardless of whether they're on the left or the right. Unless somebody's carrying around some kind of Heaven's Gate baggage, there are more important issues to talk about IMO.

I may not know what you mean. In fact, I'm sure I don't. I meant "tosses" as in tosses overboard. What do you mean?

Intellectual weakling!!! Its all about ratings??? His "pastor" is a damn bigot. Obama listened to that son of a ***** for twenty years? THIS is another example of teh double standard that exsists in America -- if a white guy listen to some racist bigot for twenty years -- he would not have been a senitor let alone have a decent shot at becoming our next president.

WHY should we give Obama a pass? Anyone left of center with any core of intellectual consistantcy? Thats what i hate about the cult mentality -- if Craig does something wrong -- we give him a pass because he is an R, and condemn Spitzer -- or teh otehr way around. I can see if he heard him once and then had a spine and walked out or tried to reform from within -- but he sat there on his hands and siad nothing, and now that the issue is exposed he says I dont agree with what he said -- sorry, that doesnt do it for me -- if you were a man of charicter -- you would have fought it 20 damn years ago.

I take it you didn't like it when the reverend said, "Instead of saying God Bless America, black Americans should be saying, God Damn America?"

I could be mistaken living as out of the US scene as I do but I thought that meant pleasuring a women with one's mouth & tongue. This be one man to another so I don't know if the same slang applies.

QFT.

Unfortunately, you can rest assured the infotainment lapdogs in the corporate media will do their utmost to steer the debate away from the important issues and to pimp the usual wedge issues.

Would you have sat there and listened to that? Those that sit there are listen or cheer him on -- get filled with poision. That mus tbe where Michelle Obama has been getting her crap from -- the typical self-loathing, anti American garbage. Those that sit there and do nothing are blacks who happen to be weak -- those that listen and cheer are racist and need to renew their Black Panther memberships.

I am absolutely furious! We are not allowed to question Obama for sitting there and listening to this -- for twenty years -- this pastor was saying this stuff like last year right? And then Obama thinks -- he should sign him on your campain, and having him bapstise family members. IF a white guy spoke in those terms with the same words and replaced black with white he would have a pointy hood over his head -- and he would be thrown to the curb -- and rightfully so.

Make excuses for him if you want, but like I have siad a million times before --when your club member screws up -- call him out.

No, and I loved much the core of what his message has been -- being positive, and not shredding folks for holding different views --

Obama is going to loose some votes on this one. It may be too late to swing things back to Hilary, but Obama should have distanced himself from this guy a long time ago -- so to me it becomes an issue: 1. if you dont try to change someone, 2.or your church from within 3. or go walking long ago -- that makes me question if he buys it. Michelle Obama also reinforces this feeling, as she has let her inward feelings show about how she is so damn persecuted (with her ivy league education) that she just paid off her student loans, and how America is so mean, and evil --- really, your husband who happens to be black and a man who had a grandparent was a sheep herder from the Sudan who’s grandson is now running for the most poweful position in the world? I think she should read Obama's book.

Of what I've heard from Jeremiah Wright, I would have sat through everything except the "GD America" part. I would have stood and walked out immediately at that. The rest I probably would have listened to one time and then never returned.

As for Pat Robertson, he said 9-11 was God's judgement on America for allowing abortion and homosexuality to run rampant. That's not much different than what Wright said except Wright blames American foreign policy. Either way, they fail to single out the group that was truly responsible for the ghastly attack. Both men are wrong and I see no sense in trying to condemn one minister and justify the other.

I often wonder what "dirt" previous presidents had before the 24 hour news channels and the internet hit. It's amazing now how everything you have done in your life can and will be used against you in the public arena. Just shows that if you want to have a political career and especially if you want to run for president you have to steer clear of anything that anyone could deem "shady" or "offensive" or someone will run the story and blow it out of proportion.

That becuase you are dishonest when it come to club politics -- the two wrongs make a right position is exactly what is wrong with politics, and the cult members of the parties -- who excuse when the "end jsutifies the means" and condemn when the other party does it.

I usually like your takes Spider, but on this one you are wrong.

Not to mention how juvenile and ignorant it is to use violence to solve your problems. What Spider needs is better control over his anger. To threaten someone with physical harm because they have different views just seems unamerican to me.

All this does is show me that Obama is weak. Nothing this pastor has said diverges from the man whose holiday we celebrate every January.

And anyone whose read the 9/11 commission report knows that it's true that Al Queda says they attacked America because of our interventionism overseas - particularly in the middle east where we have built military bases on land that they consider holy.
